Don't remember, not too long. I told the operator my sad story and she knew who to call. The guy brought his wife and dog with him, we went back down to Pescadaro state beach, hooked up the car. The five of us, including our son who was about 18 months, squeezed into the cab, and over the mountain we went to the VW dealer in San Mateo. It was long past dark by the time we were done. That part of the adventure cost me $20.

The only time i did compressions was in an ambulance going quickly on a twisty mountain road with the paramedic handling the ventilation and coaching me. The patient's condition did not improve and he was declared at the ER. It's amazing to me how quickly the medical staff goes from urgently doing stuff to calmly cleaning up once the doctor calls time of death.

We would have air raid drills in junior high in the 60s. One fine day, our teacher said don't bother climbing under the chairs. Between March AFB and Norton on the other side of Box Springs mountain, there was no way any of us would survive. While probably true, that was less comforting than he intended.
