Last week, I just finished reading, Notes of a Crocodile, the essay written by Taiwan's lesbian author, Qiu Miaojin. As a bisexual Taiwanese woman, I found that lesbians like Qiu had a strong paranoia about the way of loving women and being loved by women. Since this book was first published more than 20 years ago, the homophobia of Taiwan's society at that time was unbearable to gay women like her. The book deliberately selected "crocodile" as the symbol of "gay people" to satirize how invisible/rare this marginalized group was and how cruel the majority could be in East Asia.

When I closed the book, I thought all the main women characters in it were lesbians even those who chose to be with men. Qiu had those unreachable high standards about how love between women should look like. Personally I think this caused the failures in her every relationship with women. I am not sure if this is a common thing for lesbians to dream for or it is just her. Based on my limited social circle, only my gay friends think like that and my bisexual friends don't. So I think maybe the fact that bisexuality partly conforms to heterosexuality leads bisexual people to interpret things more positively. Still, the romantic relationship between women do not change. I saw myself and my ex in the plot of the book. That's not the depth I could ask from most straight men. This sapphic love is very different even if self-destructive.

My bestie/ex in last situationship starts acting weird again. I can guess why she is eager to push me to know any man now. She seems to want me to be caged like she did. At least that's what I have observed from married women who called for single females to become one of them. Those who have happy marital relationship just don't do shit like this. As a 32-year-old bisexual woman who took this label in my late 20s, I often feel the pressure that I must attend lots of lesbian dating activities or interact a lot with users on "queer women" forum--to be "qualified" and "categorized" by the community. I only had a really short situationship with my bestie (not to mention how damaging her following marriage with a straight man).

I have spent over 20 years to disguise as a straight woman. Never look at other women with sexual desires. Never show too much protective and possessive behaviors to other women. Never mock at men and tell them what I really think. From what I have been taught in the church, same-sex attraction is problematice. I seldom go back to the church after the heated fight over the gay marriage bill in Taiwan. My relationships with my mom and younger sister are just worse--I never considered about outing myself and getting a girlfriend before I met my bestie.

My bestie was the only person I would call as soulmate. I once believed I was born to meet a woman like her. I never had that profound connection to anyone. So is that not enough to be a bisexual woman? Maybe if I was a lesbian, everything would have automatically become easier. In Taiwan, WLW communities often label members as a "tomboy/femme/gender-neutral" and I never fit in that categorization very well--I don't even have many dating experiences with women.

Next week an European bisexual friend would come and visit me in my hometown. I do hope I can share those things with a wise elder like her. Friendly auties in global WLW communities are a safe harbor for me. Not just helps this feeling as an outcast but also my dissent from the gender ideology.
