A percent of profits (always, not just these four days) go towards the support of indie bookstores, so not a bad place to buy. They’re also running 15% off select titles for Pride month.
#books

https://bookshop.org

Just found out I wasted 3 weeks of work, a significant amount of solvent and other reagents because **the commercial starting material is not what the bottle says it is** to add insult to injury what is in the bottle isn't even clean, there is at least one other thing in there.

Hilariously (not really) the only reason I determined this was because I'm making something from the literature and none of my spectra were matching close enough. Went back to the start to check and remade the first step, it produced the same wrong thing. Tried some other conditions, same deal. Finally took an NMR of the starting material today.

#ChemiVerse #Chemistry

When you go to get something out of the cabinet (which turned out not to be there anyway) and discover something else is A Problem.

This was the boron tribromide with the "use in three months of pack date" that I was shipped in July of last year. I haven't touched it since maybe late September, at which point it looked pretty normal. Also this cake is going to be crazy sweet even with reducing the sugar and I'm sort of getting annoyed about how much it's going to cost for something I'm probably going to have to give away most of).

#EBTSC

I really, really like pineapple so I wanted to emphasize that in the topping. I strongly dislike maraschino cherries and opted for using canned tart cherries in water, though they are kind of weird looking (delicious though). In the past I've used fancy jarred morello cherries in syrup, but I've been avoiding buying stuff like fruit in syrup for the past few years due to extra sugar (no I see no conflict in reducing/caramelizing pineapple juice, I contain multitudes)

#EBTSC

Heads up for chem people looking for free stuff: I asked Macherey-Nagel for a sample of their two color TLC plates (they fluoresce in 254 & 3something nm, sounds cool!) by sending a comment in to their "you have questions about this product" form and someone got back to me and said they would ship me a box of them. Usually you get 1-3 plates for samples (a box usually has 20 if we're talking full sized plates) so I was skeptical, but I just saw the tracking information and it says 4 kg, which is about what a full box weighs...

If they make anything you'd like to try worth asking for samples I guess?

#Chemistry #ChemiVerse

If you put up a sign on a bulletin board that says "I will take your large chemical buckets" you might get a decent number, but the size/shape might be a bit more variable (a lot of them are a bit shorter and wider than the standard 5 gallon size). The stuff that comes in them is generally pretty innocuous even if there is some residue around (sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, etc, easy to rinse out with water and not a problem to go down the drain).

Trying to decide if it's worth getting on a chair to change the cabling to go from the directv box to the TV (rather than from my computer) so that I can watch the first Pens playoff game. I could illegally stream from the computer, but those can be glitchy and weird. But my arms hurt from bike seat post mess last night (on top of pushing the 120 kg of water across campus on Thursday, I maybe need to start doing some upper body work outs...).

Emailed in advance so I knew they wouldn't have gluten free bread. Special ordered from a local baker by my house a loaf of gluten free sourdough and carried it around in my bag all through the tour to surprise my mom at the end so she could join everyone else in having a snack.

It's not about putting money into a good gift, it's about thinking about the person and what would make them happy. I know it's harder to do than say, but this was a pretty easy thing and she was thrilled when I gave it to her because it meant I planned ahead for her needs. Didn't hurt that this particular gluten free baker is amazing and a lot of her stuff stands up to regular baked goods.

Probably with stirring rather than spinning (a rotary evaporator rotates the flask to spin it) because that's easier on large scale and less things can go wrong. You just couldn't do it at a reasonable price with my sort of equipment, batch size limitations.

There are larger preparation scale rotovaps (that cost proportionally more, I don't even want to know what the list price is) that are meant for liters at a time. Mine (at work) can technically do that, but the collection flasks available are typically 1 L (which means 500 mL collected at max). You can buy larger, but it starts putting a strain on the the joints and stuff that make you want to move to equipment designed for larger volumes. Also you'd want a larger cooling coil or cold finger, etc.

Peeling takes forever, even if all you do is get it wet and scrub off the skin. But if you're going to simmer it in a curry you won't even notice the skin. Not certain that translates to stir fry, but it probably does? Just giving it a rinse to remove the dirt and then chopping it up take so much less time.

Currently have a large (for one person) pot of fake Indian food simmering on the stove. Unfortunately with only one large pot I can't make enough rice until it finishes, so it might not be for dinner tonight.

fake as in: take two packages of tasty bite madras lentils and dump over 750 g of frozen veggies (I would usually just use a dry bean mix, but grocery outlet has frozen veggies in a minestrone combination right now, which is much better than typical combinations) that were sautéed with fresh garlic and ginger. Add a can of tomato paste (this makes it sweeter than I'd prefer, but ehh...) and whatever random spices I grab out of the cupboard, with a focus on chili of various types and curry powder. This is nodding in the vague direction of India and not real Indian food, but it lasts all week in the fridge and heats up well over rice fast in the microwave for minimal work.

Current conundrum: grocery outlet had a giant (44 slices) pack of cheese on sale a few weeks ago so I got one. And now I'm afraid to open it since I don't think I can use it up before it goes bad, but freezing cheese never seems to work out well. Particularly since I'd like to eat one slice of this (cheddar) with one slices of something else on my egg and cheese sandwiches, which is going to slow down consumption even further.

Also: lack of motivation due to lack of sleep last night. *sighs heavily*

Hopefully the building will still be open when they are done so I can retrieve them tonight, since with the disaster that is the automated work station there I wouldn't assume I'd get them all back if I waited until Monday. And I lost a tube a couple of weeks ago and don't plan to lose another any time soon.

