I was fighting a bug in some software (that I was writing) for a couple of hours. I was pretty sure the problem was that I wasn't understanding an interface to a system I was using correctly. I spent a few minutes to write up an issue ticket, making sure I knew what I was doing and could reproduce the problem, to ask for help. While working through it ... I found the bug.

That happens to me a LOT.

I also didn't find a scan of this book, although I did find some other years on IA (I think 1961 which was definitely this series, and other years that I didn't spend enough time to verify but might have been). It was recently pointed out to me that the university library has an open access book scanner, I plan to try that.

Honestly, given its size and configuration, this is something a hand scanner would excel at, if I still had one!

I think this is a use case for LLMs and coding assistants that I can actually see and get behind. The fact that they're exploitative and unsustainably expensive to generate/maintain is still a problem that I don't have an answer for, but running bug and vulnerability checks against your _own codebase_ seems like just a good idea, in 2026. I'm still not convinced for routine code development.

As an academic in 2026, this feels a little too real.

No. Unlike other languages where the static initializer syntax is identical to just creating an instance of the data structure and then copying it over (plus an optimization that leaves out the creating and copying part ;-)), in C the static initializer syntax is specified entirely separately in the language standard, and can be used only at declaration time. (There are also a number of weirdnesses associated with the specific way it is defined and interpreted, related to this.)

I'm trying to record a minidisc from CD, as I used to do frequently back in the day, but I'm suffering. I can't find the remote for my component deck, so I can't use it to start synchronized recordings. My MD walkman will start synchronized recordings fine, but the Blu-Ray player I'm using to send the CD audio over TOSlink doesn't seem to be sending track marks.

It used to be a lot easier. Put in disc, put in minidisc, press record, press play.

You really don't "need" anything for a IIgs, because the built-in peripheral set is pretty great. The only thing I have stuck in mine is an Apple Hi-Speed SCSI card, and those are pretty $$$ these days; there are cards like the MicroDrive and A2Pico that will give you mass storage for much lower cost.

Final note -- your other bane will be parity! For connecting to Linux directly, agetty has no parity configuration and CLAIMS to figure it out on its own, but it's not very good at it. It can matter what key you hit first!

I know I had to read quite a few different bits of SIMH documentation, and I don't think the hints were in the PDP11 documentation at all. It turns out the PDP11 serial port stuff delegates almost all of the work to core SIMH functionality that actually supports more options than the PDP11 stuff seems to indicate. Look around in SHOW SERIAL, HELP ATTACH, SET DLI, etc. and see what you can find. I also think some of the help strings were wrong?

I realize this is not super helpful.

You will certainly need to be in the dialout group on Debian-derived distros (or whatever passes for that on your distro), and you need to edit the simh configuration. I want to say it's something like SET DLI1 SERIAL=/dev/ttyS0, but I don't remember for sure.

The Silent 703 is easier. I have a symlink on one of my machines from /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/serial-getty@ttyS0.service to /etc/systemd/system/serial-getty@ttyS0.service, and it Just Works for serial logins at 9600 baud (which the VT100 on that port is configured for). Other baud rates require editing the config file; copy that file and change the agetty command line (for the Silent 703, use /sbin/agetty 300 %I ti703).

It's very hard to connect the caps-only Teletypes to modern Linux machines, because modern versions of getty (and maybe the Linux terminal driver?) no longer support case conversion. You can use older Linux distributions (perhaps which virtual machines) to achieve this; certainly up through the mid-2000s this was still supported.

Same. I had been using the old Unix ical (the one that came long before Apple's also-ran in that space), and it was fantastic but didn't speak vCalendar. In the mid-2000s I was getting a lot of vCalendar stuff and kind of wanted to be able to use it, and I said "how had can that be?". Ironically I think it might have come out in the wash, because some colors were tough to tell due to its natural gradient from the backlight, but others I could move my head slightly and the polarization effect of the filter would make the line stand out.

This is what I got last. Looks like if they still list it, it's item 374-280. It works great in the two 707s I have, and I think this box of 6 rolls was like $20 or $30 (but that was several years ago).

I block all third party cookies, and have for years. I used to get a lot of problems and have to selectively disable; now I mostly just get journalism sites weeping that I'm ad blocking (I don't ad block, I block trackers and third party cookies) and asking me to please think of all the starving megacorp CEOs who own their sites. I can't remember the last time I had to allow third party cookies for basic functionality.

Gtk+ you just hovered over the menu item (I don't recall if you had to hover with the mouse, or could use the navigation keys; I suspect either one?) and pressed the key you wanted to select. One issue that it seems like this app you mention foresaw is that there was no hold delay or anything, it just instantly bound.

As I recall, either backspace or delete (I think backspace?) deleted a binding. For bindings you couldn't otherwise set, you had to edit a config file.
