I know there isn't much conversation about Fedi on NOSTR but I just ran a test transaction between my cashapp and a random fedi community wallet and it worked even though 1 of the 4 guardians were down.

I like the fact that ecash can be sent even without internet and a federated mint can be made resilient by having guardians run different set ups to ensure uptime.

Now with the new randomized guardian collection mechanism that Fedi implemented you can imagine a switch board like mechanism being used to ensure maximum uptime.

My question is, couldnt we do something similar with NOSTR. Just make it like one giant fedimint community. I mean thats kind of what it is already right?

When you come to think of it, finances should be taught as a primary requirement to graduate Highschool yet it isnt. We teach a world of other things because society "wants you to succeed" yet success in this world is tethered to the idea of wealth, so why isnt it taught?

My only question is why long term holders would think to sell at all? My reasoning is if they are long term holders then they must have been exposed to the ethics and culture that underlies bitcoin.

They experienced the upward benefits over the long term so outright selling for the sake of selling would not be rational. Perhaps they are using their money, sure, but for what do you use millions and in some cases billions of dollars?

I can only justify it with the purchasing of stocks so the liquidity is rotating into stocks. The question remains though, why take money out to put into an asset that grows at a lower rate of return?

The mental gymnastics are wild. “These 1,000 sats might be worth $10 someday, so I better hold onto them,” but that post you just read and screenshot? That idea you’re about to use in your own work? That moment of entertainment or insight? That’s worth $0 right now in your mental ledger.

Here’s the truth bomb: If you’re not willing to zap for value you’re actively consuming, you don’t actually believe in value-for-value. You believe in value-for-free with virtue signaling.

The Absurdity Test

Think about how insane this would sound in any other context. “I really loved that meal, but I’m not tipping the waiter because this $5 could be worth $50 if I invest it properly.” Or “Great haircut, but I’m going to skip paying because this $40 might appreciate if I put it in index funds.” How about “Thanks for the coffee, but technically this $6 could compound over 30 years, so I’m gonna need this one for free.”

We’d rightfully call this person a cheapskate with delusions of being a financial strategist. Yet this is EXACTLY the logic we use with zaps.

When HODL Culture Goes Wrong

The HODL mentality has broken our value calibration. Bitcoin taught us to think long-term. To delay gratification. To stack sats and hold through volatility. These are genuinely valuable lessons. But we’ve overcorrected into absurdity. We’re so focused on the future value of our sats that we’ve forgotten how to honestly assess the present value of what we’re consuming.

Here’s a framework that might hurt: Every time you consume content without zapping, ask yourself whether you would steal this if it were a physical product. Would you walk out of a bookstore with a book that gave you that much value? Would you dine and dash after a meal that satisfied you that much? Would you sneak into a movie that entertained you that much? No? Then why are you doing the digital equivalent?

“But it’s different, they chose to post it publicly for free!” Did they though? They posted it on a VALUE-FOR-VALUE network. Nostr isn’t Twitter. There’s no ad revenue. No algorithm farming. No corporate sponsor. The entire social contract of Nostr is built on the idea that if you receive value, you give value back. That’s not charity. That’s not tipping. That’s THE MODEL.

The Coffee Shop Test

You know what’s really telling? Most of us spend more on coffee in a day than we zap in a month. A single medium latte equals 15,000 to 20,000 sats at current prices. That’s potentially 20+ meaningful zaps to creators who actually provided you value. But we don’t think twice about the coffee because it’s “normal” spending, while the zaps feel like “giving away money.” The coffee is gone in 20 minutes and literally becomes piss. The post you read might change your perspective for years. Which one deserves your sats more?

The Creator Economy Death Spiral

Here’s what actually happens when everyone “waits for the pump” to be generous. Creators burn out and leave during bear markets. The platform fills with low-effort content from people who don’t need the money. By the time the pump comes, the good creators are gone. You’re left zapping shitcoiners and grifters who showed up for bull market clout. You’re not being strategic by holding your sats. You’re being penny wise and pound foolish. You’re optimizing for the wrong variable.

The Psychology of Stinginess

The truth is, we’re not actually doing sophisticated economic analysis when we skip zapping. We’re just being loss-averse in a really dumb way. Behavioral economics has shown this forever: humans feel the pain of loss roughly 2x more than the pleasure of equivalent gains. So we’re not thinking “this content is worth $1 to me.” We’re thinking “giving up these sats feels like losing future gains.” Loss aversion kicks in, and suddenly we’re rationalizing why we should consume value without reciprocating.

Not because I physically or mentally cant, the world just feels slower when I dont use it. It feels like Im using antiquated tech if I dont.

The problem I see is, I use it to bounce Ideas off the LLM and refine my thoughts. I once had to let ideas sit until I could meet with a friend long enough to really bounce the ideas off them. If people saw it like getting acquiring their fiat currency they would realize its benefits. I've been 100% bitcoin for almost a year and its crazy to see my purchasing power fluctuate, though this year its never lost any purchasing power only gained.

I mean if you save in bitcoin and use it when you need to, you'll inevitably feel the benefits. That is unless you are living paycheck to paycheck. Thats a whole other situation you have to work on.

I think ecash is probably the best scaling solution we have for bitcoin as it currently stands. While there are some interesting solutions being proposed, most if not all of these other solutions require a dramatic hard fork to the bitcoin network that I dont think are worth the risk.

I know cashu has been a hit, but I think fedimints are going to win out in the end. Its easier to place trust in an organization that in a single person. Especially if it goes the intended route of fedi where families and small communities run the fedimints. This plus bitchat could bring bitcoin finance mainstream.

Self hosting (home lab) rabit hole ruminations:

Start9, umbrel, these are great options to dip your toes into self hosting. It makes the experience digestible and if you are only interested in running the tools that the bitcoin community has labeled as necessary to be "self-soveriegn" it works out of the box and that has a world of value in of it self.

But if your are curious one. Seeking knowledge and always looking to break the next link in the long shackle that holds you from sovereignty, these options are simply not enough.

If you want to run any open source program or os when your heart desires you need access to docker. In many cases you can easily download production ready software with a two line command you can copy paste...

While start9 and umbrel have great teams working hard to bring what the people want to their systems they need sidelined options to everything and are always a few versions behind. This is the nature of the beast unfortunately.

But in this ever changing world where some of the most important tools like ai have open-source options that can't fully be utilized with what these guys offer Its more important than ever to truly understand what you are trying to achieve with these systems.

Running a bitcoin node can be done on almost anything, having your own private chat server is a nice party trick, but some of the truely powerful self hosted solutions aren't native to these ecosystems.

Im open to hear everyone's opinions but I feel I've way too quickly put grown my start 9. I may just wipe it and set a new Ubuntu or other linux image on the hardware.

Anyone else go through something similar?
