In 1901, the Scots-born Andrew Carnegie was the richest man in the world. However, it's estimated he gave away 90% of his wealth, including providing funding for the construction of 2,059 libraries around the world between 1883 and 1929.

Maryhill Public Library in Glasgow. Built in 1903, it was one of the first wave of libraries built in the city using funds provided by Andrew Carnegie, and is one of seven designed by James R. Rhind.

While Carnegie libraries elsewhere in the UK were primarily brick-built, those in Scotland, like this one in Maryhill, were mostly built from stone.

An inverse bust by the Catalan artist Josep Maria Subirachs inserted into the wall of the 1842 former Stockwell Chapel of Ease on Howard Street, behind the St Enoch Centre in Glasgow.

The bust is designed in such a way as to fool the brain, and as a result as you walk past it, it suddenly changes from disappearing into the wall to standing out from it and before flipping back again.

Glasgow old and new: On the left is an abandoned and decaying 1901 Glasgow Style commercial building designed by John Archibald Campbell for the carting contractors Robert Buchanan and Company at 73 Robertson Street. On the right is a rather non-descript modern equivalent. For me, one of the main differences between the two is that the one of the left screams Glasgow the moment you see it, while the one on the right could be anywhere.

Last night I was in the former Renfield St Stephen's Church on Bath Street for the first time giving a talk to the Old Glasgow Club (and thanks to them for inviting me to speak). This mid-19th Century Early English Gothic church, which is now part of the Renfield Centre, is as impressive inside as out, and features this rather beautiful modern stained glass window.

Love this 'invisible' wall on the Burrell Collection in Pollok Park on the Southside of Glasgow. Designed in the 1970s and opened in 1983, the glass reflects the surrounding trees, while allowing as much light as possible into the building itself.

This is not a good scene to wake up to, but at least no one in the building or any firefighters were hurt. The neighbouring Central Station, a key element of Victorian Glasgow and an important hub for modern communters, is closed, but is hopefully unharmed.

The Art Deco brilliance of the former Beresford Hotel on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow. Built in 1937, it was designed by William Beresford Inglis, who later went on to manage and own it. The Beresford has an unexpected place in American 20th Century politics as it was here in 1939 that a 22 year old John F. Kennedy (who would go on to become president) gave his first official public speech.

Today I visited Glasgow's only known pair of architectural walruses as they're amongst my favourite sculptures in the city. They're on the 1899 Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation building (also known as Ocean Chambers) on West Regent Street in the city centre.

To be fair, if you read the original book, it never says that Triffids came from Outer Space. That was just the 1960s movie (I think). Instead, the book postulates they originated in a Soviet research laboratory. 🙂
