The key to keeping them outside is mass. I use a big plastic tote that is designed for keeping gardening tools it. I only put fresh food in one side and it heats up as it breaks down, keeping the whole thing warm but leaving a cooler side for the worms to escape the heat. Sometimes it gets a layer of frost on the very top but is still warm beneath. We don't get super cold winters here though, it gets down to -3 °C fairly often but not often lower

Didn't realise that the lid blew off my outdoor wormery until I spotted blackbirds and robins going in and out. I don't mind them taking some worms though, they breed prolifically in the big big bin which stays warm even in winter

Encountered a handsome toad on my evening walk by the lakeside which may not sound very exciting but despite the wetlands this site has a distinct lack of amphibians because of the polluted water and land so I was rather happy to meet this one

If you’re having a bonfire this evening don’t forget to check your wood pile for hedgehogs and other critters. Ideally completely move the pile and build the bonfire at last minute to minimise the risk of animals moving in to it and getting hurt.
Hedgehogs respond to fear by rolling in a ball and freezing so you can’t count on them escaping when the fire is lit

Had a meeting earlier today. Introduced myself and the woman I was meeting said in response “that’s really confusing”. To which I said “sorry what’s confusing?”. “That your name is Jim. It’s confusing.” I realised she’d misheard and corrected her that I’d said my name is Kim but I keep thinking about how rude and weird it is to tell somebody that their name is confusing. I saw this adorable grass vetchling yesterday (Lathyrus nissolia). Its beautiful tiny pale pink flower stood out against the browning late autumn grass of the hillside. I'm constantly blown away by the fact that when the people who lived in this house before me first moved in, their view from this window would have been of a colliery, a big dirty coking plant, and a coal railway. Now my view is woodland, scrub, and an abundance of life. Brownfields are incredibly valuable. I would go hardcore NIMBY to protect this land for all the wildlife that now calls it home.

Two homeowner neighbours have, over the last decade, encrouched upon the garden of the rented out property between so much that the tenants didn't realise they even had a garden until their out of town landlord came by because he wants to sell up. Now the tenant family in between have a garden which they love and the two homeowners & landlord are arguing over the boundaries
