My first company, Opera, was built on word of mouth. The same applies to my 2nd company, Vivaldi Browser (npub19rt…adh9). We have never had the means that Big Tech has. In the case of Vivaldi, we have even avoided investors, to not end up like Opera.

We have also made it harder for our selves. We likely could have generated more funds through adding stuff like Crypto, AI or just plain old data collection in the browser, but we choose not to. We are also not an Ad company like most of our larger competitors. Instead we have added a wealth of features and customization.

Now people are starting to understand that just going with Big Tech may be easy to start with, but ends up not being worth it. In fact we now have governments and companies thinking that they need to move away from Big Tech and quickly.

I am continuing to test different Linux distros. So far I have tested Ubuntu, Kubuntu, OpenSUSE and Zorin during this round of testing.

I have tested on Thinkpad P14S and a Zephyrus G14. Relatively powerful machines.

Thinking about how I would have improved things. That is an automatic for me for most everything.

There is no better feeling than the satisfaction of seeing happy users of Vivaldi. There is a reason why I and the rest of the Vivaldi team continue to work hard on building a better browser for all of you!

It is not always easy. Building a browser across platforms and devices is not trivial to do. Connecting them all together through sync s not trivial either. Making it work well on small and large screens, using different input methods takes a lot of work as well. Having unlimited flexibility is hard as well. This is the reason why others tend not to do it. It is a lot easier to just say that the way you design it is the right way and the user is wrong.

I know there are then things that some of you would like us to do, that we have not done yet. Generally we have it on our list.
Running on a different code base is not on our list, though. It is too much work for too little gain. It is better for us to spend resources on improving the one code base we have. The more resources we have, the more we can do. When you tell your friends about Vivaldi, you help us grow and you help us be able to do more.

32 years ago I started working on my first browser, Opera. I left Opera in 2011, but two years later I co-founded Vivaldi. Thus I have been making browsers now for 32 years, with a short break there between 2011 and 2013.

I have always felt that this work is important and no less today than before as more and more of you see the importance of alternatives to Big Tech.

Vivaldi is a European company with headquarters in Norway, servers in Iceland and team in Norway, Iceland, across Europe, Japan and a couple in the US.

New Vivaldi Browser (npub19rt…adh9) release on mobile. Finally we have 2 level tab stacks on iOS and we are putting significant efforts into desktop mode on Android. I am very excited about that. The idea that you can just connect your phone to a dock with keyboard, screen and mouse and have a fully working computer is great! Not just a mirror, but a full desktop environment. This has been around for a while on Samsung phones through DEX, but is now coming to Android in general and we see this as an interesting challenge to bring a true desktop experience to this environment. Obviously having things like tabs, tab stacks and panels gives us a head start, but we will continue to work on this.

We are always trying to make Vivaldi Browser (npub19rt…adh9) better and our latest release is another example of that. This time our focus was on hiding the UI. Why we do that? Because some of you have been requesting a minimal UI and that is what we have now delivered, but with the UI always close and also fully under your control. Try it out and you will understand! It can be accessed from a button in the status bar or through CTRL F11. Hint : Try associating it with fullscreen (F11), for an even better experience! There is a setting for that, of course.

Another function we added is follow tab. Tie together two tabs side by side. Click a link on the left side and view it on the right side. Great for going through search results without having to go back and forth or viewing images or the like.

I remember a time when I was in Spain with the family, while preparing for a board meeting. I calculated that every update I would get of draft papers for the board meeting would cost me €100. I ended up figuring out a different way to deal with this, but being able to roam is just so much nicer.

In January 2022 I wrote this article on Crypto. The point was to explain why we have taken a stand against it. For me that stand was really taken 10 years earlier, as friends wanted me to become involved. At the time I read what I could find and concluded that this was all a scam. My opinion has not changed. Over the years it has become clearer for most that it is a scam that not only increases risk for the economy as a whole, increases global warming and electricity prices, it is even being used to undermine our democracy.

**Why Vivaldi will never create ThinkCoin**

Some years ago, when cryptocurrencies weren’t talked about as much, we were considering announcing a parody cryptocurrency for April’s Fools. It would be called ThinkCoin, and the joke was that all the value associated with it was in the mind of the user, with no software to back it in the real world.

