Growing up in the early nineties granted children access to the digital Wild West. No cookie settings, no passwords, complete anonymity. You could pretend to be anybody you wanted, which was also kind of fun for a young kid. The opportunities to speak with anyone on the planet and build new digital tools and systems seemed limitless. This was the backdrop to how a California skater kid learned to code.

Jeff Gardner, founder of White Noise, cut his teeth in the traditional VC-backed tech startup ecosystem.

“I remember working in one of the early tech startups, and we were implementing and deleting things in the app. 'Deleting' meant adding a flag in the database. It was 'deleted', but not actually deleted. It wasn't removed from the database.”

After initially holding a naive view of free services from Big Tech, he saw freedoms curtailed during COVID, which made him consider the systems he contributed to and used.

“When I saw Nostr, I understood that this was the way out. This is our escape hatch. We can go back to an early open Internet where it's actually owned and run by the users rather than owned and run by five companies.”

After seeing the possibilities of protocols like Nostr, Gardner closed down his startup and began to build decentralized systems.

A Renewed Drive for Freedom

According to Gardner, the entire premise of Silicon Valley tech has been built on hacking the weak points of the human brain to monetize users, rather than finding customers and providing a valuable service.

“I've got three little kids,” he says, “and we're at the point where our oldest is starting to use digital things. It's a one-way door, right? Every time you add your name to a website, every time you put a picture of yourself online, you really can't get it back. The Internet is a copy machine.”

The only exit from that system is not to give companies the data in the first place, but that requires parallel privacy services for email, social, chat, and more.

After 2020, Gardner’s forays into the Nostr developer community led him to form a group with the idea of fixing messaging. One major issue was that messages showed all the metadata around who was talking to whom. Ultimately, this led to NIP 17, a ‘band aid’ which fixed the metadata issue, but not the clunky and poorly scaled group messaging.

While privacy-focused chat may not be in the mainstream consciousness just yet, it is growing (Signal App posted user numbers of 70 million in 2024). Gardner sees a wide range of privacy-seeking niche groups who could benefit from a decentralized, scalable privacy chat.

“Writers have sources,” he explained, “and they have to talk together and gather information, while protecting their sources. If you want to use Signal to do that right now, it's connected to your phone number and, therefore, your identity. With Nostr being an open protocol, you can create as many identities as you want. They're all just key pairs. You can talk to your different sources or your different sources of information or whatever. Totally different identities as different people.”

With 72% of the world living under authoritarian regimes , there is a growing number of high-risk actions when it comes to platforms connected to real-world identities. Gardner and the White Noise team adhere to the cypherpunk ethos that open, unstoppable protocols are a net positive for people all around the world to have.

Do We Really Need Another App?

When asked about the need for another chat app, Gardner pointed to the unique nature of White Noise being decentralized, encrypted, and scalable.

Although the forward secrecy and post-compromise security of the Signal algorithm are considered the gold standard of encryption, the organization itself represents a single point of failure.

“The one big drawback of Signal is that they are a big centralized entity, and they have to spend $50,000,000 a year on servers. And that means that if they ran out of funding or they had to shut down their system, Signal would just disappear for everybody overnight.”

Gardner’s White Noise project aims for Signal-level encryption capabilities and privacy, but on a resilient open protocol where the servers themselves can be swapped out.

Marmot — The Decentralized Privacy Stack

To build White Noise, Gardner published Marmot — an open protocol harnessing Messaging Layer Security (MLS), Nostr, and Blossom.

“Using the Marmot protocol means we can make interoperable clients. So instead of having just the Signal app that can talk to just the Signal app, we can have White Noise that can talk to Primal or White Noise that can talk to Amethyst on Android.”

He stressed the need for open-source contributors and ‘more eyes’ to ensure Marmot and White Noise remain secure and optimized for more users (the protocol is in the middle of its very first audit right now).

The overall aim with Marmot was to be able to encrypt direct messages (but also group messages) with hopefully arbitrarily large groups, up to the millions. Gardner went on to explain exactly how Marmot functions:

“MLS is a good framework for key agreement and sharing of keys in a large group in a way that keeps forward-secrecy and post-compromise security. What happens when you start an MLS group is that I create it with just me in it. You give me your key that you want me to use, and I invite you to the group with that key. And then I send you a welcome message with just enough information that you can then construct the identical version of the group state, which is called the ratchet tree on your side.

