No matter what warnings are provided there will still be bug reports upstream and some method will need to be in place to deal with them. It's less of a problem for users who actively choose to switch to COSMIC and setup a theme (they will see these warnings) and instead those who are using a distro that ships a heavily modified version out of the box

No it's a suggestion to deal with the problem from the GNOME side not a judgement on the difficulty. Theming isn't going to go away in the rest of ecosystem and as long as there is some mechanism available other desktops and distros will use them.

FUTO's public stance was much worse previously, at least now they're using a new term so you can easily explain it's something different. My major issues were when they were trying to use the term Open Source and redefine it making things even more confusing.
