Wow, Los Penasquitos preserve is a #butterfly wasteland today. Less than half the normal number of species I normally see right now, and the Buckwheat is all half-dead. A lot of my favorite observation spots have no attractive vegetation anymore. This year has been largely a bomb so far

The exception is the Ringlet population. This grass-loving species is really common. I saw literally hundreds of them. But I can only take so many Ringlet pix. 🤷‍♂️

I had high hopes for today’s #butterfly walk. I went down to Misdion Gorge and took the main trail (road actually) ftom the visitors center to the old Mission Dam site. The trail was lined with blooming Buckwheat on both sides most of the way. Took me forever to walk out because I was literally checking every bush for butterflies (and associated vegetation). In a 2+ km journey, I saw 4 butterflies total and only about one of those produced any usable pictures. There were some Acmon Blues in the Buckwheat at the dam site, but they were so energetic I couldn’t get close. Just when I thought things were gonna be a complete bust, I saw some Heliotrope growing in the streambed below the dam, and there was movement. This guy.

Welcoming the “Sharkbite” #mineral specimen back into my collection. I was the original owner after Jeff Swanger pulled it from the 49r Pocket back in 2007 or so. It’s been thru a number of hands since then. The challenge of course is how to display this 9 pound beast.

They took the old roundhouse down this year
Vultures stood in line to claim the ancient brick
The turntable still there, track not ripped out
Yet a tragedy of broken glass, graffiti, and forgotten needs
Grass ventures forth in cracks
The pavement old and crisp worn
Busy, the bees gather the red bread
Where will it end up?
Creeks are sluice boxes, but nothing valuable turns up
Old box springs are art that no one buys

(*This was in honor of the old brick San Jose roundhouse, visible from the Southern Pacific tracks. The old red bricks were carted away by the truckload. Who knows where they ended up?)
