Let me say this upfront: I’ve barely scratched the surface, and I’m fully aware of it.

She was such a fascinating, complex, and wise woman that there’s no way I could condense her life’s work into a single entry. Still, I did my best to highlight what stood out to me the most.As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Had you heard of her before, or did you discover something new?

A small detour: while diving into this topic, I was reminded of Black Narcissus. I watched the film ages ago, and only recently discovered it was based on a novel, which I immediately picked up. I loved the eerie atmosphere and the slow-building tension. I should revisit the film, though, as I remember its tension feeling even more palpable, perhaps because cinema can play with perception in ways books do differently. I was just wrapping up a drawing when I thought to myself: it’s time, Sam, you ought to write it. And, as usual, I answered: you’re damn right. So here I am.

I’m going to share a few events from my life and some opinions, in no particular order.

The first time I listened to Death Cab For Cutie’s new album, I Built You Tower, I was cleaning my cats' litter boxes. My rule is quite simple: if I don’t feel like skipping songs that often, it means I like it. But instead, I just felt… depressed. It made me want to give Ben Gibbard a hug. At the same time, I felt slightly disappointed.

Their last album wasn’t really my cup of tea either. It felt a bit half-done. There were a few bangers, sure, but I usually love their albums as a whole, not just a few songs. I would’ve let it slide if I Built You Tower didn’t give me a similar feeling. Even the EPs before Asphalt Meadows felt somewhat incomplete. The last album I truly loved from them was Kintsugi. That one was so good, “El Dorado,” “No Room In Frame,” “Everything’s A Ceiling,” “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive”… you get the point.

I remember listening to Asphalt Meadows alongside Deafheaven’s Infinite Granite and feeling a bit off. I expected something smoother from Death Cab and something heavier from Deafheaven. I didn’t really get that contrast. Still, Infinite Granite grew on me, it’s a great album, even if it can feel disconcerting at first. Death Cab, though, didn’t quite land for me at the time.

So I wanted to do something different. The other day, I gave I Built You A Tower another chance. This time, while baking brownies and pizza (both homemade, of course). And I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it much more. It felt like a walk down memory lane, closer to their older sound. Still, the lyrics felt a bit repetitive, tiredness, abandonment, being ignored. Those themes have always been there in their songs, but this time they felt less balanced. Less wit, and a bit less eeriness. Just… sad and a bit flat. Even so, they’re still dear to me, and I’ll always look forward to what they do next.

A few songs I truly enjoyed were "I Envy the Birds," "How Heavenly State," "Trap Door" and the B side version of the title song. Which made me think, maybe it's not the fact the lyrics are bland. Maybe their sound no longer goes with their lyrics. I Built You A Tower was an example of it and made me realise how so much better that song was on that other version, it gave it that eeriness, that Death Cab sound with a fresh twist. That song was a bit difficult to get out of my head.

Now, the baking 🤤 uff. That brownie was incredible, gooey, intensely chocolatey, just perfect. And the pizza was really chef's kiss, so I guess kiss kiss to myself. I’m genuinely proud of it. My last attempt was edible and good but not quite there yet, but this time it was a success. Overall, a very satisfying meal.

I’ve also been baking Hawaiian bread, and it turned out surprisingly well, soft, spongy, with a subtle sweetness from the pineapple juice that I really enjoy. And I cannot stress enough the importance of a thermometer in this type of cases. Most of the time I willy nilly it, and I think most of us do it too, you get the hang of it and you may get away with it, but having that extra layer of security a thermometer gives, it's just heavenly. I started using when I made eggnog during winter and I've been using it ever since and now it's become one of my staples while baking.

And yes, since it’s still summer, I made chocolate ice cream. And I love it (the ice cream not so much the heat).