So now we both have a copy of this ratchet tree. Right? Side by side. And as we keep talking and things change over time, so say I add someone else to the chat, which basically adds a state or changes the state of the group in some predictable way.”

The Path Forward

So far, White Noise has relied on generous grants from OpenSats and the Human Rights Foundation among donors. In the coming months, the project will be registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means that donations from any individual or entity in the US will be tax-deductible.

“Taking in donations from a variety of sources is a really important part for us,” continues Gardner. “We don't wanna end up in a situation like ToR, where a vast portion of their funding comes from one source, which can dry up. And so I think we'll push really hard on using that cool feature of Nostr that people can just zap you.”

A Call for Developers

When asked how others can get involved in the project, Gardner stressed the need for more developers to join the cause. “Just go on GitHub, see the code, look at the issue list, pick something you wanna work on, or just pick something you wanna work on and send us a PR.”

Building connections, as well as submitting perfect code, is important when working on open-source projects in the freedom space.

Finally, Gardner summed up the current challenges facing the project.

“For White Noise to even be able to credibly compete even closely with Signal, WhatsApp, or Telegram, we've got to build a lot of things, and we've got to do it really well. I think that we do need to shift that conversation away from censorship resistance and talk more about the things that you can only do on Nostr, like getting zaps.”

The difference between a service that dies and a protocol that survives is architectural. A service has an operator and a legal jurisdiction that can be pressured. A protocol has none of these, which is why a single injunction killed Napster while two hundred thousand lawsuits did nothing to BitTorrent. The design decision that separates them is whether the system requires any specific human being to continue operating. If it does, that human is the attack surface.

This principle extends to every layer of the stack. A smart contract deployed to a blockchain that no one can modify or withdraw falls outside the reach of sanctions law, because what belongs to no one cannot be sanctioned. Code that requires an operator to run a server or coordinate transactions creates a pressure point that the state will eventually find and squeeze. The architectural question every protocol designer must answer: after I walk away, does this keep running?

Governments have converged on five strategies for attacking systems they cannot shut down directly.

The first is prosecuting developers. When code itself is beyond reach, the people who wrote it become targets. Privacy tool developers have faced criminal charges for money laundering and operating unlicensed money transmitting businesses, with sentences measured in years and forfeitures measured in hundreds of millions. The legal theory that building a tool makes you responsible for its misuse has been applied even when the tool operates autonomously after deployment. For builders, the practical implication is clear: legal exposure correlates with operational involvement. Writing and deploying immutable code carries less legal surface area than running a service built on that code.

The second is controlling distribution. A protocol that cannot reach users exists only in theory. App store gatekeepers control software distribution for billions of devices and have removed privacy-focused applications without explanation or recourse. Any system depending on a single distribution channel has a single point of failure, regardless of how decentralized its protocol layer might be. Sideloading, alternative stores, progressive web apps, and direct binary distribution all provide redundancy, but each one narrows the potential user base. Building for multiple distribution channels from the start is cheaper than retrofitting after your primary channel disappears.

The third is attacking the network layer. Deep packet inspection identifies protocol traffic by its byte patterns, and governments with sufficient infrastructure block identified traffic at the ISP level. The most aggressive approach blocks all fully encrypted traffic that fails to match known protocol fingerprints, accepting collateral damage to legitimate services. The countermeasure is encrypted transport that makes protocol traffic indistinguishable from ordinary web traffic. When blocking your protocol means blocking HTTPS itself, only a government willing to break its own internet can sustain the censorship.

The fourth is exploiting centralization. Decentralized protocols tend to centralize in practice. When two mining pools control over fifty percent of block production under one regulatory jurisdiction, or one relay handles seventy percent of all posts, the protocol's theoretical decentralization is operationally meaningless. These concentration points create pressure that regulators can exercise at trivial cost. Dominant relays and large mining pools exist because users and operators choose convenience over distribution, and every one of them is a target.