This was ridiculous, of course, playing on the idea that actual cryptocurrencies have no actual value either. This should tell you that we never thought seriously about entering that space. These days, however, with the incredible hype and attention that cryptocurrencies, and more recently NFTs, are currently getting, we couldn’t even go for such a joke, for fear that it would be taken seriously.

Since the discussion around cryptocurrencies has reached such an extreme, I think it is high time to clarify Vivaldi’s position.##

Cryptocurrency – is it a revolution?Cryptocurrency has been touted by many as a revolution in currency, the future of investment, and a breakthrough technology. But if you look beyond the hype, you’ll find nothing more than a pyramid scheme posing as currency.

It’s basically a digital commodity, though one without government backing or banking system support. Claiming to be the new digital currency of the internet, cryptocurrencies promise decentralization and freedom from governments.

Each cryptocurrency typically follows a certain recipe to ensure that the founders create a lot of wealth, a way to distribute the currency to give it legitimacy, and some story on how it is different from all the others.

But since cryptocurrencies are too volatile to be used as an actual currency, people treat it as a sort of investment scheme. The problem is that to extract actual money from the system you have to find someone willing to buy the tokens you are holding. And this is only likely to happen as long as they believe they will be able to sell them on to someone who’ll pay even more for them. And so on, and so on.

If at any point one stops being able to find people willing to buy those tokens on just the promise of them being worth more in the future, the whole scheme might well come crashing down, with the value of all tokens going to zero. ##

An environmental disaster The energy consumption of cryptocurrency is another major [concern](https://davidgerard.co.uk/blockchain/2018/05/22/bitcoins-stupendous-power-waste-is-green-apparently-bad-excuses-for-proof-of-work/ ). The energy usage of bitcoin alone is staggering, consuming as much electricity as some countries. And this is likely to keep increasing as the technology behind it does not and cannot scale in any reasonable way.

For obvious reasons, that sort of energy consumption isn’t good for the environment as the energy could clearly be spent better somewhere else. This is also true if it’s renewable energy since it could instead be used to displace fossil fuels in other applications.

While so many of us are trying our best to reduce our carbon footprints, it feels counterproductive to indulge in technology that undoes that hard work.

Where we standAt the time of writing (January 2022), there are over 8,000 cryptocurrencies in existence. Compare this to the 180 actual currencies worldwide that can be used as legal tender.

The most baffling part of this cryptocurrency craze is that it’s still unclear if there is any viable use case or a meaningful way to value it. Without this, it is reduced to merely an overcomplicated slot machine for those with money to burn.

Yet, despite all the negatives, there will still be those who opt to participate. And for those who end up owning some crypto tokens that they’ll need to manage, the browser might seem a logical place to keep track of it all. Indeed, some of our competitors have done just that and now provide crypto-wallets in the browser.

Since Vivaldi is all about offering choices and customizability, you might expect us to include this functionality, as well. But in good conscience, we cannot.

The entire crypto fantasy is designed to lure you into a system that is extremely inefficient, consumes vast amounts of energy, uses large amounts of hardware that could better be spent doing something else and will quite often result in the average person losing any money they might put into it.

When you strip away the hype, these virtual currencies have very real repercussions for people, society, and the environment. By creating our own cryptocurrency or supporting cryptocurrency-related features in the browser, we would be helping our users to participate in what is at best a gamble and at worst a scam. It would be unethical, plain and simple.

We refuse to dress these scams up as opportunities. Instead, we encourage you to treat them with the skepticism they deserve. This may be a game for some curious crypto-investors and wealthy speculators, but for those unlucky enough to get caught out by the pyramid scheme, it could be devastating.

It’s just not worth it.

Interesting article. I guess the problem is about trying to fix the symptoms instead of the actual problem. A big issue is that the algorithms in use by Big Tech social media companies tends to favor content like this. If not, we would all just stop following people that share stuff like this. Instead it is forced on us like a Copilot.

The only answer is to ban user profiling and use of said profiling for ad and content selection.

This is great news.

In Iceland and Norway we have been fortunate enough to have plenty of hydro power, so use of oil has been mostly related to cars and ships. Both countries have taking large steps towards EVs, with sales of EVs at 95% in Norway at this time.

The goal should be to be as independent from oil as we can be.

- Customizable dashboard

Not everyone uses everything we make, but that is also the point. The fact that we listen to special requests is IMHO a feature and not a bug. We value power users as well.