On another note, you might remember I built a Game Boy DMG with a Raspberry Pi (not a tower). And I’ve been playing on it a lot lately and whenever I can. I'm getting ready to fight Misty. I'm also listening to the Pokémon Yellow soundtrack while just roaming around the house. Also, because Pokémon has fully taken over my brain, my husband and I have been playing a Pokémon memory game together, it’s been a lot of fun. He's also been playing Pokémon, but on his phone and and a sort of enhanced version of my yellow one. It's called Pokémon Añil.

As usual, I’m working on a little something, so stay tuned.

in the meantime I've also been reading some stuff and it's one of my ways of stepping out of the living hell this heatwave has turned our lives to. I must confess I don't think zombies were engineered with some evil compound or rabies… it was the heatwave. That’s what makes you feral. But enough drama.

Sometimes, I really wish I made more time for these little updates, but it’s always a choice between reading and writing and I almost always choose the former.

Now, let’s talk about what I’ve been reading and watching lately.

When 30 Days of Night came out, I watched it in the cinema during a late-night session. When I got home, I was genuinely spooked, I thought the vampires were going to jump through my window like in the movie. So yes, I was terrified, but I also loved it. I looked up the comic afterward and loved it even more. The artwork is fantastic, truly chef’s kiss.

They changed a few things in the adaptation, but overall it stayed very faithful to the comic. Fast forward to now, I rewatched the film and reread the comic, and I appreciated it even more. I’m a sucker for a good comic, and if it has vampires, I’ll probably like it. If you haven’t checked it out, you’re in for a good scare.

Wanting something similar, I picked up another comic called Hotell, an anthology of interconnected stories. It’s a bit eerie. I didn’t enjoy it as much, but it was still entertaining. The artwork is cleaner than 30 Days of Night, though less striking.

I also stumbled upon How to Keep House While Drowning. I couldn’t finish it. It felt a bit repetitive, and the writing style reminded me too much of Instagram captions or TikTok scripts. At one point, the suggested solution for piles of dirty clothes was to just buy baskets for every room and throw everything in there until you wash it. That didn’t sit right with me. The overconsumption of it all.

If the issue is being overwhelmed by too much stuff, maybe decluttering should come first. Still, I appreciated one idea: cleaning is morally neutral. It’s not a virtue, and not doing it isn’t a moral failure either. That’s a helpful reminder to act from care rather than shame.

Out of curiosity (and boredom), I also read some books from the Off Campus series. They were… okay. Surprisingly decent, actually. But they follow a very predictable formula, they are enemies and then lovers. They are forced to interact for some decent enough reason, then there's tension (of course), denial, then falling for each other, followed by a breakup that isn’t really final, and then back together stronger than ever.

They were entertaining, and I laughed here and there. They’re definitely spicy, which I don’t mind but I do think they shouldn’t be marketed in a way that appeals to younger readers. The covers can be misleading.

If they act as a gateway into reading more and eventually better books, then fair enough, I'll always them haha. I think of them like fast fashion, they are quite enjoyable, easy, and everywhere but they are not particularly deep. Oh, and they are also quite forgettable.

I also reread Breakfast at Tiffany’s for the millionth time. I absolutely love that book. Don’t be fooled by the title, Capote creates this captivating aura around Holly Golightly. She’s both alluring and mysterious. The movie differs quite a bit from the book, and Capote himself wasn’t entirely happy with the adaptation, though he did approve of Audrey Hepburn and she really does capture Holly beautifully.

And because I love Audrey Hepburn, I watched The Children’s Hour for the first time. I was hooked immediately. I needed to know what would happen. It was emotionally intense from start to finish, I was genuinely overwhelmed by the end. The actress who plays one of the students is phenomenal. I found myself yelling “no!” at the screen more than once.

And of course, I rewatched Roman Holiday. That movie always makes me want to get a Vespa, eat gelato, throw it away mid-conversation, and just dance through the night. Maybe break a guitar over someone’s head for dramatic effect. The perfect European summer holiday.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve been reading and watching lately. Once I post my next blog entry, you’ll see what else I’ve been into.