The fifth is economic attrition through compliance costs. The global anti-money laundering system costs $275 billion per year and catches less than one percent of criminal proceeds. Banks spend hundreds of millions each on compliance to avoid regulatory penalties; crime prevention is incidental to the calculation. Each enforcement action against a protocol creates a new compliance category, generating demand for new monitoring tools. The compliance industry grows with each demonstration of its own ineffectiveness. The cost falls on every entity that interfaces between open protocols and the traditional financial system, creating a buffer zone of institutions too afraid of regulatory liability to touch anything novel.

The protocols that survive these attacks share a set of design properties, each one a direct answer to one of the vectors above.

Eliminate operator dependency. If the system requires a specific person or company to function, that person or company will eventually be pressured or arrested. The design target is a system that runs on any willing machine with no coordination from its creators. The test: if every original developer disappeared tomorrow, would the protocol keep running without them?

Build redundant distribution from day one. Satellite broadcasts requiring only a receiver dish and mesh networks operating on unlicensed radio spectrum both eliminate potential chokepoints at layers the state does not control. No single distribution channel should be necessary for the protocol to reach its users. The projects that treat distribution as an afterthought discover its importance when their primary channel vanishes overnight.

Encrypt all transport by default. Traffic that is identifiable is traffic that can be blocked. Encrypted transport that makes every byte appear uniformly random forces censors into an expensive choice: block all unidentified encrypted traffic and accept massive collateral damage, or allow the protocol through. For protocols operating in adversarial environments, this is a survival requirement.

Treat decentralization as a discipline. The natural tendency of every network is to concentrate around a few high-capacity nodes, and this tendency must be actively resisted through relay diversity, geographic distribution of infrastructure, multiple independent client implementations, and low barriers to running nodes. A protocol that launches decentralized and drifts toward concentration has a shelf life determined by how long it takes regulators to notice.

Intellectual honesty demands acknowledging the limits. Governments do not need to break the cryptography. They need to make the human interfaces painful enough that ordinary users never encounter the protocol at all. A system confined to sideloaded apps and terminal commands will serve its committed users, but it will not become the default communication layer for a billion people. The UX gap between centralized services and decentralized protocols remains the most effective form of soft censorship, and no architectural principle solves it alone.

The economic asymmetry cuts both ways. Protocol adaptation is cheap, but building usable software is expensive. The open-source projects that sustain these protocols operate on budgets that would not cover a single bank's compliance department. Survival and mass adoption are different problems requiring different resources, and most protocols will achieve the first without ever reaching the second.

The humans who build these protocols pay real costs: years behind bars and millions in forfeiture. The code they write pays nothing. It copies itself across every willing machine on the network, indifferent to the legal theories arrayed against its creators. The state can punish the hand that types, but it has never succeeded in erasing what was typed. For builders, the lesson is structural: design for a world where you are not around to run it, distribute through channels no single entity controls, encrypt so censors cannot identify it, and resist the centralization that makes all other defenses irrelevant.

Growing up in the early nineties granted children access to the digital Wild West. No cookie settings, no passwords, complete anonymity. You could pretend to be anybody you wanted, which was also kind of fun for a young kid. The opportunities to speak with anyone on the planet and build new digital tools and systems seemed limitless. This was the backdrop to how a California skater kid learned to code.

Jeff Gardner, founder of White Noise, cut his teeth in the traditional VC-backed tech startup ecosystem.

“I remember working in one of the early tech startups, and we were implementing and deleting things in the app. 'Deleting' meant adding a flag in the database. It was 'deleted', but not actually deleted. It wasn't removed from the database.”

After initially holding a naive view of free services from Big Tech, he saw freedoms curtailed during COVID, which made him consider the systems he contributed to and used.

“When I saw Nostr, I understood that this was the way out. This is our escape hatch. We can go back to an early open Internet where it's actually owned and run by the users rather than owned and run by five companies.”

After seeing the possibilities of protocols like Nostr, Gardner closed down his startup and began to build decentralized systems.

A Renewed Drive for Freedom

According to Gardner, the entire premise of Silicon Valley tech has been built on hacking the weak points of the human brain to monetize users, rather than finding customers and providing a valuable service.

