$400M to build a new building complete with underground bunker kitted out with hospital and using bullet proof glass is not outrageous in terms of what construction costs.

That bunker part with all the bells and whistles is going to inflate the cost.

That said, it is an outrageous thing to do to begin with while more than zero people are homeless, children have food insecurity, and national infrastructure is crumbling.

There is a goddamned sink hole in front of my house in the middle of the street. Originally reported as a pothole, the city reclassified it as a storm sewer/barrier repair.

So, there is a hole in the road that the road is crumbling into. This is due to storm drain issues.

The city has a truck out here working on the sewer, and they didn't close the road?!?!?

I've heard that the reason rape does not result in the death penalty (in the US) is to prevent rapists from killing their victims.

However, I don't know that this line of thinking is based on anything but vibes.

When death is the penalty for crimes large and small, the government can easily get rid of dissenters. And regular people can use the heavy hand of the criminal justice system to punish their neighbors for real or perceived slights.

Crime often stems from a lack of something, and when it comes to the option of certain death by starvation vs possible death for stealing, the death penalty is not a deterrent.

So, the underlining conditions of such a society will be the determining factor.

Uniforms are powerful tools. They allow the subjugation of the self into to a group, such that the individual's actions become the group's actions and the group's actions become a reflection of the individual.

We see the first effect all the time. A school child who wears a school uniform can get disciplined for behavior outside of school because the uniform makes the child into a representative of the school. The problem isn't that 'Johnny' stole an apple, the problem is that a child from this school stole an apple. This goes both ways for good and bad behavior. The institution gets the credit.

Subjugating the individual to the group also allows people to act in ways they wouldn't normally because while wearing the uniform, a person is no longer just 'Michael', but whatever the uniform represents. In some cases, this could mean a work uniform which allows you access to restricted areas, such as a school or a hospital. The uniform can create cohesion as everyone wearing it will be subjected to the same assumptions, expected to behave a certain way, and be recognized as part of that group. The anonymity granted by the uniform is a shield to hide behind. Some groups are very aware of this and hold their members to high standards, and some don't.

However, the very mechanism by which the individual's sense of self is less important than the uniform also means that the individual takes on the public character of that uniform regardless of whether or not that individual participates in the actions that others wearing the uniform participate in.

So, when a person tells a cop that he's a murderer, the individual wearing the cop uniform might react with, "I didn't shoot anyone". Maybe that's correct. Maybe that individual wearing the cop uniform has never fired his service weapon. But, someone wearing the same uniform he's wearing has. When an individual dons the uniform of a violent group, they take on the actions of that group.

Cops, and especially ICE, want to have their cake and eat it too. They want the anonymity and power of the uniform without taking on the group's stigma of violence.

I highly doubt that they are planning to divide that 130M equally across the entire military. I suspect that certain people in the military will be paid while the majority get nothing. That is what I was trying to illustrate: there will be some paid and some who aren't and knowing this administration, they'll prioritize higher ranking officers over anyone else. This is worse than not paying everyone if you want a cohesive military. It creates division, especially as the people most likely to not get paid are the ones living paycheck to paycheck with debt.

These situations even under the current system are not governed by laws. They are organized through voluntary association. Interpersonal disagreements are sorted out through conflict resolution.

There are some versions of anarchism wherein voting isn't a simple majority. It's a process where, in order for the vote to pass, it has to have 100% agreement. So when someone says, "nah, I don't want mandatory ties", the person organizing the vote goes to this person and actually talks to them about why, and if there are conditions that would tempt him to vote yes. If there aren't, then the vote doesn't pass, and everyone who wants to wear ties, wears the ties and those who don't don't. Maybe that person doesn't want to wear a tie because a tie gets caught in his work tools. Maybe he hates the feeling of something so close to his throat. Maybe he just doesn't have any. Maybe he just hates what they represent. Maybe he thinks they look ugly.

Now, if this was a safety matter instead of dress code, the person who won't comply with the safety procedures maybe gets asked to leave and find some other work to do (remember, his housing and food and healthcare are not tied to this work). Or no one will work with him while he's not following the safety procedures.

So, there are a couple of ways this would be addressed in an anarchist system, and there are solutions that we haven't even come up with yet.

