I had my first interview on the book. Boy, do I ramble. I need to get more precise. Hopefully, I'll improve with practice, I usually do.

I also dealt with getting the copyright on the novel. Anything with a legal whiff is unpleasant to me--I gave up practicing law 20 years ago. I loved it then. Not so much now.

The thing about "pre-Roe," is that Roe changed everything. Roe ushered in the end of clients being free to say they didn't want to work for a woman lawyer. When neither birth control NOR pregnancy was covered by insurance (pregnancy is a natural state, not an illness.) When I was told I would never make as much $ as the men (bullshit to that). Roe v. Wade didn't just give reproductive freedom. It recognized that women deserve freedom.

I posted today about two hurricanes that hit New Orleans on the same day, August 29th: Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and, 3 years ago, Hurricane Ida, which did the most damage to Louisiana since Katrina. Ida did not come to Mississippi until August 30th, where it did much less damage--we evacuated New Orleans to Mississippi during Ida. I live in both places and grieve the damage I know the storms have done to both repeatedly.

I've just about quit caring what people think about how I talk. My brain doesn't go in the usual places, and that's ok. Sometimes I have to over-narrate so people follow. Or I have to say, I'm processing what you said, because people have told me they can't read my blank look. If I'm making a larger connection between events, I'm gonna tell you. If the shirt you're wearing is a great color for you, I'll tell you. I can hear people saying, "She's an odd, odd duck." And that's ok too.

No. I learned nearly on that I couldn't do that. The characters remained flat. Never came alive. What's interesting to me is when readers believe a character is based on someone, which it never is. Our work is always a living thing in a reader's hands.

I have an extreme sensitivity to repetitive sounds. Eating noises. Gum chewing. Tapping on an iPad. Brushing teeth. Misophonia, it's called. (It's so little known, spell check underlines it.) But I like the ticking of a clock. It's human noises I can't stand. When they happen, it makes it hard for me to think. I need it to stop. Why? Who knows. but it correlates with PTSD, which I have.

That's what's been so frustrating about this. I'm so diligent about doing it the way you're supposed to—spring and fall HVAC checkups, termite contract with 6 month inspections, etc—but thanks to incompetence, it didn't matter. C'est la vie.