“I've got three little kids,” he says, “and we're at the point where our oldest is starting to use digital things. It's a one-way door, right? Every time you add your name to a website, every time you put a picture of yourself online, you really can't get it back. The Internet is a copy machine.”

The only exit from that system is not to give companies the data in the first place, but that requires parallel privacy services for email, social, chat, and more.

After 2020, Gardner’s forays into the Nostr developer community led him to form a group with the idea of fixing messaging. One major issue was that messages showed all the metadata around who was talking to whom. Ultimately, this led to NIP 17, a ‘band aid’ which fixed the metadata issue, but not the clunky and poorly scaled group messaging.

While privacy-focused chat may not be in the mainstream consciousness just yet, it is growing (Signal App posted user numbers of 70 million in 2024). Gardner sees a wide range of privacy-seeking niche groups who could benefit from a decentralized, scalable privacy chat.

“Writers have sources,” he explained, “and they have to talk together and gather information, while protecting their sources. If you want to use Signal to do that right now, it's connected to your phone number and, therefore, your identity. With Nostr being an open protocol, you can create as many identities as you want. They're all just key pairs. You can talk to your different sources or your different sources of information or whatever. Totally different identities as different people.”

With 72% of the world living under authoritarian regimes , there is a growing number of high-risk actions when it comes to platforms connected to real-world identities. Gardner and the White Noise team adhere to the cypherpunk ethos that open, unstoppable protocols are a net positive for people all around the world to have.

Do We Really Need Another App?

When asked about the need for another chat app, Gardner pointed to the unique nature of White Noise being decentralized, encrypted, and scalable.

Although the forward secrecy and post-compromise security of the Signal algorithm are considered the gold standard of encryption, the organization itself represents a single point of failure.

“The one big drawback of Signal is that they are a big centralized entity, and they have to spend $50,000,000 a year on servers. And that means that if they ran out of funding or they had to shut down their system, Signal would just disappear for everybody overnight.”

Gardner’s White Noise project aims for Signal-level encryption capabilities and privacy, but on a resilient open protocol where the servers themselves can be swapped out.

Marmot — The Decentralized Privacy Stack

To build White Noise, Gardner published Marmot — an open protocol harnessing Messaging Layer Security (MLS), Nostr, and Blossom.

“Using the Marmot protocol means we can make interoperable clients. So instead of having just the Signal app that can talk to just the Signal app, we can have White Noise that can talk to Primal or White Noise that can talk to Amethyst on Android.”

He stressed the need for open-source contributors and ‘more eyes’ to ensure Marmot and White Noise remain secure and optimized for more users (the protocol is in the middle of its very first audit right now).

The overall aim with Marmot was to be able to encrypt direct messages (but also group messages) with hopefully arbitrarily large groups, up to the millions. Gardner went on to explain exactly how Marmot functions:

“MLS is a good framework for key agreement and sharing of keys in a large group in a way that keeps forward-secrecy and post-compromise security. What happens when you start an MLS group is that I create it with just me in it. You give me your key that you want me to use, and I invite you to the group with that key. And then I send you a welcome message with just enough information that you can then construct the identical version of the group state, which is called the ratchet tree on your side.

So now we both have a copy of this ratchet tree. Right? Side by side. And as we keep talking and things change over time, so say I add someone else to the chat, which basically adds a state or changes the state of the group in some predictable way.”

The Path Forward

So far, White Noise has relied on generous grants from OpenSats and the Human Rights Foundation among donors. In the coming months, the project will be registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means that donations from any individual or entity in the US will be tax-deductible.

“Taking in donations from a variety of sources is a really important part for us,” continues Gardner. “We don't wanna end up in a situation like ToR, where a vast portion of their funding comes from one source, which can dry up. And so I think we'll push really hard on using that cool feature of Nostr that people can just zap you.”

A Call for Developers

When asked how others can get involved in the project, Gardner stressed the need for more developers to join the cause. “Just go on GitHub, see the code, look at the issue list, pick something you wanna work on, or just pick something you wanna work on and send us a PR.”

