Semen belonging to Van A. was found on the vest the teenager was wearing that night.

B. claimed he was "dead drunk" and could not remember the exact details, but stated he could "do the math" given the DNA evidence. Van A. gave a highly contested explanation for his DNA, claiming that after kissing the girl, he sat in the driver's seat and fell asleep. He claimed he woke up with a morning erection, masturbated, and that his semen flew over his shoulder onto her vest. One of the judges openly noted during the trial that this explanation contradicted Van A.'s initial police interrogations, where he admitted to suggesting a threesome. The victim read an emotional statement directly to the court, expressing extreme powerlessness caused by fear and alcohol. She stated: "The fear I felt was so massive, it felt like my heart dropped to my stomach... I don’t understand how the suspects can claim that I wanted this. I didn't even react." She testified that she continues to suffer from severe emotional numbness and emptiness. In its ruling, the court said it found the girl’s testimony reliable, but ruled that sexual abuse could not be legally proven. This bill would criminalize practices intended to persuade someone to have, not have, believe they have, or believe they do not have, a particular sexual orientation or transgender identity. But violence against the person is already a criminal offense, and there is no evidence that so-called conversion therapy is widespread.

As ever, the devil is in the detail. This would be one of the first times “transgender identity” has been explicitly written into law. The bill defines it as being transsexual, undergoing or proposing to undergo a process of gender reassignment, or identifying as “neither male nor female” or “not solely male or female”. This leaves the very term up for varied interpretation. The greatest danger posed by this bill is not that it will fill the prisons with therapists, parents and GPs. It is that it will make them afraid. Faced with nebulous concepts such as “psychological pressure”, “serious alarm” and “transgender identity”, sensible professionals may conclude that affirmation is safer than inquiry. The result will not be better care but less of it. Bad laws are often passed with good intentions. The problem is that once vague concepts are written into statute, they cease to belong to the politicians who drafted them. They belong to all of us, including grievance dwelling and perpetually offended activists.

SNP-led Glasgow City Council missed 25 chances to save kids from a vile Glasgow grooming gang - as the man charged with reviewing the case admitted it could happen again. The "Beastie House" was one of the worst examples of child abuse ever reported in Scotland. Two women and five men were all convicted of gang raping a child and abusing other children in a drugs den in Glasgow, where heroin and crack cocaine were used. They were given sentences of between eight and 20 years in jail before they can apply for parole. Social work and other authorities were in contact with the children involved in the case but failed to act for 12 years. They took the word of the abusers over the terrified kids, and even branded one of the kids "nasty" and "streetwise". They presented as filthy and suffering horrendous dental problems. One child was described in a learning review published on Wednesday as trying to stop a school nurse leaving their residence and on another occasion banging on a window begging a health visitor not to leave. The independent report found these incidents were rationalised as “challenging” behaviour rather than recognised as indicators of distress. Throughout a course of years, the children were described as being dirty, hungry and as suffering from untreated medical issues, including reports from within the community, their school and social workers.

The learning review noted a “pungent smell” coming from some of the children at times, including a smell of urine from one, noted from a local community group. Despite these repeated warnings, the children were not taken away from the perpetrators until 2019. Social workers were presented with a multitude of instances of harm and risk but repeatedly refused to put children on the child protection register, allowing abuse to go on. The children were known to run feral and begged food from neighbours, yet they remained within reach of the inhuman abusers who were allowing others to do the same. The report states: “In this case 25 risk factors were identified in total but nor prioritised or evaluated. The protective factors identified were based on future actions agreed .. rather than past evidence of sustained improvements.“ Social services workers also failed to act in the face of “absolutely appalling” behaviour witnessed from one adult to an abused child.

⚠️A former GP who sexually abused "significantly vulnerable" female patients has now been struck off the medical register.

Mohan Babu was jailed for 42 months in 2024 after being convicted of exposing himself and sexually assaulting three women while working as a locum GP in Havant, Hampshire.

One victim was a cancer patient whose brother said Babu "desecrated her final months." Another said the abuse "ruined my life." The tribunal said his behaviour was: "predatory, repeated, persistent and an abuse of his professional position."

I was in town today for the audiology clinic and on the bus on the way back into centre there was a lady with two small children, the girl I would say was about 2, in pushchair, and the the boy around 4. Going by her looks I'd say granny rather than mother, as in older but not old, and she chatted to them all the time, pointing things out, talking about the bus numbers, what the stop bell was, the little boy was very verbal and clear of speech, this has become very unusual, sadly.

We reviewed the equality policies of schools in Bristol, and found that 40 out of 117 had fundamentally flawed policies. The nine Equality Act Protected Characteristics are: Age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation. A lot of schools have misrepresented the protected characteristics, by replacing sex with “sexual identity” or “gender” for example. We continued this research throughout Devon and Cornwall. In Devon, 73% of schools had equally flawed policies, and in Cornwall it was 61% of schools. Of 97 Church of England Schools in Devon, we found only 24 had suitable policies. This means over 75% of Church of England schools had fundamentally problematic policies. We are in discussions with the Church regarding this and their trans activist policy “Valuing All God’s Children”.

