honestly, i only have one question - and yes, this is me absolutely being the person in the audience after a talk who is asking a question mainly so the speaker can continue speaking LOL - what should the average person on the fediverse do to help make this place more welcoming for Brazilians? is there anything specific that we should be doing? even and especially if we only know english? is there any cultural trip-ups we should be on the lookout for, or is it just a good idea to generally extend grace and understanding as we welcome new friends?

how can we here on the fediverse be the most helpful to brazilians coming to join us?

i know i just said something fucking wild, but come along with me a second

it's so normalized in society that we make jokes about "con crud". like we've accepted it as inevitability that you go to a place with a large group of people, and you're going to get sick. even if it's just a little cold where you sniffle a couple of days, it's still not *fun*. like culturally we all kinda know that a convention or big indoor event is a perfect breeding ground for an annoying little virus - it's a ton of people, in an enclosed space, with people travelling in from all sorts.

so why wouldn't you wear your snotcatcher? why wouldn't you? like even before we get into how dangerous and real and scary it is, i feel like the vast majority of people - and the vast majority of events! - would realize that, y'know, we can just opt out of the inevitable con crud and that's pretty great actually. i mean if Airborne can make a business selling vitamin c supplements for "oh you're going on an airplane? you're totally gonna get a cold lol" for so long, we can think about wearing a silly little piece of paper and-or fabric over our faces lol