Building connections, as well as submitting perfect code, is important when working on open-source projects in the freedom space.

Finally, Gardner summed up the current challenges facing the project.

“For White Noise to even be able to credibly compete even closely with Signal, WhatsApp, or Telegram, we've got to build a lot of things, and we've got to do it really well. I think that we do need to shift that conversation away from censorship resistance and talk more about the things that you can only do on Nostr, like getting zaps.”

My post wasn't meant to imply that radical change is bad, but rather to express a personal preference for how I want to engage with the transition right now. I see two different styles of engagement—sometimes expressed by the same people. There are those who channel their energy into fighting against the current system (which is a valid and often necessary radical stance), and there are those who focus on building the parallel society quietly.

My choice to ignore complaining and focus on positive reinforcement for builders isn't a judgment against those who fight; it's just a strategy to protect my own energy and keep the momentum positive. I think we need both the critics and the builders to succeed.

Some Thoughts on Adoption (and other nonsense).

There's this old Louis C.K. clip—recorded long before he was cancelled—that summarizes our modern conundrum well: "Everything's amazing and nobody's happy."

As I was walking towards the hospital today—after a way too early 5:30 rise—it dawned on me that wide-scale nostr adoption (and "proper" wide-scale bitcoin adoption, for that matter) is probably not going to happen. The good news is that it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. The bad news is that lots of people will suffer.

"Why so bearish?" I hear you ask. If you know me just a little bit you'll know that, even though I do have many faults, being bearish isn't one of them. I'm still incredibly optimistic when it comes to the adoption and proliferation of freedom tech. Otherwise I wouldn't be doing what I do.

Here's what dawned on me, though: People aren't even interested in their own health, why would they be interested in healthy money? Yes, everyone wants to be healthy. But doing what is necessary to live a healthy lifestyle? Not interested. Not in the least. Usually something really really bad has to happen for people to change their ways. And even that doesn't move the needle in some cases, as plenty of drinkers who still drink after their liver gave up, or plenty a smoker who still smokes after being diagnosed with lung cancer can attest to.

Which brings me to bitcoin treasury companies. Are most of them interested in taking the responsibility of holding their own keys? Are they interested in providing real value while staying humble and stacking sats? No, of course not. They are interested in paper gains, not in a full-blown reorientation that leads to a healthier lifestyle. And I mean that literally: if you truly and fully adopt bitcoin, the responsibility that is entailed by that will result in a reorientation, a re-alignment of values, which will—down the line—lead to more long-term thinking, healthier business practices, more honest value generation, and so on.

To me, this is what "capital B" Bitcoin is about. Change. Real change. A ridiculous proposition to the balance sheet brain.

...which brings me to nostr.

A short stroll through the current iteration of the internet should make clear that the platforms that most people spend their time on are incredibly mis-aligned with humanity. The outrage-machine that we've built for ourselves is keeping us like rats in Skinner boxes, hitting the dopamine button with every swipe and every scroll, no matter what. We've built a machine that is parasitic on humanity, instead of synergistic. We are optimizing for engagement, which means that we are maximizing addiction by shoving a mixture of uppers (porn) and downers (rage bait) down our collective throats. The machine is catering to our lowest selves, as opposed to our highest selves. (We could also optimize for the True, the Good, and the Beautiful, you know. Is that too much to ask?)

But who is to blame for all of that? (And is it worth blaming someone in the first place?)

It is clear to me that the whole military-grade industrial advertising complex that profits from running large-scale and nonstop psychological experiments on the whole fucking population of the earth wouldn't be profitable for long if we would all get our act together. But that won't happen, of course. There won't be a magical finger snap that suddenly shakes us awake from our slumber; that stops us from sleepwalking into dystopia. Just like there won't be a magical finger snap that stops us from our bad habits and unhealthy lifestyles.

Adopting a healthy way of living is hard. It means saying no to the constant onslaught of sugary snacks, fast-food around every corner, and social pressures to indulge. It means taking responsibility for your decisions, cultivating discipline, taking care of your body, your psyche, and yes, also your soul.

