My mum has increasingly bad ataxia: very wobbly hands and feet. She's got to the point of barely being able to write legibly. Using a mouse is also getting difficult, but she can still use a keyboard at this point.

Are there assistive technologies or techniques that she might be able to use on her Ubuntu machine that would reduce or eliminate the need to use a mouse?

I have some services at home (mostly managing video recordings) that I can access from outside. It took me a while to realise that while I can access them from (e.g.) rental properties, I can't usually access them from hotels.

This is because most hotel chains are still IPv4-only, but a lot of small room/cottage rentals are using recent consumer equipment, and about half of them support IPv6.

Pet peeve: that's not a crest, it's a coat of arms. The crest is the part above the mantling, which is above and behind the helm, which is above the escutcheon, and is never used independently of the rest.

So here, the crest is the red diamond, hand and spear at the top. The mantling is the fancy feathery stuff. The helm is the helmet, and the escutcheon is the shield.

We had to do something similar a couple of years ago to transfer (not as much) data from someone's on-prem into Azure, and they have a service called "DataBox", where they ship some hardware with a bunch of connectivity ports on it to a location and you plug it in however you can, copy the data across, and then ship it back.

I think they can export data the same way (at a price), but I have no idea if the same service is available for O365.

For what it's worth, I started using mosh last month on a long (2 days) rail trip.

I use mosh and tmux together, and it's been amazingly reliable, even with the "terminal" machine going to sleep overnight -- it just wakes up in the morning, reconnects, and everything's still there.

At this point, I'd say that mosh is reliable enough that you don't need to use tmux for reliability, but I like tmux for the way it handles multiple shells over a single connection.

The problem is that nobody at MS (or any other big company) will ...

There's no reason that a send stream can't be replayed on a non-btrfs filesystem (with suitable support), but the implementation in btrfs-progs is definitely btrfs-specific.

The stream format is called "FAR", and there's a far-tools (or, possibly far-progs) library in github somewhere that gives an FS-agnostic view on the stream that you could use to implement a receiver for a different FS if you wanted.

In detail... the send stream is a sequence of (mostly) userspace operations: "create a file", "create a directory", "write this data to a file", "move this thing to there".

Almost all of those operations are simply POSIX operations -- will work on any filesystem.

However, some -- a very few -- are btrfs specific. These are: "snapshot a subvolume" (used by incremental send), "reflink an extent", and "set the received UUID".
