i want to make a zine about "week of patching" in addition to a webpage. i want to encourage people to share their patches via the fediverse, who may not yet know what it is. is there a good guide/resource for getting started on mastodon or similar that i could share as a QR code or something? i have seen some things like that a while ago but i thought maybe there are some better and/or more up to date ones that have been created now? also server recommendations?

i have kind of been ignoring this for a while because there is a lot going on but there are about 1000 reasons i don't want to keep hosting my code on github anymore. codeberg seems nice but i kind of want to just make my own forgejo instance. it's mostly personal projects anyway and i've had approximately 2 outside contributions so i'm not that worried about the friction of other ppl PRing to them. that said, does anyone with experience doing this have any advice?

i feel ok using are.na for now because, after i finished inputting my stuff, i ran a script to download everything including the file assets so i have everything backed up locally. if i want to make my own version of an interface, it shouldn't be too hard to migrate the things i've collected into a new system. in the meantime, i can see what i like and find useful about the current platform while making notes about things i wish were different. but i'm also glad that the whole thing doesn't have to wait until i have the time to do that...

anyone remember about a month ago when i asked for help identifying font support for a bunch of weird unicode characters? well, i kind of just finished the project that was for, and instead of using existing unicode characters i ended up actually MAKING MY OWN FONT for the first time!!

well, i can think of many reasons, but it would be hard to really make those points to someone not experienced in *maintaining* code. i mean, i almost think the best way to convince someone would be to let them try it out for a week, maybe get something working, then it breaks and no one knows why... no one knows what any of the code does... the LLM keeps making confident-sounding assertions about why it's not working and outputting plausible-looking code, but it still doesn't fix the problem(s).

i spent a slightly unhealthy amount of time installing python on this extra kobo i don't use anymore and setting up a little "dashboard" display for my kitchen.

it should change to a black background and a different drawing when the sun goes down. will see if it worked in about an hour...

pocket (which i don't use) and glitch (which i used lightly for a recent friend project) both dying on the same day is giving me deja vu to when google reader died. it seems like they both died because they operated on dying models of the modern web — in the case of glitch, unsustainable freemium compute services, and in the case of pocket, letting people manually spend time reading and curating articles instead of trusting algorithms to "recommend" them interesting things (kind of same reason google killed google reader). my takeaway is, these occurrences are annoying but totally predictable. i learned from the google reader thing, and now i self-host linkwarden and miniflux. in the case of glitch, i went for the easy route, and now i have to figure out where to move. just a reminder to myself that, instead of hopping from free services to free services until each one gets acquired and shut down, sometimes it makes more sense to try to invest a bit more effort to create or run something on a different model

fedi, please help me decide something. i need to make a portfolio of web dev projects for job reasons, i'm a bit torn between whether i should add a section for that to my existing personal website, or make a new separate website that's more "professional".

i have a stripe account, which i use to manage subscribers and payments for my Zine Club. but i have all of the email notifications turned off on my account. (ALL OF THEM, i'm very deliberate about this across all platforms.)

so today i get an email from stripe, telling me that Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has been added to the agenda for some kind of dumb conference that Stripe is running.

not only that, but they say that he's going to have a "fireside chat" with the CEO of Stripe to talk about about "leadership in the face of AI."

they are literally bypassing my user preferences to tell me that they are sucking up to a bootlicker. WTF?? it's almost enough to make me try to switch platforms, except that this would be very difficult, as most of the alternative platforms for this type of subscription (patreon, etc) are built on top of stripe anyway.

now i just feel alienated and like a hostage and also somewhat baffled that they thought sending out this announcement in the face of the current political situation was a good idea.

i am starting to do some calisthenics to supplement my yoga practice. it is very helpful because i can work specifically on building the muscles that help me do a low chaturanga (basically the same as a pushup) a lot faster than if i was just doing yoga by itself. i have a pull up bar but i need to find a piece of wood to attach it to my door in my new apartment because it doesn't have a "normal" doorframe (old house...)

i am going to try to make a thing for my irl friends where you send a text and/or photo to a phone number and they get added to the top of a webpage with newest at the top. with maybe timestamps, no other context. the phone number would only be shared with people directly. could be a cozy space for some friends for whom mastodon is too overwhelming. i hope i can get it too work without too much trouble.

ok, so the landline internet does not actually work at my new place, and for reasons i won't go into here i don't think it will be fixed. there are 2 bars of LTE at the window, but the signal varies inside. wondering if anyone has experience with trying out a cellular signal boosting antenna/repeater thingy and if so, how it worked for you? i'm considering putting an antenna somewhere outside and then putting the repeater inside. please boost (no pun intended)