A wise man once said that "he who has a 'why' can bear almost any 'how'." And that's what most of us are missing: a strong enough "why." Why go through the trouble of living healthy? It's hard! Why hold your own keys, if someone else can do it for you, and there's even the apparent safety of some insurance? Why cultivate a less destructive relationship to the internet, if you can just autoplay & chill, whether it be with Netflix, YouTube, TikTok, PornHub, or something else? Why not write the snarky comment and trigger a whole cohort of people at the click of a button?

Because it's not healthy, that's why.

"Everything's amazing and nobody's happy." That's the state of the world. Always has been. And I'm to blame too, of course. Sitting in the hospital waiting room, writing these lines, bitching and moaning about the internet, this amazing series of tubes that I so love, warts and all.

But yeah, the internet won't heal itself over night. Neither will the economy, nor the rent-seeking zombie companies that don't provide value, nor the underlying fiat system that broke it all in the first place. It will take lots of time, lots of courage, lots of faith, and lots of responsibility.

It will be hard, but it will also be worth it. And it starts with you.

The libertarian who builds a life in the Second Realm, that parallel world of counter-economic activity operating beyond official permission, purchases independence at a specific price: the state that would tax and regulate him will also decline to protect him. Call it a feature rather than a bug, since the state's protection was always a fiction anyway, a justification for extraction rather than a service. But the departure from official society carries real consequences. In the eyes of the First Realm, the Second Realm is outlaw territory inhabited by outlaws, and that is precisely how other outlaws will see it too.

The temptation is to seek security by recreating familiar structures, to establish some authority within the autonomous zone that can enforce order, adjudicate disputes, and repel invaders. The temptation should be resisted. Every historical attempt to institutionalize protection has ended in the protector becoming the next predator. The state itself began as a protection racket, promising security in exchange for tribute, and that transaction, once accepted, only ever expanded in scope. Any security provider operating within the Second Realm faces identical incentives: to expand its mandate, consolidate its position, and eventually claim the monopoly on force that defines statehood. The very act of purchasing safety creates a new and intimate threat.

The practical question, then, is how communities of individualists can defend themselves without creating the conditions for their own subjection. The answer lies in a disposition toward security that treats preparation as the primary goal and actual conflict as a failure to be minimized, rather than in any particular technology or organizational form.

Every competent nightclub operator understands that good bouncers at the door prevent more violence than any number of armed guards inside. The principle scales to any autonomous zone: know who enters, control how they arrive, and maintain awareness of the approaches by which attack might come.

Against the state, the calculus differs fundamentally from defense against ordinary criminals. One does not defeat a modern nation-state through force of arms. The asymmetry is too great, the resources too imbalanced. Those who imagine pitched battles against government forces are entertaining fantasies that will get people killed. Defense against state aggression means delay, deniability, and escape. It means separating evidence from persons at risk, maintaining the ability to relocate operations, and accepting that any fixed installation can eventually be taken. The goal is survival rather than victory, continuity rather than conquest. The Second Realm persists by being too diffuse to crush, too mobile to pin down, and too prepared to surprise.

Against other outlaws, the situation permits more conventional thinking. When a predator calculates whether to attack, they weigh expected gains against expected costs. Security succeeds when it makes that calculation unfavorable. This requires neither overwhelming force nor sophisticated weaponry, only sufficient visible preparation to signal that easier targets exist elsewhere. The elaborate defenses of medieval castles worked not because they could withstand any siege but because besieging them was expensive enough to deter most attempts. The same principle applies to any protected space: make attack costly, deny the possibility of quick victory, ensure that anyone contemplating aggression understands they will pay a price disproportionate to any potential gain.

The deeper problem of defense in individualist communities is coordination. Defense is a numbers game. The size, preparation, and cohesion of forces available determine outcomes more than individual skill or motivation. Effective resistance requires the ability to concentrate strength, to delegate authority in emergencies, and to subordinate personal judgment to collective action when circumstances demand it. For people who have explicitly rejected hierarchical organization, who prize autonomy above nearly every other value, this represents a real philosophical challenge. Individualists must develop, in advance and through careful negotiation, the shared understandings and contingent agreements that allow rapid coordination without permanent subordination. The alternative is being picked off one by one by adversaries who face no such constraints.

