Currently spinning Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey. I may have overpaid for this copy since the sleeve is pretty stained, but I couldn’t help it. I’ve been putting off getting this album on wax for a minute, and when I found an OG first pressing, I figured I just had to snag it. Totally worth the fifteen bucks at my local record store. Instead, I pull up the day after and dig through what’s left in the bins, picking off the records that somehow got overlooked. Finding this still sitting there was wild. Still thinking about @valleyboy’s set from yesterday at @kcrw @SchoolNight showcase at The Airliner. I actually wrote about one of his singles earlier this year and almost compared his voice to Jeff Buckley, which is not something I say lightly. Buckley is one of my all-time favorites, and Live at Sin-é still gets regular spins from me.<br/><br/>Last night, Valley Boy played a tight 30-minute set with songs from his upcoming album, and then he covered “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over.” I was honestly kind of stunned. I sat there with my eyes closed for part of it thinking, if I didn’t know better, this could’ve been Jeff Buckley. Since I never got the chance to see Buckley live, that moment hit in a real way.<br/><br/>If you haven’t checked out Valley Boy yet, give him a shot and spend some time with the music. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. There are certain showcases at SXSW that I always make an effort to attend, and the British Music Embassy is always one of them. They consistently put together a fantastic lineup. I stopped by their day party on Monday and caught some exciting new artists including Ben Ellis, Andrew Cushin, Hanna Leal, and Adult DVD.<br/><br/>I also popped in for a quick set yesterday and caught Carmachine, along with one of the few artists I had scheduled to see twice this week, Amie Gadiaga. Before I head back out to catch some more music, here’s one last post.<br/><br/>The best part of @sxsw is having a schedule of artists you plan to see, but then randomly stumbling into a performance that blows your mind.<br/><br/>I headed over to @swandiveaustin to check out a band on the patio stage, but a group I’d never heard of was playing inside beforehand. Within about thirty seconds I was completely locked in.<br/><br/>The band was @slashneed, and their set hit like a shot of adrenaline. The mix of pounding electronic beats, punk energy, and full-on performance art turned the room into chaos in the best way possible. Musicians I met during my first SXSW trips will always have a special place with me. I met Derek nine years ago at my very first SXSW when he was playing in Annabelle Chairlegs. He has since moved on from that band and has been a member of Daiistar for the past several years. They closed out the Spin Magazine and Typify showcase and sounded absolutely incredible. Always great seeing Derek jam, and I hope to catch him and the band again soon. My first day out at SXSW gave me one of those full circle moments. Seven years ago I caught Turbo Goth for the first time, and this year I finally got to see them again at the Spin Magazine and Typify showcase at The Courtyard in Austin. Currently spinning The Great Impersonator by Halsey. I’ve always enjoyed her music, but I gained a whole new level of respect when I learned the concept behind this record. Each song is inspired by an artist who influenced her, and it’s fascinating to hear how she writes within those frames of reference while still sounding like herself. This is a true concept album that rewards multiple listens. It did well commercially and critically, but as a music nerd, I think it deserved even more shine. I love old-school liner notes because of the stories they tell about the music. Currently spinning a piece by Heitor Villa-Lobos, a true master. His composition O Trenzinho do Caipira from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2 was inspired by a train ride he took in 1931 transporting berry pickers and farm laborers between villages in Brazil. In the arrangement, you can hear the train squeak, chug, and bump along. When I heard about Fiona Apple’s Let Her Go Home project, I was immediately intrigued. According to the project, on any given day roughly 190,600 women and girls are incarcerated in the United States, with over 60,000 women detained pretrial, presumed innocent, and jailed simply because they cannot afford bail. Fiona is raising awareness of this reality and released her first new music in about five years with the single “Pretrial (Let Her Go Home),” with seven dollars from every purchase going toward supporting women, families, and communities impacted by pretrial incarceration. Sure, a limited vinyl copy or a signed photo card would be cool, but this is really about supporting the cause. Good on Fiona.