Big Tech continues to push for no AI regulation and it is having an impact. They want us to forget the damage done by the lack of regulation of user profiling. Instead they argue that regulating user profiling and AI would be a disaster. Clearly they are having some success with this strategy.

Hopefully regulators will fight back, but in the meantime, you have a choice when it comes to OS and browsers. Choose the one that does not force AI on you.

New Vivaldi Browser (npub19rt…adh9) update out now on Android and iOS. The iOS version has some really nice, new features, such as reader mode and custom search engines. Those were in high demand, so happy they are there.

As some of you know, I have moved over to Linux. I have tried different distributions, but using Ubuntu at this time. I have found one issue. When I click links in other apps and they open in Vivaldi, there is a notification that the page is ready, instead of just taking me to the page. Seems to be a generic issue and I have looked and found that there are extensions to get rid of this, but IMHO this should rather be a setting and I would have thought that most users would like for things just to be opened. Any reason why it is done this way? It adds a lot of extra steps that should not be needed.

I have finally moved over to Linux as my primary platform. In many ways it is like coming home, as I loved working on UNIX machines in the past. Of course, I have been using Linux as a secondary OS for a long time, but I finally made the switch. Microsoft cancelling Windows 10 and the direction Windows 11 is going was just too much for me.

Ruarí Ødegaard (npub1zc4…ywf4) helped the transition, by making it easy for me to work with multiple concurrent Vivaldi Browser (npub19rt…adh9) installs.
That is a must for me as I test a lot of builds at the same time.

Results of my little survey. Why is Linux growing?

19% believe it is because of sunsetting of OS versions. Microsoft is forcing Windows 11 on people and a lot of people are not happy with that and some are just not able to run it. So with a choice of replacing the HW or the OS, plenty of people choose the OS.

20% believe it is because people are just discovering how good Linux truly is.

41% believe it is a combination.

21% think it is something else, with some mentioning SteamOS as a reason.

Whatever the reason, more and more people are seeing Linux as a great choice, which is only good news to me.

I also do not think that Google is a reliable source for information and even less with more AI use. The most reliable source of information may depend on your country. In the Nordics, I would trust the government and government media, but I also understand that that can be an unreliable source in many countries.

Then you are left with the more mainstream media, again depending on your country.

What clearly does not work is algorithmic content selection. I think we should know that by now. This is one of the reason why we include an RSS reader in Vivaldi.

So why is Microsoft insisting on pushing out a feature it is very clear users just do not want? What is the point of it? It just does not make any sense. Recall makes no sense. It is one of rather many functions that Microsoft wants to force people into using.

Personally I also do not want Copilot on my computer and the idea that there can be a key on my keyboard that I can press that will enable by mistake it is not what I would think most people want.

I believe that there should be a very clear line between what is on your computer and what is in the cloud. Forcing people to log into a Microsoft online account to use their computer is crazy. Having people mistakenly enabling OneDrive is another disaster.

I guess this is all a great opportunity for Linux.

Unlike most others, we have made certain choices at Vivaldi that IMHO are important in this time and age. We believe the choices were important when we made them, but even more so today.

Our servers are in Iceland and they are our servers and not some cloud servers. We use them for all Vivaldi services, including things like Sync, Blogs, Forums and Vivaldi Social.

Electricity in Iceland is green. Most all of the power in use is hydro, with a little bit of geo thermal.

We do make use of CDNs for speed, etc., of course.

There are options. Choosing those options will require you to learn something new, but that is a small cost to pay to get away from Big Tech, IMHO

Here are my suggestions. Feel free to add your own:

1. Browser : Vivaldi. That one is a given for me, obviously.

2. Mail client : Vivaldi. You may wonder why you need a mail client, but besides the technical benefits, it makes it a lot easier to move between mail services or even use more than one.

3. Mail service : Fastmail. They have been around for a long time.

4. Office software : Libre Office.

5. Video conference : Whereby.

6. Desktop OS : Linux.

7. Social : Mastodon and the Fediverse in general.

Welcome to Vivaldi Social, Mastodon and the Fediverse.

If you are coming from a place like X, Facebook or TikTok, this place is different. The good thing is that you only see things in your feed from people you follow. The content is shown reverse chronological.

This means that you will likely see a lot less misinformation, hate speech and AI crap.

