Nostr Report turned one today! Exactly one year ago we started the Nostr Report with one goal in mind—To be the human algorithm that brings the best news and updates to the users of Nostr. We set out to capture the many changes and developments rapidly occurring on this new censorship-resistant protocol. The protocol was changing daily, with new features such as zaps, communities, and more being added and standardized in new NIPs. New apps, relays, and “other stuff” projects were also emerging at a rapid pace. We saw influential people like Ed Snowden joining, conferences and meetups being planned, and yet there were no algorithms to help capture and share all of this. That’s where we set out to make a difference.

Since then, we have produced a variety of content to make sure you don’t miss anything important. This includes over 350 daily reports which served to keep everyone up to date with the daily pulse on Nostr. We have appeared weekly on Plebchain Radio (npub14kw…j7y0) 📻 in more than 40 episodes to deliver a roundup of each week’s Nostr news. We’ve written articles and welcomed guest writers to publish blogs on various relevant topics. We started a weekly tech newsletter to take a deeper look into Nostr’s tech developments. Our on-the-ground reporter Marce (npub1y67…q62h) covered some incredible events, such as the first Nostr “Unconference” at Nostrica, as well as BTC Prague, Baltic Honeybadger, and Nostrasia.

And now we’re working on new formats and methods of keeping you informed about what’s happening on Nostr. As we reflect on an amazing 1st year, we have taken your feedback and suggestions to make some changes to the Nostr Report, which we announced last week and are in the process of developing. While the Daily Report was initially an effective tool, it became clear based on declining engagement, and your helpful feedback, that it was not the best content format moving forward. In addition to new content, we are also exploring new ways to sustain our efforts. We have learned a lot from operating solely on a V4V basis this past year, both in its potential and its current limitations. Our commitment to V4V continues, along with developing additional ways to support the time and efforts of our team members and contributors.

Thank you for an amazing first year! We can’t wait to see what the next 12 months have in store for all of us.

I don't like that many clients pick up my kind30023 posts as if they were the news of the hour andput them right in my feed every time I write something or even do minor edits.

I see these two kinds of posts as very different. The long-form stuff is supposed to just sit there for people interested in reading them at whatever time they see fit, while the microblogging notes are more like shouting in the middle of a public square.

Since I know that clients will get any article I write and show it to everybody I follow immediately I end up not wanting to write them anymore.

Maybe allowing people to choose if they want to "shout" about a long-form article instead (by publishing a kind1 note that quotes it) is better than the current state of things.

This makes sense because a majority of venture capital still doesn’t understand the transformative nature of the Bitcoin protocol nor how it is emerging in layers. Without this key knowledge, it would be hard to understand the profound shift this entails to businesses in the future. This leaves Bitcoin only entrepreneurs not only pitching on the value and metrics of their business, but in parallel trying to “teach” capital that has been burned with their crypto investments about a new protocol. To add insult to injury, it is many of these same Bitcoin only entrepreneurs who warned of the various scams in the crypto/web3 market in the first place. It’s not a stretch to say that those building on Bitcoin prefer a partner who understands and is focused on it. Our team believes that #Nostr , #Bitcoin , and #FreedomTech in general, are crucial tools for humanity in the world today. We've currently reported these issues for Pixels and will be filing similar issues with Samsung. We don't have as much leaked information about how they're doing it for Galaxy phones, but we can propose the same generic mitigations eliminating the main classes of vulnerabilities.

Secure element throttling is crucial to secure typical lock methods like a random 6 digit PIN or even a typical passphrase. Non-Pixel/non-iPhone devices are mostly missing it so data isn't safe even at rest for typical lock methods (much less than 7-8 random diceware words).

Pixels have used a secure element for this since the Pixel 2, but the NXP and ARM secure core Titan M1 had a fair number of vulnerabilities. Pixel 6 substantially improved this, so there's more focus on ever at exploiting the OS / firmware while the device isn't at rest.

For nearly any current generation secure element, there will likely eventually be a firmware vulnerability discovered. If you want to completely rule out a brute force, use a strong random passphrase. Can take good advantage of each user profile having separate encryption keys.

