I knew Tasmania got chilly but not that it was so wide spread. When I visited they shut the swimming pool in Port Headland because the temp was almost down to 70⁰F

I don't know where you are but predator poo may work for the rabbits. Here they reckon lion poo keeps deer away and they would never have encountered them.

I don't understand why people are so set on humanoid robots for farming or housework. We are really not the optimum design. How often have you wished you had 4 arms or more eyes? Also we fall over quite easily and we're often too tall or too short. It seems a far better design for a range of jobs is needed, 4 or 6 shorter legs, an extendable body, 4 or 6 extendable arms and all round vision would be a start

The bees working very hard to maintain hive temperature in this heat. They will also be fanning in the hive and spreading water around too. The hive has to be kept around 36⁰C for brood rearing. The adult bees will die in the mid 40⁰C. And then of course their colony is made of wax and if it gets too hot it will all melt. Hive temperature maintenance, summer and winter, is crucial to colony survival #beekeeping

Our neighbour made this new flower bed from scratch last autumn. It was grass before. The garden wall is behind it. He put the rocks along the front then banked the earth up the wall. Then he planted it up almost all with things he'd grown and, 6 months later, it looks like its been there years. It will be a riot of colour soon, its all perennials. (To give you hope Roy is in his 80s) #gardening

This is the swarm we took off a tree the other day. They have made a wonderful job of drawing the wax but we could not see eggs or larvae. That may be because its too soon however this noise is not right and sounded to us like a queenless roar, the saddest sound from a hive, the bees mourning in unison for their loss. We may be wrong but, just in case, we gave them a frame of eggs from next door. If they need a queen they can now make one from an egg or new larvae #beekeeping

This hive was struggling a few weeks back. Just 2 teacup sized patches of brood and not very many bees. So we moved them down into a polynuc which are much warmer than a wooden hive. They have come on well since and today we gave them a top. Ince they have pulled out the wax in there they can go back into a hive. Without this intervention they may have died. #beekeeping

The apiary we did today is in this band of trees, so we were not melting. I have never seen so many oak seedlings coming through. Most of course will not make it but, because one or two trees on the steep bank behind the hives fell over 4 or 5 years ago there is a gap in the canopy and one or two will hopefully make it to their full majesty #beekeeping #nature

I have personally seen nasty growth issues over here with secondary poisonining of plant via either compost or manure which has residue in it from where a persistant herbicide has been eaten by animals or was on green waste in peat free composts. We actually had to give up our garden veg patch after putting alpaca dung on it that was thus contaminated ☹️ I often wonder about the alpacas. Its not uncommon here to see sheep or cattle grazing fields that have been sprayed out

Bees are busy on the celendine bringing in lots of yellow pollen. All 6 very busy in this apiary. Not going through them yet just hefting for stores and checking for busyness. This unseasonably warm spell has given them a boost. 4 apiaries checked and all 4 pleasingly active. #bees #honey #honeybees