Hello frens, it's been a minute since I dived deep into a new topic, but oh boy, am I excited and nervous about posting this one. It took a lot of research, and I’ll hopefully add more illustrations soon, for now, I’m really happy with how it turned out.

So… what did I write about? Exorcisms. For a while, exorcisms were a bit of a “Jesus take the wheel” situation, but as we’ll see, there were actually procedures and rules that had to be respected. Not just any layperson was supposed to be doing them if it could be avoided.

Come along for the ride and tell me what you think.

I had a blast drawing this time and I want to draw even more. You know I love my furry kids, they’re adorable to me, but maybe not to everyone, so this time I didn’t put anything in my shop. If you are interested, though, let me know.

I know the title of this piece sounds like a Fall Out Boy song off of From Under the Cork Tree, but it pretty much sums the whole thing up.

I’ve been all over the place lately, but at the same time spending a lot of quiet, cozy moments with my beloved ones.

It’s been a really nice balance.

I’m super excited about my upcoming blog post. I’ve been writing and painting for it over the past few weeks. If you’re feeling curious in the meantime, you can always peek at some of my older posts: Holy Week, the Spanish Inquisition, lunar and lunisolar calendars, or even Ostara, now that we’re officially in spring.

But I’ve also been soaking up the early spring sun, enjoying the chilly air, and diving into some slasher films.

A few spoilers ahead, you’ve been warned 👀

Nothing too fancy, but with all the hype around the new Scream movie, my husband and I decided to start watching them. We did it in full Star Wars chaos mode: watched the first two, then jumped to the 5th, then the 6th, then went back to the 3rd and 4th. Now we’re not even sure if we’ll watch the newest one. Have you seen it?

I think I really loved the first two. It’s almost unbelievable how closely Scary Movie mirrors them, it’s basically a parody copy-paste. I did not remember that. We were screaming at the screen the entire time like: “Double tap to the head!” It was almost as they did not watch Zombieland. But seriously… Why do they (most of the time) have to announce themselves before trying to kill Ghostface? Why do they have to check something or someone? JUST RUN.

The fourth one was actually kind of wild because I thought how funny that they were so ahead of their time. All that commentary about people posting their entire lives online and others obsessively watching it… chills, honestly. Also there was a nod to Wes Craven, since the character Wes dies and they sort of honor him that way.

Now, for the slasher side of things: the gore definitely gets turned up to eleven in the 5th and 6th movies. The plots are still simple, like the originals, but they spice things up with new characters. And I guess Billy Loomis showing up again has something to do with the actor’s comeback thanks to Riverdale (as Jughead's dad).

The voice of a generation, truly.

Nostalgia + new blood seems to be the formula now, and they were right about that one. That said… it’s a shame about the final girl being fired. It also means her sister won’t be coming back either. Looks like they’re going back to the beginning… good luck explaining how certain dead characters return without ghosts or hallucinations.

Anyway, I was still craving more stab-stabbity-stab movies, and my husband found the Fear Street movies (based on R.L. Stine). And wow, we were in for a ride.

I absolutely loved them. Such a pleasant surprise. I read Goosebumps as a kid (and the HorrorLand series), but never really got into his more teen-focused stories, so I don’t know how faithful the movies are, but they were great. NO ONE is safe, and I loved that energy.

Two of Stranger Things actors are on the movies and I think they play kind of the same character in it too. Still, I didn’t mind, the plot was entertaining, and the focus was on other characters anyway, for the most of the movies. I’d definitely recommend them.

And finally, we watched the first Smile movie. I found it kind of sad, actually. Don’t get me wrong (I did get jump-scared) but beyond the simple premise, there are some layers that make you feel for the protagonist. It taps into how easy it is to dismiss people, and how trauma can spiral into something terrifying. A bit heavy… but effective.

So, the past couple of weeks have been pretty exciting overall and movie-wise, very bloody, oozy, and delightfully unhinged hehe.