GrapheneOS has been heavily focused on securing against remote attacks and also providing privacy/security from apps. Those features make physical exploits harder, but we plan to add more features focused on it alongside auto-reboot and blocking new USB peripherals while locked.

Many apps and operating systems implement insecure duress features which can be bypassed. They do a standard wipe via reboot to recovery, which can be easily interrupted. Our implementation avoids this and will be shipped soon. However, we also proposed it to Android for the API.

Android 12 device admin API for disabling USB data is disappointing, since it's similar to what we already did and doesn't disable data lines.

Our default auto-reboot timer will be reduced from 72 hours. We also plan to add more attack surface reductions and other mitigations.

Thanks for asking this. You would be surprised how much we’ve debated over how to approach this very issue, and we still don’t have a great solution. The problem we run into is that every client renders tagged notes differently, and some clients fully render every single tagged note inline. So if we tag multiple long notes in a post, then it becomes extremely long to scroll through. We’ve experimented with using njump links or direct links to Habla.news articles mitigate. But that isn’t ideal either, especially if your client can already handle the content and then we send you out to njump. It creates unnecessary steps for users. We wish there was a way to tag a note that would tell the client not to render it, so that we can still reference the original note IDs but readers could stay fully within their client. Open to suggestions.

Very basic cashu wallet in Python and Kivy. Just sending and receiving ecash tokens for now. You can receive from different mint, but there's no way to select.

But the point is not to create another cashu wallet, there are many good ones, but to be able to communicate with the mint through Reticulum based mesh network (that's why I needed pure Python, because that's how you send LXMF messages now).

So there's some confusion about Coracle's private groups stuff, which boils down to it seeming like they don't work/exist.

What's actually going on is they rely on NIP 44 support, which is only available right now if you log in using your nsec directly, which no one does (and no one should do). Coracle also supports public groups (nip 72 communities), so if you're not logged in with your nsec, that's all you have right now.

My top priority is to get NIP 44 support merged into Alby (nprofile…lj58) and nos2x, at which point things will start to make more sense. And of course I'll be constantly tweaking the UX to make it less disorienting.

Sorry to Nunyabidness (nprofile…ghv9) and everyone else who tried the feature to surprising results.

Sure! NIP-42 is a way for clients to authenticate to relays. From the user perspective it’s seamless and invisible to you.

But it enables a relay to know what user/pubkey is connected to their relay. This is primarily used for paid relays (ex. filter.nostr.wine) or relays that only send your DMs to authenticated users (ex. nostr.wine).

filter.nostr.wine for example before NIP-42 required you to change the URL to include your npub so they knew who was connecting. However that isn’t very secure and it didn’t provide true authentication.

I’m sure there are a lot of use cases I’m missing. But at a high level it allows a relay to verify who a user/pubkey is that is connected to their relay.

Hopefully that helps explain it.

When building Lume, I'm always stuck to create a seamless experience for writing. I've tried many way, include modal style in v1, dedicate screen in v2, but it all feels unnatural for Deck UI.

I am working on a nostr-based item system for video games. Players can create their own items with customized stats (think mech parts for Armored Core 6, or guns in Call of Duty, or World of Warcraft items) but the stats must be paid for via NIP-13 proof-of-work. This enables ultimate creativity, guided by a game's stat rules, and constrained by thermodynamics. Consequently, an interesting result of a POW-based item system is that your thermodynamic power in reality can translate into in-game power, and although skill and luck should also be necessary, this can effectively make any game a proxy for real life competition.

Another interesting aspect of nostr-based game items is that you can bring your items via your pubkey into different video games, making persistent interoperable items that exist between experiences.

I setup a fundraiser on Geyser for tx fees for the OpenTimestamps calendars. One of them recently ran out entirely, and the other is close to running out. They cost about 100,000sats/week, $40/week, to run at the moment for a transaction every ~28 hours, so I'm hoping the community can chip in.

I do have funding for the server costs. Just need funds for the tx fees.