1.) if we lived in an anarchist society, you might post about your experiences online, and, because our livelihoods are not dependent on working a job (as opposed to working for the benefit and continuity of the community), we could literally just travel to you, help you pack and move to whenever you wanted to go. Anarchism means the freedom to walk away without life-threatening consequences. (This option makes most sense to me, but I am only one brain)

2.) if you didn't want to move, we could still come to you and mediate between you and the neighbors (figure out what crawled up their butt to cause them to be so vicious to you), and try to work out something with them to help them stop. Find people in your community who are kind but afraid and embolden them to stand up to these tormentors.

Again, I am only one brain, we would have more solutions with more brains working on the problem.

Yes, the violence of our current system creates violence in people. Some of it is misdirected anger at the state of their lives, some of it is because violence is all they have been taught. Trauma changes people and sometimes for worse. Trauma can be healed, but that is extremely hard to do in our current system.

When I say that people being bellicose by nature is a fiction made up by elites, I mean that they have a vested interest in manifesting this belief in those they oppress and maintaining those conditions that reward violence.

In an anarchist system, beating up the pizza delivery person would still have consequences, and probably much more effective consequences than there are now. They could be blacklisted for all delivery services in the community, they could have the rest of the pizza workers show up and beat them up, or some other solution that works for that community. There would be no corporate pressure to just move on or retain a customer. And no corporate pressure from other delivery companies to deliver to this person anyway.

My mom grew up in Memphis during Jim Crow as white person with a divorced mom. There are so many stories, but I'll start with one I was present for:

My parents both worked at a University when we lived in Iowa. My dad in facilities, and my mom as a professor. One day, my mom invited her friend (another professor), who is Black, over to our house. Her friend pulls into our driveway, and as she gets out of the car, our old racist neighbor greets her with the business end of a shot gun. She gets back in her car. My mom hears yelling from outside, and comes outside to see her friend about to leave and the neighbor waving his shotgun. My mom, who grew up in Memphis, is one hard lady. Also important: my mom is 5'11 and the neighbor is maybe 5'7, she towers over him. She marches right up to the racist neighbor, and bellows, "what in God's name do you think you're doing?" (I'm sure people in the next town over could hear her). I think she might have even poked him in the chest. Racist neighbor starts to make his excuses, and she bellows over him, "that lady is my friend who I invited. YOU are the trespasser here. Don't you ever aim your gun at anyone on my property ever again". Racist neighbor was not prepared for this reaction, and is meekly trying to retreat. People are peaking out their windows now. My mom then demands that he apologize to her friend, and when my mom is in this state, the devil himself would obey. And that's how my mom made a racist apologize to a Black woman, and the neighbor never pulled that stunt again.

When my parents lived in Brazil, they had a fila. Filas are a mastiff breed, but were also bred for herding. Well, one day on a hike, their fila ran ahead, and came back with jangling and mooing noises. That dog had stolen a small herd of cows, and he was so proud of his gift to the family. While my mom was freaking out about how to get these cows back to whoever owned them, two boys came running up, out of breath, asking my parents to please let the dog return their cows. The dog was so sad to see the cows go.

This same dog also tried to herd church goers back into the church after service.

I enjoy reading knitting patterns and I do use them for some things. I also like knowing how to make a thing based on the theory of it - unchained from a set pattern. I like being able to do both.

One of my favorite vintage Victorian pattern pages was just sock heels - not the whole sock. A collection of different kinds of stock heels from around Europe. I took the "common heel" and made a pair of ankle socks just to try it out. Because the construction easily allowed it, I was able to put a "seam" (really just seed stitch for the center stitch of the heel flap). I now understand why people generally don't use that heel anymore.

This is how I found out that my preferred heel turn used to be called a "French heel".

Just because your dog is small and cute does not mean it's not reactive and in need of help about it.

It's not normal for a dog to bark and yip like it's having a panic attack every time you take it outside.

Your dog is stressed the fuck out, and you have a moral obligation to try to alleviate that. Just because a small reactive dog is less dangerous than a large reactive dog does not mean you get a pass on working with your dog through that anxiety.

my great grandfather was a doctor in the same town, and, according to my mom, whenever "Dr" Kellogg would come up in conversation, my great grandfather would say nothing but give a distainful side eye. Kellogg owned so much there and was so saturated in the medical field that he couldn't really say "this guy is a quack" publicly.