PS: I drew one of the killers from Fear Street and the one and only Ghostface hehe. Dark and horror art will always be my roots, it’s where I started. Even if I’ve been exploring other genres lately, I’ll always enjoy drawing a villain or two.

Whatever your case, I salute you! I’ve spent most of this winter bundled up with my furry kids, trying to make sure they play fair and not scream like little banshees while I catch up on some reading.

One of the books I finally got to was Cackle. I meant to read it back in autumn (you know, for the ~vibes~) but ended up diving into it in the middle of winter. Now it’s nearly spring, and here I am writing about it! Honestly, this one surprised me. I wasn’t expecting much (it did seem like a themed “autumn read”), but I actually loved it. I cackled here and there as I followed the protagonist coping with the quiet heartbreak of a long-term breakup while adjusting to life in a quirky small town. It’s an easy, breezy read with plenty of dry humor. I’ll definitely be picking up more from this author.

I also read Practical Magic. This one was also on my autumn list, but the tone is very different, more serious and spanning multiple generations of mystical women (yes, witches!). It reminded me a bit of Isabel Allende’s storytelling, that tender, magical realism that flows through family histories. The book follows three generations of women, centered mostly on two sisters, as they navigate life, love, and all the beautiful messiness that comes with embracing their true selves. It isn’t a linear story, which made it feel all the more organic. I loved it so much that I’m already reading the second book!

Then there was The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov. It had been years since I’d read anything by him, but my husband and I have a little book club, so we picked it up together. It took me a while to get into, it’s a bit Kafkaesque, with overlapping perspectives and absurd situations but once it clicked, I was hooked. The pacing is brisk, the ideas brilliant, and even though the ending fell a bit flat, I genuinely enjoyed the experience.

Also, I finished the last two books in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. I’d already watched the movie (which was very much entertaining), so I decided to skip the first novel for now, though I’ll probably circle back later. These books were a riot.

Even without being too familiar with Singaporean culture, I had such a fun time. The absurd luxury, chaotic family politics, and outrageous situations had me laughing and snorting out loud more than once. The cast is enormous, so I’d recommend keeping a pen and paper handy to track the family tree! Totally worth it, though, they’re hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt.

Oh, doing a 180, going with raw and unexpected reads, I also picked up Half His Age. I had already read Jennette McCurdy’s memoir and loved it, so I was curious about this one since it’s said to be loosely based on her life. As for her being an actress, I only learned about the Nickelodeon scandals with her book, so reading about what she endured (both on set and at home) left me angry for her, but also amazed at how she manages to make you laugh in the middle of such horrible situations. In this new book, her teen main character is awkward, weird, painfully self-aware, and full of disappointment, while dealing with hidden needs and an affair with her teacher. It’s unsettling, honest, and funny in that uncomfortable, human way. She captures the contradictions of trauma so well that I cannot wait for her next book.

And of course, I’ve been reading quite a bit lately for my blog too (and I have new blog entry about calendars and the moon 👀) and if I’m not careful, my brain’s going to melt like something out of Braindead, and I’ll start haunting people from the other side.

So, what have you been reading lately? I’d love to hear your recommendations.

Today is Friday and Rebecca Black surely knows it, as do we all. But so does my buddy Jason, hehe.

There are many reasons people consider Friday the 13th unlucky. Some say it’s because Judas was the thirteenth guest at the Last Supper (if Jesus is your jam, by the way, I’ve got a few posts about him from Holy Week to his birth and life, just saying).

Others claim one of the Templars cursed this day, since it was when their order was arrested for their supposed “little felonies.” Ever since, the day’s had a bit of a dark shadow. (If you’re into that lore, I also wrote a piece about the Templars, Levi, Crowley and Baphomet, check it out 👀).

As for me? I don’t know, I just hope I don’t run into Jason Voorhees and his humongous machete, or end up as the thirteenth guest anywhere. No offense to Jesus, of course. I just try to make the best of what I have and stay open to good things.

