That was my first thought. But then I was wondering if a threadiverse community using something like a Lemmy or PieFed service might be better.

But as with FediGroups, those groups are tied to the service they're set up on. A Matrix room solves that problem, but potentially introduces others.

I feel ya. The effects seem to be cumulative. I had a few burnouts in my late teens, each one got harder to fully recover from. I've had them periodically since then. I spent most of 2020 approaching burnout, and when it finally bit towards the end of the year, it took a couple of years to start pulling out of. I don't feel like I ever fully returned to baseline since then.

For those of us who are autistic *and* ADHD, this is where the conflicting needs of the 2 are at their most torturous.

The burned out autistic nervous system needs to stop, do nothing, and avoid all stimulus, until it can return to a healthy baseline. But that's kryptonite for the ADHD brain, which needs autonomous activity and chosen stimulation to return to baseline.

AuDHD burnout is fucking horrible. If I had enemies, I wouldn't wish it on any of them.

What you need to do to get out of burnout is the one thing our obsessively workaholic society doesn't went anyone to do, ever; drop everything and rest. Focus on the tasks necessary for day-to-day survival, and be compassionate with yourself when you can't even manage some of those.

Some days you can't get out of bed except to make coffee or fill your water bottle. Other days you can go out and run errands, or do a demanding work-like activity. It's totally unpredictable, and one kind of day can spontaneously transform into the other.

So planning doesn't work, and you can't be relied on for anything. But because you sometimes get a squirt of full capacity, people often judge the lack of capacity the rest of the time as a choice to be lazy.

Imagine you suddenly notice you're hungry, and you know your kitchen has all the ingredients necessary to make a range of meals. But you find yourself unable to prepare one.

Every time you start trying to decide what to make, you get lost in a dense thicket of contradictory thoughts. About what perishables in the fridge need eating and what could go with them. Or how long it's been since you ate some veges, or protein, or whatever. Or what you're hungry for.

QRCode-based payment systems are are almost as frictionless as tap-to-pay, harder to scam, and require no special hardware for vendor or buyers, unlike tap-to-pay or swipe/chip and pin EFTPOS. You can use them with wallet apps on a pocket computer, or you could have a dedicated wallet device with a QRcode scanner, a cell modem and SIM, and a pinpad.

You could even design a device that was just for cell network calls and texts, QRCode payments, and maybe hotspotting a computer via WiFi.

I'm not going to tell anyone their approach to surviving eco-societal armageddon is "wrong", unless it's demonstrably hurting others. Out of respect for diversity of tactics, for a start. But also because none of us have lived through an eco-societal collapse, so we have no objective basis to say any given approach is "wrong".

Same. I'd particularly like to see a FEP that addresses ways of doing them that don't make self-hosting a multi-domain server a headache. Also, ideally, some documentation of UX workflows that make it easy for people to BYOD to a service, and move it elsewhere later.

A service like bandwagon.fm could be a co-op, owned by the artists whose music it hosts. It could be a social enterprise, whose constitution prioritises the needs of those artists over the financial interests of owners.

But however its governance is structured, one of the best ways to keep services accountable is the freedom to leave. So social publishing services need to enable publishers to use their own domain names for account and post URLs, and provide full account export.

Sure, now that Loops exists, it's probably the better choice for posting ephemeral microvideos, as part of a social conversation, like we do with text micro-posts. But Loops isn't constrained to this kind of social communication usage. It supports videos up to 3mins long, and people could just as easily use it to publish videos they might otherwise put on a YouTub channel. In the hopes they'll still be watched and valued many years hence.

After decades of blogging, I can't help thinking of what I do on Mastodon as publishing. I link to my old posts and dig through them to find stuff, just like I do on my blogs. Conversely someone could use PeerTube to do video blogging, auto-deleting their old posts after a while like people do with their micro-posting accounts.

Similar criticisms were made of EVs in the early years of their revival, with claims you'd need a battery the size of a car to get the same range as a tank of petrol. That may even have been true at the time, but both battery tech and engine efficiency have been improved *a lot*.

Surely hydrogen-to-flight efficiency can be improved with research into engines designed specifically for hydrogen-powered aviation? But the research won't get done without work also being done on supply.

But their intrinsic motivations are totally different to those of people running a service to make a profit, or even just a living. A producer co-op doesn't make sense in the context of a dating service. The product is dates, and the producer of those is the daters, or the service itself, or an amalgam of both. A multi-stakeholder model was tried for meet.coop, but proved too complicated for bootstrapping a new online service.

At this point we've pretty much ruled out all the standard co-op ownership models.

This problem is demonstrated in the Loomio.com platform. Where despite its founding ideals and co-op structure, any change that benefits *either* worker-owners, *or* communities using the platform to make decisions, but not both, ends up weighted towards the former. A bias rationalised away on the basis that it can't serve communities if it goes out of business.

Trying to build a coherent and easily discoverable and navigable dating network like this using existing federated group/ community/ forum software just seems like a non-starter to me. I think we'd better to set up dedicated dating portals - local and specialised - and federate them into a larger search space.

One advantage of this approach is that existing dating services, like Alovoa, may be willing to add their accounts to the overall network effect.

So what you'd really need is 2 sets of communities - one seeking casual, one commitment - and each set divided into communities that cover a geographical area within which people could realistically meet. With the ability to widen searches to neighbouring areas, for the more mobile/ adventurous.

Problem being that anyone who's just joined (if theirs is the first account on their service to join) wouldn't have access to all the past messages. Unless the group had some kind of archive they could search.

A Lemmy/ MBin/ PieFed community could work better. Main problem there being the fragmentation problem, people setting up loads of different dating communities on different services, creating decision paralysis about which to join.

It would be great to get some of the Bumble founders involved in developing a federated replacement for the rapidly enshittifying Tinder, Bumble, etc. I can imagine them bringing some great insights to both a UX and Trust & Safety aspects. I wonder how I'd go about making contact with them?

Within that, a bazaar was a commons, run by and for the community that bought and sold in it. Like any sustainable commons, this required regulation, eg to avoid having stallholders selling poisonous food or faulty goods, or people stealing from stallholders, or anything else that would threaten the market's reputation.

The modern equivalent would be a supermarket run as a multi-stakeholder co-op, where workers, producers and customers all have a stake in ownership and decision-making.

Were medieval bazaars free from central government interference (ie the King and the Crown)? Yes, as most governance functions in the Middle Ages were more localised. Nation-state scale government didn't become practical until the emergence of tech like national train networks and reliable postal system, which were originally inseparable from them.

That aside, in some of the photos the 1000 yard stare of a mistreated human being stands out like a dog in a cattery. I can just about see the reflection of the people who hurt them in their eyes. It's heartbreaking.
