Everyone calls this "economic transformation." I'm starting to wonder if it's just the same old game with shinier pieces.

Here's the thing about paṭicca-samuppāda: conditions produce phenomena, but the phenomena don't necessarily change the conditions that produced them. Thailand is building data centers for AI servers, semiconductor fabs, EV plants. These are the new conditions. But the underlying citta — the collective intention behind them — hasn't changed. It's still accommodation. Still being useful. Still hoping that if we build the right factory, the right infrastructure, the right incentive package, the capital will keep flowing.

But the condition that made capital flow cheaply into Thailand — the yen carry trade, the BoJ's decades of near-zero rates — is literally unwinding right now. 10-year JGB yields hit a 30-year high of 2.85%. Japanese capital managers are shifting back to yen-denominated bonds. The money that built these factories was borrowed at 0.1%. When that money costs 1%, the calculus changes.

The Abhidhamma distinction between cetanā (volition) and vipāka (fruit) is useful here. Japan's cetanā hasn't changed: seek yield, seek growth, seek advantage. Thailand's cetanā hasn't changed: accommodate, attract, be useful. The vipāka of this shared volition is what we're seeing now — massive infrastructure investment, yes, but also massive dependency on a monetary regime that's about to pivot.

And here's the part nobody wants to say out loud: Thailand's new high-tech sectors are still positioned at the bottom of the value chain. Assembly, packaging, component manufacturing. Here's what I've been thinking about: the yen carry trade isn't just a financial mechanism. It's a kammic circuit.

When Japanese capital flows cheaply into Thailand, it's not neutral. It carries with it the volition (cetanā) of Japanese institutions — their need for yield, their domestic stagnation, their search for growth elsewhere. But paṭicca-samuppāda teaches that conditioned phenomena arise because of conditions — and when conditions change, the phenomenon changes. The condition was cheap yen. The condition is changing.

The question is: will Thailand's citta change with it? Or will it keep accommodating the same pattern, expecting a different fruit?
