On the way back to camp I slipped while crossing a steep slope. I was too lazy to put my micro spikes on. It was scary how quickly I was sliding very fast down the mountain. Jamming my left elbow and hand into the soft snow slowed me enough to grab a small tree poking out. I don’t think death was imminent but I could have gotten hurt. Thankfully no injuries but granite boulders and trees were not too much further below where I stopped. Lessons were learned this time for sure.

Apparently the Sentinel-2 satellite is blind to the snow in this mountain range and I didn’t learn my lesson from two years ago. I almost turned around when I saw Horton Pass because I didn’t think I could climb it without an ice axe. Once I got much closer it looked doable with spikes and was not too bad. Glissading back down was fun though.

Enjoying the alpine meadows of Jefferson Park and the view of Mount Jefferson. Attempted an old route up to Bear Point but an essential trail no longer exists so I had to turn around. It’s a little windy but I found a site that is decently sheltered. I’m at a secret location with a tiny bit of internet. Time to head back to camp for a nap.

I’m at the PCT trailhead at Santiam Pass and there is zero snow. I think I’m going to drive to a trailhead in the mountains on the northern side of the Jefferson Wilderness. A place I’ve never been to before. It’s lower elevation than here so should be fine. And the freezing temps in the morning should keep any ticks at bay. Still traumatized from that.

The thought of paying $1500 or so on a 100K service for my Honda Pilot has sent me on a mission to learn how to be an auto mechanic. Sure I may spend $500 on tools plus parts but the tools can be used again. I think I can do it with the right equipment. Need to replace timing belt, drive belt, spark plugs, water pump, flush the radiator and refill with blue Honda fluid, and inspect and replace various other pulleys and parts.

Enjoying the view of Mount Washington from the summit of Black Butte again. I wasn’t expecting another clear weekend but I used it as an excuse to take my older vehicle, a 2012 Honda Pilot, on a long drive to exercise the engine. We haven’t been driving it much over the last few months. Tomorrow morning, I hope to explore a new area around here. It’s very cold this weekend by Oregon standards, currently 22F/-6C in the sun at 10 AM. It snowed on the way down from Santiam Pass last night.

I’ve already been to the Mountain Hardware (Columbia) Employee Store this morning and I’m currently waiting outside the Nike Company Store. A lot more people here waiting for it to open. Doubt I will buy much here but I wanted to take a look. The Columbia store is pretty great. My third time in the last couple months. I completed the first year of my adult life that I’ve been completely sober, and I couldn’t be happier. And tomorrow marks 10 years since I stopped drinking. I guess I’ve finally grown up.

A year ago I gave up the green when I needed to look for a new job. It’s legal in Oregon but there’s always a chance of a drug test even though that hasn’t happened to me in 25 years. I expected to start again but never felt like I wanted to.

If you feel like you can’t be happy sober, know it’s possible.

Made it back to my vehicle after a 21 mile cherry bomb loop. This is Red Butte at the end of Mowich Lake. A rough line in the thin ice looks like it is reflecting the mountain. No snow around but there was tons of frost and ice on the trail.

I did really enjoy the desert but I felt a strong urge to get back into the mountains. I thought about hiking Black Butte from the lower trailhead but didn’t want my first time to be in the clouds. Decided to hike Marion Mountain and Marion Lake. It started snowing about 30 minutes into my hike this morning. By the time I made it to the summit, the mountain was completely white. It was so serene to be alone in the forest when it’s snowing. The skies cleared a bit towards the end, which was nice.

I’m currently off trail in the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa Mountains. A year ago I saw a goat trail heading down into this basin and thought, “I wonder what’s down there?” Time to find out. I completed my goal of filling in some missing gaps on the PCT this season. The completed section is 327 miles, from Middle Sister in Central Oregon to White Pass near Packwood, Washington. Despite my small section from Santiam Pass to South Cinder Peak last weekend being mostly burnt, I had an amazing time! Incredible views of Three Fingered Jack and Black Butte. Plus my first time seeing mountain goats in the Oregon Cascades. I was even able to get out Sunday morning before the rain started.

After a couple uncomfortable nights trying to sleep in the back of my CRV I decided to buy a sleeping platform. It’s called a Hele Box from Hele Outdoors. Haven’t used it yet but seems well made and should work good. Can be taken apart and put together easily.

Also got a spare tire from Modern Spare since the hybrid battery takes up that space. Not driving deep into the mountains without a real spare tire. So far loving the CRV, and still figuring out all the modern features.

Explored the southern half of the Goat Rocks Wilderness, which is probably the crown jewel of the Pacific Crest Trail in the northwest. The first part of my section from Potato Hill to Knife’s Edge was mostly forest but when it climbs into the alpine, it was breathtaking. The wilderness was full of thru hikers, day hikers, and weekend warriors. And I understand why, I’m going to have to spend more time exploring all the other trails someday.

While hiking on the Wonderland Trail in Rainier National Park, my thoughts were filled with amazement about how easy the hiking was. Of course this was only because I had hiked the Alpine Lakes High Route the weekend prior. The cool temperatures helped as well but the trail is just so beautifully maintained while rugged at the same time. I was expecting clouds after a rare August atmospheric river rolled through but secretly hoped for some sun. Perfect excuse to visit the area again next year.