It’s also a funny time (the day before Valentine’s) when the pressure of romance and commercial expectations can make people feel weird. But really, don’t sweat it. Love day is a recent tradition anyway. What matters most is spending time, with ourselves or our loved ones, and making the day ours.

So whether that means cooking that special meal you’ve been postponing, baking that sweet treat you’ve been craving, or simply resting in good company, treat yourself kindly.

Maybe I am a little cheesy: just a simple woman trying to bake something delicious, decompress, and chill with her favorite people.

Oh my, whenever I share something new, whether it’s a drawing, a painting, an illustration, or a blog entry that ties them together, I get all jittery. I giggle like a kid because it means weeks (sometimes months!) of work, and weaving together my thoughts, are finally ready to meet the world. I’ve always loved reading (no secret there), but discovering how much I love writing too? That surprised me! Bringing my blog entries to life with illustrations I made myself: that’s chef’s kiss. I really hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy creating them.

Of course, it’s not always sunshine and rainbows behind the scenes. Sometimes I hesitate, doubt myself, scrap everything, and start over. Other times I just feel off: tired, demotivated, or a little under the weather... And I have to pause. It’s a privilege to be able to do that, I know, but I’ve learned that if I don’t rest (even for “just a moment”… which can be any length of time, really), I end up running on empty. And when that happens, nothing feels genuine anymore.

So I try my best, even if “my best” that day means "only doodling" or not creating at all because, well, life doesn’t pause for art. Between work, daily to-dos, and meeting the very strict demands of my furry overlords (belly rubs for at least 3 hours a day, songs every two hours. It’s a regime, really 🐾), things can get hectic!

So I hope you find small pauses, too. Even if life’s chaos doesn’t always allow it, we can’t run on empty forever. Eventually, body, mind, and soul will hand you the bill and trust me, it’s steep.

Take a break when you can. Soak in the little things, be present for the mundane moments that make life sweet. Maybe even do that by reading my new post about Imbolc, Lupercalia, and Februalia instead of doomscrolling through people who probably don’t deserve your screen time 😉

Anyway, that’s me: a woman entirely ruled by her furry kids, still bedazzled by Christmas lights and giggling at the parade Santa (even though we both know the real one’s up at the North Pole 😜).

Wishing you warmth, rest, and all the fuzzy feelings possible.

Okay, maybe not that dramatic but I have been a bit MIA lately. Not because I was off gambling away my inheritance, no! I was rejoicing in the beauty of the season. How I love Christmas! I do! I’ve been soaking it all in: the lights, the warmth, the food. I even wrote and illustrated a little piece called The Birth of Jesus and got so wrapped up in it that I’m still coming down from that creative high.

Anyway, I’m not here to brag about how the outside world hypnotized me with its colors and cookies (though I have been baking like crazy, right now I have a sandwich loaf in the oven as I type this). I’m here to talk about a man: Robert Jordan. Me and him, we already have a bit of a connection (latest exhibit). I can almost hear him saying, “Goddamn it, woman, leave me alone!” But I can’t. I’ve been reading The Shadow Rising, and I have thoughts.

First off: Jordan takes things seriously in this one. It reminded me of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, that shift where everything suddenly feels weightier, darker, more real. That said, some sections dragged a bit. Dense, even boring at times. The pacing could’ve been tighter, and a few explanations more concise. But then, when you push past that… wow. The payoff is so worth it. Once I got back into it, I devoured the pages.

And then... that ending. That cliffhanger! It’s borderline cruel. I sat there, just staring at the page, internally screaming.

I do wish he gave more depth to certain characters, especially since he spends so much time fleshing out the others. But the narrative? You’ll get absolutely soaked (pun intended). Despite some slow sections, my Bobby Boy delivers again.

I’m jumping straight into the next book in the series, and also reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo with my husband (yes, book club style, I’m very excited!).