But if you do not follow anyone, your feed will feel empty. So go ahead and find people and organizations that you like and follow them. Make things interesting. There is a lot of interesting people out there.

The search is great for finding content and who to follow. Hashtags are useful when searching as well.

Roughly 18 months ago I had a small survey. I asked whether you would change a content algorithm you made if you found out it made people hate each other. Most of you said yes.

Since then things have sadly not improved. I have argued that we need to ban user profiling. That the cost outweigh any benefits. I really do not think there is any other way.

Facebook did not have an over-censorship problem. Facebook main problem was that its algorithms promote hate speech and disinformation, lately with the addition of inauthentic content. Fighting that through fact-checking is always going to be an uphill battle.

This is the reason I believe that content algorithms have no place in social media and that user profiling should be banned. Spreading misinformation and hate speech is a lot harder without the amplification algorithms.

The Fediverse is unique.

My survey asked what your favorite search engine is.

51% said DuckDuckGo, 12% Startpage, 9% Ecosia and 4% Qwant. Only 6% said Google and 1% Bing. 17% said they preferred another search engine, with many mentioning Kagi and Mojeek.

This is quite different from what the market share out there is, which shows how unique you all are here in the Fediverse. You make your own choices and do not follow everyone else. Be proud.

A core part of every Crypto scam is the story. Quite often it is an elaborate one. It all started with the Bitcoin story, but others, such as DOGE, have their own stories. Quite often people will defend these stories as being true. All the other Crypto currencies and NFTs are a scam, but not this one. Some will just point at high valuations as indicators that it is not a scam, but rather it is just indicators of rather successful scams.

Whatever the story is, the results are the same. The damage done is not small. The idea that Crypto now uses more energy than many countries, when we should be conserving energy, is crazy.

We all have a choice when it comes to Crypto. I decided years ago not to get involved. If I had gotten involved, I would have made a bundle, but I would have been part of the problem and I did not want to do that.

Lets stay away from any products and services that include Crypto. Lets not support this "industry" in any way.

iOS 18.2 is out!

As part of the release, you should be seeing a choice screen in Europe. I hope you will be making Vivaldi your default browser from now on, if it is not already!

The way Apple have implemented this, you will only see the choice screen when starting Safari and only when Safari is the default.

I hope the rest of the world will be given the same choice soon.

In Vivaldi Browser (npub19rt…adh9), we provide a set of search engine choices. It differs a bit from country to country, but generally we have a nice set of search engines to choose from.

I would advice that you select one of the smaller search engines. They are generally better when it comes to privacy and you are supporting an alternative to Big Tech, although most of them get their search feeds from either Google or Microsoft at this time. That also means that switching from Google or Bing will allow you to get similar search results, while stepping away from Big Tech, so the switching cost should be lower.

The browser ballot is not there on Windows anymore. It was there years ago in Europe.

There was a time where you could install a browser and the browser would ask you if it should be set as default. If you said yes, it would be default. No further steps were needed. It could also be placed in the dock easily, for easy access.

Microsoft has gradually made all of those steps harder... except for them selves. They are set as default when you get the computer and many of us have experienced a Windows update that more or less without asking makes Edge default again.

When I talk about the importance of going all in on the Fediverse, I speak based on experience.

At Opera we built a massive user community. When I quit, we had something like 35 million registered users and 35 million monthly visitors.

The new Opera management did not see the value of that. They believed it was cheaper and better to just use Facebook and that investing in your own community was a waste of money. So they closed down MyOpera and built a following on Facebook and Twitter instead. Then they got caught by the bait and switch when Facebook changed and you would no longer reach your audience, without paying. Later on Twitter changed as well.

This is important to explain to companies and institutions as they go shopping for social media sites to invest in. The best investment is clearly in your own site, being part of the Fediverse. It is not even all that expensive to do. It may take longer to build, but at least it is your own.

Not saying you cannot build a following on those other sites, but your long term strategy should be the Fediverse with your own server.

We try to lead the way here and thus we build Vivaldi Social. Not just for our selves, but to make a point and support the Fediverse.

Did you know that if you download Vivaldi and sign into Vivaldi, you can use the same login to log into Vivaldi Social and thus Mastodon?

The Vivaldi login is used for things like sync, but also the forum and blogging service. Sync has an extra encryption password.

What this means is that for anyone using Vivaldi, getting into Mastodon is really, really easy.