One of my goals this summer is to fill in a few missing gaps on the Pacific Crest Trail. I hiked a six mile section north of Olallie Lake in Oregon and continued to Jefferson Park for a quick overnight at Russell Lake. Such a beautiful place on the north side of Mount Jefferson. I’m still getting permits when required but there appears to be no one checking them anymore. Saw several PCT northbound hikers in this section. I even enjoyed the burn areas, still pockets of trees and meadows.

On Saturday, I hiked the Seven Lakes Basin loop in Olympic National Park. Still a lot of snow in the main basin but the loop only had a few sections with sketchy snow crossings. I enjoyed the beautiful alpine lakes, lush green rainforest, and rushing falls. Probably the perfect place to spend a long weekend. Next time I would love to do the loop slowly over a few days and really enjoy it.

I was excited to score permits for Olympic National Park for the holiday weekend. The ranger accurately described the difficulty and steepness of the trail leading up to Hoh Lake, but didn’t quite mention that the trail has been effectively abandoned. But my fault for looking on the map at a trail that heads straight up to the High Divide area and thinking that sounded fun. Camping alone at the lake was majestic. A small black bear chased a small deer out of the forest at one point, it got away!

Spent three days last weekend hiking in the western side of the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness near Mount Hood. My goal was to traverse the wilderness from the Douglas Trailhead and camp at Plaza Lake. I wasn’t sure if all of the trails would still exist. They did but I bushwhacked through pollen-covered rhododendron for a couple miles in the middle. Not a single person came down to the lake while I camped there two nights. And no burn zones around. Enjoyed this area quite a bit.

There’s a lot to like about the hike to Old Baldy even though there is no view up top. Beautiful forest and a couple views on the way. No people. Recently maintained trail. The road to the main trailhead is notoriously difficult but there is access from a paved road not far in. I backpacked into the area so not sure about either. I walked down part of the road last year and I think that legend holds up. I would love to camp in this meadow.

Hanging out with Brian and Tyson was incredibly fun. I’m so happy we all made it to the top. I was so done with the melting snow and high temps by the time we made it back down. Amazingly, a scary descent off a steep ridge picked my spirits right back up. I feel so ecstatic about my ice ax, what an incredible tool.

I had an amazing and life-changing day with Tyson, Chicken Rancher 🐓 (npub1dr3…mqw6) and Brian Davis (npub1rfx…d8lu) climbing Mount Adams on Sunday. Everything about the trip was an exciting challenge from the treacherous road to the endless ascent and the 2,000 FT almost continuous glissade. I really didn’t think we would make it with the temperatures in the valley below rising close to 100 F but the snow was mostly firm until we reached the summit.

I attempted another summit of Mount Saint Helens yesterday but turned around at the weather station due to dangerous winds. I couldn’t stand without being blown over and I didn’t see anyone climbing past that point so it seemed like the smartest thing to do. Still had a great day. A lot less snow than last month. Explored part of the Loowit Trail, June Lake, and the Sasquatch Trail. I was substantially more alert on the last trail with only bear prints, elk tracks, and me. Hopefully bear prints.

I’ve been using a Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 since I started backpacking again. Love it and on my second one. Thought about Copper Spur but ultimately decided to stay with what I’m used to. I know people love them but I personally couldn’t deal with a single-wall tent. I love almost never dealing with condensation.

I was hoping that my perspective had changed in the last couple years after many incredible hikes including standing on the rim of Mount Saint Helens six days ago with an amazing descent of legitimately using my ice ax to self arrest and glissading through snow shutes where I had no idea what would happen around the next corner. Well, I wasn’t scared at all during the section that previously terrified me on several occasions. For those familiar, it’s the section right after the rope.

On Thursday I hiked Augspurger and Dog Mountains for the first time. I honestly had no idea these were both very steep trails, which I enjoyed immensely. Had a snack while admiring views of Saint Helens and Adams on the backside of Augspurger, where the trail abruptly disappears. Definitely going to defy the sign that says no camping due to Big Foot someday. It was a bit early for peak wildflower season but there were some pretty flowers around. Will have to go back.

I arrived at my campsite at Dry Creek Falls after 9 p.m. last night. I could hear that the falls were certainly not dry. Had to use earplugs for the first time in over a year. What a beautiful sight to wake up to this morning.

This was my footpath two weeks ago on the Pacific Crest Trail. I was a little traumatized after. There were much more exposed sections. I had and used micro spikes but the snow was so frozen and steep I had little traction. Pretty much held onto every tree and branch along the way.

I was looking at this mountain yesterday on the map and thought, “I wonder if I can summit this?” After six hours of hiking this morning I can finally see the approach. I’m in the Columbia River Gorge. Which mountain is this? I started at sea level to get this far. You have until I reach the summit to guess!

This is what I have. Traction seems good, I’ve gone up and down steep slopes. I’m heading up to a sno-park in the Cascades in the morning and will most likely be using them for a 6,000 foot mountain. Hopefully I can wear them immediately versus having to carry them for a while.

I'm toying with the idea of starting an outdoor blog with ActivityPub integration. Want a logo but I am definitely not a designer and currently don't have a job.
