So I'm looking at what a "production" Live2D renderer would look like, and I'm torn because I think I want to use wgpu, but I need some features it doesn't support to do some things efficientlly.

To do 5.3 blend modes efficiently, I need either VK_EXT_blend_operation_advanced or VK_EXT_rasterization_order_attachment_access or [subpass self-dependency](https://developer.arm.com/community/arm-community-blogs/b/mobile-graphics-and-gaming-blog/posts/framebuffer-fetch-in-vulkan ), but WebGPU has none of those.

For efficient masking, I think it's basically going to have to be subpasses (i.e. something that lets me render a mask to an attachment, then sample it in another subpass, that stays in tile memory/cache).

(Metal has equivalents for all this too)

Another option for both is VK_EXT_fragment_shader_interlock, but that will probably suck on tilers...

How hard is it to get stuff like this added to wgpu as an extension?

Yeah, this stuff is what gives legitimate AI criticism a bad name.

A side issue around the rigging debate is, who owns the "rights" to a model, and who has the "right" to change it?

This question isn't just a business/contract question, there is a deeply moral/ethical aspect too.

As an artist (both model artist and rigger), it is reasonable to want creative control over what you create. You created it, after all!

But, is what you created really "just" a piece of art?

As a VTuber, and *especially* as an indie VTuber, my model isn't just a costume I put on, or a prop to be used for business. It is, on a much deeper level, my identity. There is a living, breathing human behind that Live2D avatar.

I can honestly say that becoming a VTuber, and especially my first model, have shaped who I am in a really deep way. Both online, and IRL.

My models aren't something selected from a catalog, they are the result of working with multiple people to figure out *who I am*.

And that's really deep! Think about how it works IRL. You can buy clothes designed by someone, or even custom made, and then you can alter them yourself. You can mix and match. They are part of your self-expression, part of who you are.

VTuber models should be similar!

I personally believe that VTubers should have the freedom to adjust their own models, within the bounds of respect for the artist and rigger. Just like you can pin items on top, you should be allowed to change outfit colors, or "embroider" a logo or text on your shirt.

Given the state of the world re AI usage, there was no way that battle was going to be won. You'd need something like "AI is ruled illegal/copyright infringing across the board in some important jurisdiction" for people to consider it toxic enough to not touch and fork each and every project whose maintenance team disagrees.

The way FOSS is interconnected, it is simply not possible to "hard partition" the dependency tree on moral concerns at scale. Pretty much the only thing that can do that is a legal code red, and it seems the lawyers have decided AI isn't one (even though many disagree).

Applying changes to code at scale, opening PRs automatically, basic interaction with human reviewers, making sure tests pass, getting things merged when ready. All that already existed before LLMs. And it was actually reliable and not capable of hallucinating terrible things.

I get that this is an *extremely* widespread myth, but people are getting irrationally angry at the idea that maybe Apple just has a really good face tracking model and it's not the camera.

Literally all they have to do is just... cover up the depth camera on an iPhone and see how the tracking still works practically the same, with just the front selfie cam.

Is there a size threshold for LLMs where, for typical training data distributions, the LLM is highly unlikely to "memorize" a copyrightable information? Is that size threshold a usable LLM? These are open questions (that nobody seems to be interested in researching).

Humans are capable of reading things and later writing a similar thing that is still a copyright violation. If I go and write a book that follows the plot line of Star Wars, that's still a copyright violation, even if no text is literally the same. If I play the melody to a song on my piano and release it without the appropriate mechanical cover license, that's also a copyright violation.

The reason this does not happen often is that, as humans, we are aware that that's plagiarism and there are rules.

LLMs have no such awareness and routinely output things which are blatant copyright violations when appropriately prompted. That means the model weights encode that work, and therefore, are themselves a derivative work.

Your brain encodes a massive amount of copyrighted information. You are not a walking copyright violation because humans aren't data, can't be copied and distributed en masse, have human rights, etc. This is why "mind reading machines" are a classic dystopian plot point (monetizing your thoughts etc).

