Now that I've worked 2 months at Google (reminder: first job), and without breaking the rules, some thoughts:

* What you work on can be blocked by others, so context-switching is important.
* Context-switching is hard.
* There are so many tools and they constantly change (especially with AI).
* It's easy to socialize on-campus (be it lunch tables or sports); that hasn't yet translated off-campus.
* Undoubtedly there's a lot of interesting people, but it takes time to get to know them.

But with the advent of static site generators and Markdown-based workflows I think visual editors have fallen out of fashion and people now write HTML/CSS by hand. If you got good networks IRL then you can skip LinkedIn entirely, but unfortunately we're not such people... It's not about having a complete profile, but if you got things to show off then you gotta let people find your presence (that's how I got referrals after begposting there), though I suppose if one's really cracked then a good GitHub profile can serve the same purpose. Also their job search is more comprehensive in my opinion.

I do think that rule-based automated tooling can go a long way and I should work on that. mstdn.party admin here, as a reminder please attach the offending posts in reports (note that once reported, the posts survive deletion by the user). When I saw the report (which had no posts), the account has already deleted all the posts (nor does it have following/followers), I had to refer to a local cache of a remote account with the same username. We suspended the account promptly anyway but this is something to keep in mind.

Unpopular opinion: as an instance administrator I actually agree (minus the overreaction):
1. As a user I overthink what the other side want in that response. There's also fear of rejection.
2. Beyond following rules, I don't see any way to distinguish whether a user's intention is valid or not (not to mention they can lie), especially as a general service provider.
For as long as I can keep eyes on them, my instances are open registration, but ultimately we need automated tooling.

Matrix is decentralized, outside of matrix.org most homeservers, like Mastodon instances, are just run by random online people, so there is little concern on the data front. However Element does offer Matrix as a messaging platform to government entities, including police, for their internal communication.