I didn't think of it, but also with 7 samples that means sitting there and manually changing them and telling the instrument to lock and shim on each. And I don't know if that instrument has been shimmed recently so I don't know how the spectra would look. Also not sure if anyone is still using the signup calendar for it, so going over would be a shot in the dark that it was available anyway.

Though since there was basically no automation here prior to this (I know, shocking, I've used automation at most facilities since about half way through grad school, and my undergrad even had some early ones, though I didn't use them regularly) they probably took a survey and too few people realized how much better their lives would be with it to say "yes, I'd use it!" and got the number of users way too low.

So it can run automation software, but every sample needs to have the exact same solvent and preferably similar concentration and sample volume. Which means you use it for undergrad teaching labs and like nothing else. And it requires clearing it with the director to set it up, because it isn't normally running. In fact there might be two instruments capable of this.

With only 23 sample holders (holder 1 is for the shimming standard the director keeps there) and people like me submitting 7 at a time that's sort of a problem. Though the bigger issue is probably people submitting night queue stuff early in the day and then blocking anyone else from using that holder for the rest of the day. And there was a bunch of night queue stuff lined up already. And you can't pull a sample out to run yours before theirs is scheduled to run because it's locked in the computer.

To illustrate the point: While I was fixing my giant mistake someone came up and wanted to load samples and I looked at the queue and went "well there are only 6 available spinners and I have 7 samples so...". And he said "well I just want to schedule overnight experiments". For 4 tubes. At 1:30PM. And I had to go "well these that I'm using will be free in 3 hours (or whenever they finish) and those slots will be available". Like I'm sorry if you don't want to come back, but I was not only here first, but I'm loading short experiments for day time running.

Well that was a Friday afternoon blunder (probably due to on my lack of sleep last night): I for whatever reason saw red circles on the automation queue and went "oh they're done I'll pull those to put mine in". And pulled 7 samples out of the physical queue. It's yellow that's done. Red means waiting to run.

Since I always pull samples into the numbered holder I was able to figure out which were which since I only had to choose between three tubes and not the 100+ on the table (they happily were all from people who put enough information on their tubes to help with this, some combination of initials and/or page number/letters). Then I had to go find the facility director and own up to what I did so that he could contact the users and tell them to check their samples to make sure I put the right ones back.

Breton butter cake with a lemon filling (lemon pith + some innards minus the juice, soaked in sugar for a couple of weeks) was a hit at food not bombs. I guess none of their regulars is a baker, so any desserts they have are usually things like packages of cookies for people to take home. Also, cake is easy to eat if you don't really have teeth and there was at least one person who opted for a second piece because of that.

Wow, this essay was depressing. And probably accurate from my limited non-faculty view of things. There are announcements of "new building with X's name on it for Y dollars" where Y doesn't seem to be enough to fund construction of said building all of the time. But donors want their names on things and funding grad student salaries or internal research grants to faculty isn't sexy I guess.

https://bsky.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:uebh4o2jjus4nzvyv3pffssb/post/3mffsaqlt2pou

https://www.publicbooks.org/the-misuses-of-the-university/

You don't get to compare homemade whole wheat bread with a french baguette made from white flour. You have to make a french baguette yourself. Or buy whole wheat bread.

Also this tends to be a cudgel used against fake meat substitutes, which as a vegetarian drives me to distraction, even if I don't particularly like them or eat them in large amounts myself.

And back to the bread telling everyone to make their own bread because it's healthier basically excludes anyone who doesn't have the time or money to do it. As much as I enjoy doing it sometimes, it is a very upper middle class activity in modern american society. Thanks npr (spoken as a devoted morning listener, it's been my wake up alarm for over five years now).

I like my popcorn usually dry with a sprinkle of salt (or cheese powder, but I ran out of that, or sometimes powdered sugar). It's fast and doesn't require my attention so if I forget the worst thing that happens is I find stale popcorn in the microwave the next day. Weird, but not dangerous.

I have two of these little silicon tubes that each make one serving of popcorn, but I think they make larger silicon bowls suitable for using the microwave. Learn from me though: do not use a paper bag to do it. Or at least do not reuse the same bag!

Didn't buy more popcorn kernels at the grocery store since the price seems to be creeping up for the cheapest generic ones I buy. Smart and final has giant (35 lb / 15.9 kg) bags are a good price. I usually get 60 oz (1.7 kg) at a time and it lasts me maybe two months. So 15.9 kg isn't totally excessive, right? I would just have to repack it into better packaging?

Watch it turns out you can't make this stuff in the microwave (it's "giant mushroom popcorn").

I think lemon might be another flavor like mint where now that I've made it myself I wouldn't bother eating it at anywhere but the fanciest of ice cream shops, and nothing available in a supermarket. The flavor complexity from the combination of a large proportion of fresh juice + a good amount of zest steeped in the ice cream base is amazing. This batch is a little icy, I think it might need more cream (I used all half and half in the custard for this attempt). The raspberries are a good addition, though I maybe should have added a bit more. Or maybe try larger blackberries next time? Though this is predicated on getting more home grown lemons from someone.

If I really had my act together today I would have realized that this reaction would use up all of a particular homemade reagent and started the sequence to make more of that. But it's 4:40PM and the sequence to make more is a first step that takes an hour and then a second overnight step. Do I really want to *start* setting up something that takes an hour at 5 PM?