An LLM is not a human, does not have human rights, nor human privileges. It is data, and if it encodes copyrighted information, that's a derivative work. If you aren't following the license of the training data, that's a copyright violation.

I'm looking for ethical/copyright-safe training data sets. Common Corpus sells itself as that... but then I go read the paper and they include CC BY-SA scientific papers and GPL stuff from GitHub, and then in models trained on that dataset they proudly state:

A friend asked Gemini to do a security assessment of a recent open source macOS app (look through code, developer behavior, user forums, etc).

It spat out a 2,500 word essay painting the whole thing as a massive backdoor, talking to C&C servers, reading your chat messages, bypassing macOS security, the works. Entirely coherent on the face of it, overdone but it *could* have been real and someone not in infosec would easily buy it.

100% hallucinated. Gemini wrote an entire infosec fanfic based on nothing. Worst thing I found on the real repo was a symlink traversal bug that was quickly fixed by the dev.

This was using the "Deep Research" function in "Pro" mode on an "Ultra" account.

Apparently there's a small but significant fraction of users who see their browser home reset to the Fedora home on Firefox updates or other circumstances... and they're all convinced this is some kind of evil intentional Fedora packaging feature that hijacks your preferences on every update, and that it must happen to everyone (it does not).

So far there is *one* known hypothesis for why this can happen (it involves Firefox Sync), but that doesn't cover all instances because some affected users claim not to use Sync. I reported this one upstream so hopefully there will be a solution soon. Nobody had until now...

Meanwhile, **not a single affected user has bothered to write up reliable repro steps or follow through with maintainers on tracking down the root cause**.

I've also looked at upstream bugs and found several shaped like "Firefox lost my prefs on upgrade", but none of them were followed through to a root cause either.

Of course, when Firefox loses the home page pref and it reverts to about:home, people shrug and set it back... but when Fedora Firefox does the same and it reverts to start.fedoraproject.org, it's clearly a Red Hat conspiracy to hijack people's browsers and they demand Fedora remove the default home page branding override entirely, instead of working with a developer to get the bug fixed...

It's normal for the settings to be lost after a reboot, you need the proper package to set it up automatically (the package adds all the hooks to automatically apply everything). The settings it applies are in RAM only.

PipeWire buffer settings are a different story, that's going to be part of the guide I'm writing to go along with all this so it might help you too! ^^

I've always wondered about the video clipping stuff on the Switch... 30 seconds is 1.2GB of raw video (720p30 8bit 4:2:0) so obviously it has to encode footage into H.264 in real time all the time to be able to keep the buffer in RAM to save a clip. Japan doesn't recognize same sex marriages at the national level (yet), though there are ongoing changes and exceptions and legal rulings on this issue, so depending on what you're trying to do and the specifics there are various workarounds for some of it.

Worth mentioning that Japan doesn't have "joint filing" for married couples, so we're mostly talking about spouse deductions and things like that, you're still filing separately either way. To give an example of the complexity, I believe that a dependent non-legally-recognized same sex spouse can be registered as part of the same "household" for resident registration purposes (this implies shared living expenses), and then the head of household could claim the dependent's medical expenses on their tax return.

So basically "it's complicated, talking to a lawyer/accountant recommended" ^^;;

But then again, the whole thing took about a day of work total, which isn't the worst. It helps that you don't need to fear you're going to get hit with a huge fine for a small mistake and all that (besides, they go both ways, so you bet if the tax office decided to try to go after me I'd go over my past returns and fix everything I messed up in their favor within the corrections deadline... in the end nobody wins unless you're actually trying to cheat)

The most annoying part for me is going through all my expenses to add up what needs to be deducted as a business expense and what doesn't (because I'm too lazy to use a separate card/account... ^^;;).

That, and holding currency in non JPY is a pain. I had to play weird spreadsheet games with an export of my PayPal / Kofi income (which is a USD account) to make sure it was all done "by the book", took a while to even confirm the correct algorithm.

I think many people don't bother though, a lot of it is on the honor system. If you did your best and aren't cheating on purpose you're usually OK. The extra work I did for the USD thing ended up being a tiny difference on the total in the end.
