Here's what mine used to snack on, if I remember correctly (he's 22 now, so it was a long time ago): mac and cheese, grilled cheese, ramen with an egg as extra filler. We also ensured more leftovers than usual that he could reheat for a cheaper alternative. He could basically eat a whole meal between meals and stay thin.

The two that help me most are PHPCompatibility and PHPStorm.

The first doesn't have cross-file awareness, making it hard when PHP 8 BC breaks are mostly about types, requiring that awareness. That's a limitation I came to accept, since it's built on top of a tool to check code styles.

The second isn't as robust when it comes to compatibility checks.

I was trying other tools to indirectly detect potential errors, but they are opinionated in ways that make them not suitable for me at all.

I'm definitely not the target audience of most static analysis tools out there. Except for a few that have limited scope, they all blow up in my face. There seems to be a giant gap for outlier legacy projects, which is 99% of the projects I deal with.