Our research was covered by the Telegraph in three articles: Schools defy ministers to let children change gender behind their parents’ backs; I found out my daughter had changed gender, when teachers called her ‘he’ at parents’ evening; and Denying pupils can change sex may be breaking law, teachers warned. The claim that slogans are innocent has always been a flattering one because it relieves us of the duty to attend to what is being said. The people have spoken, at least to the pollsters. Scotland is to be governed by another “coalition of chaos”, as the last SNP-Green coalition became known before it extinguished itself in ignominy in April 2024.

And yes, I know that the people do not really speak until Thursday in “the only poll that matters”. But it would be naive to expect anything other than another thumping SNP victory — a loveless landslide — albeit with John Swinney still requiring the support of the Scottish Greens to ensure stable government. The latest Sunday Times/Norstat poll tells its own story. The Curtice projection is that the SNP will return 57 MSPs, Reform 19, Labour and the Tories 16 each, Scottish Greens 11, Liberal Democrats 10.

Maybe this underestimates the SNP result by an MSP or two. Maybe not. But the overall picture is clear enough. There has been little change in the relative positions of the parties since the start of the year, though Russell Findlay’s Scottish Conservatives are doing better in this poll than others. So coalition it is, unless Swinney chooses to live dangerously and run a minority administration like Alex Salmond in 2007. But these are fractious times, and Swinney is no Salmond. It need not be a formal coalition, of course. It may not even be another Bute House agreement. A coalition is not necessary even to further the cause of independence, since the Greens are certain to support Swinney’s promised “day one” referendum bill. Could anyone forget former Green minister Patrick Harvie’s epic heat in buildings strategy, under which Scots were supposed to scrap a million gas boilers by 2030 at a cost of £33 billion (in 2021 money)? Scotland’s hard-pressed homeowners were supposed to install costly heat pumps, though not, curiously, Harvie’s own flat in Glasgow where he remained cooking on gas.

The last coalition even tried to abolish womanhood by allowing any man to become legally female simply by making a declaration under so-called self-ID. The Green “red line” in the Bute House agreement struck with Nicola Sturgeon in 2021 was not the environment, not wealth taxes, but the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill. And so it looks like Swinney and Greer running Scotland for the next five years. Only a ballot box miracle on Thursday can prevent Scotland suffering Nightmare on Holyrood, Part Deux.

Britain is today, and the kind of culture in which its children are growing up. Britain’s culture-forming institutions are no longer run by paternalistic conservatives, working to instil solid moral virtues in kids when they are not under their parents’ auspices. Instead, those institutions that are most important in forming Britain’s next generation are almost universally captured by ideologues with deeply held anti-conservative views, often just as extreme as anything that might be found online. When kids are at school, visiting museums, watching films or television, or getting a cultural education by any other mainstream means, the likelihood is that the worldview presented to them is uniformly of an anti-conservative disposition, and not of the sort that Cates believes kids would revert to if only they were yanked off of social media. In fact, the effect of introducing a social media ban would likely have the opposite effect on changing the views of young people in the way that Cates intends. Within this broader anti-conservative cultural hegemony, social media is one of the last refuges where kids might be exposed to ideological alternatives. For those like myself, whose adolescence was already dominated by social media, it was one of the few places that offered a reprieve from the obnoxious Wokeism otherwise forced upon us at every turn in everyday life. If cut off from social media, then all kids would have been able to see was that nakedly ahistorical propaganda, and not its subsequent debunking and ridicule that spread across social media platforms. A ban would allow our current cultural gatekeepers near-uncontested power in shaping the minds of the young, and conservatives must remember that today that means giving power over the minds of young people to the political enemy. If Cates wants to ensure that Britain transmits a virtuous culture to its next generation, then that battle ought to take place in the real world. A cave hidden beneath an 11th Century castle in Pembrokeshire is a "truly remarkable site" which could rewrite Britain's prehistory, researchers say.

Small digs of the cave under Pembroke Castle, known as Wogan Cavern, have so far uncovered "extremely rare" evidence of early humans and animals - including the bones of a hippopotamus which roamed Wales 120,000 years ago.

The University of Aberdeen will now lead a larger five-year exploration of the site, which archaeologists hope could reveal "a great deal about our early prehistoric forebears".

Covering the so-called Arab Spring protests in 2011, she was separated from her camera crew, swarmed by a gang of men who tore her clothes off, and violently raped her with “sticks, flag poles, hands — at a certain point I lost track,” for at least twenty minutes. In Cologne, 661 women “reported being victims of sexual attacks that night.” One of the major claims of Hirsi Ali’s book is that there’s a more-than-anecdotal relationship between a rise in sexual violence against women in Europe and the influx of immigrants from Muslim-majority countries, particularly since the mid-2010s.

Those who failed to take action to try to prevent the Southport attacks will be named unless suitable disciplinary measures are taken, the legal representative for the three murdered girls' families has said.