Yet even this coordination must carry its own safeguards. Any security provider, even one emerging from within the community, accumulates power through its protective function. The security entrepreneur who successfully defends the autonomous zone gains resources, reputation, and the implicit authority that comes from demonstrated capability. These same assets could be turned against the community if the provider decided to extract rather than protect. The time-tested solution is to ensure that defensive capacity remains distributed, that no single entity possesses enough force to dominate, and that everyone remains willing and able to resist any protector who begins exhibiting predatory tendencies. The vigilance required toward external threats must be matched by vigilance toward those claiming to guard against them.

Call it prudent institutional design rather than paranoia. The question of who watches the watchmen admits no final answer except eternal watchfulness itself. Successful autonomous zones cultivate a culture in which security is everyone's concern rather than a service delegated and forgotten. They maintain distributed capabilities so that the removal of any single node does not collapse the whole. They treat their protectors as service providers subject to competition and replacement rather than as authorities entitled to obedience. Above all, they remember that the goal is liberty, and that survival at the price of subjection to a new master represents no victory at all.

Being prepared, and having adversaries know you are prepared, eliminates most threats before they materialize. The vast majority of security situations in life resolve through deterrence rather than conflict. This is as true for autonomous zones as for nation-states, as true for private clubs as for defended borders. The predator who knows that attack will be costly looks for softer targets. The state that understands it cannot achieve surprise looks for easier prosecutions. The practical work of security consists largely in ensuring that these calculations consistently favor leaving you alone.

The Second Realm will never achieve perfect safety, but neither does the First. The question is not whether risks exist but whether freedom is worth the risks involved in claiming it. For those who find the degradation of the state-dominated world intolerable, who refuse to wait for a revolution that may never come, the answer has already been given. They have chosen to build something worth defending. The work that remains is ensuring that what they build can survive long enough to flourish.

What helped for me:
1) Listen to as many interviews as possible from Jeff Booth (nprofile…w2ua) .
2) Read the books "Beyond Money" from daniella (nprofile…5tq8) (thanks Jeff for the recommendation) & "A Lodging of Wayfaring Men" (thanks Max (nprofile…8p0e) for the recommendation). (There are many other great books and bitcoin writers!!, but these referenced here specifically helped me overcome step 3 and 4)
3) Stop hoping... I spent too long waiting for a Bitcoin price surge to rescue me from my fiat job, so I could finally dedicate myself to freedom tech projects.
4) Start "building" NOW. As I'm not a developer, I just started doing things. My first focus is on proofreading and translations of bitcoin tutorials, courses (with planbnetwork (nprofile…x23h) ) and documentaries. Contributing for sats gave me the greatest satisfaction in recent years, despite working full-time on a rather useless fiat job.
5) Unfollow accounts who focus too much on price, politics, trends, macro, negativity
6) Follow and zap the builders, believers and the doers.

This comes as no surprise to me.

Several people have reached out about this. There are apparently at least 10 URLs that were purchased on 5 separate days over a period of 3.5 years, all appear to have the same owner. Some of them seem intended to interfere with our ability to fundraise or accept donations? I honestly could see this sort of thing as a one-off or as a mean joke if you're having a bad day, but the pattern here comes across as something different. Given how many podcasts and conferences his sponsorships touch it feels like behaving this way towards a FOSS project should be a bigger deal? I can verify Jake’s statement that this is a MUST LISTEN.

I also think this is a great entry point for people who do not understand bitcoin to get their heads around what’s coming and why it’s so important.

As I’ve said for the last year, the hardest days for bitcoiners are ahead. We have not won. The enemy is preparing for an assault on a scale we’ve never seen before.

We will be tested. We will have to be courageous. Bitcoin in self custody will be illegal. We will have to decide if we ill comply or become criminals. Most bitcoiners will turn their bitcoin in to the government. Only a small fraction of us will fight.

The stakes have never been higher. It’s time to build. Bitcoin is important but it’s not the only factor critical to our survival. We must also build skills, self-sustaining communities, farms and communication networks. A decentralized system has an advantage over the centralized one, but it will not be easy.
