#OpenRGB #SteamMachine progress! SteamOS has the leds-valve.c driver which uses IO port access to control the LEDs via the EC. This driver exposes sysfs entries for the LEDs and we can use that. For Windows it may require a custom PawnIO module. I managed to build leds-valve.c on Arch against the stock Arch kernel, will try to make a DKMS package for AUR to easily install it.

I designed a PCB! I ordered some #RP2040 Zero (Waveshare clones) because I didn't feel like soldering a bunch of tiny SMD components when a tiny module with them already soldered could be had for under $3. Just needed to route everything out to connectors to make a functional ARGB hub, which could also act as an ARGB controller from the RP2040-Zero's USB port (though it is meant to be powered from the incoming ARGB connector).

Yesssss! All it needed was the idle reset and to fix an off by one error on the bit counter! Successfully splitting a 30 LED WS2812 stream into two 15 LED streams (actually the controller is sending 255 LEDs but #OpenRGB is only driving 30). Now to rig up a third output to make sure subsequent switches still work.

ARGB splitters suck. They just duplicate the same signal to all outputs and ruin the addressable in ARGB. I'm attempting to use the #RP2040 PIO to create a smart ARGB splitter by counting the bits and outputting the signal to multiple pins. I attempted this years ago on an ATTiny, but it was too slow. PIO is fast enough to pass through the WS2812 signal unharmed as well as able to count the bits to know when to switch outputs.?

I tried the native terminal but I couldn't figure out how to make it use the entire screen for the GUI. Hacker's Keyboard has all the special keys so I don't need screen wasted by the extra buttons, Termux lets you turn them off but the Android 16 Linux app didn't seem to have such an option. It would be wonderful if there was a way to just run a Phosh session fullscreen.

My #PixelFold came today! Installed GrapheneOS (npub1kwa…e0nj), though with most of the Play Store framework as I need Android Auto, Maps, and GMail. I don't want attestation to begin with. Software should not care what hardware it's running on and hardware should not care what software it's running. Bootloader locking should be at the whim of the device's owner not the companies that made it, and it should be optional with the option to enroll your own keys if you wish to use it. Moving ownership from Google to another company doesn't solve the inherent problem here. I own my device, not the manufacturer.

Working on #OpenRGB at the library is relaxing. Today I cleaned up ProfileManager code and added the ability to load a profile on open, which I think will replace the AutoStart-specific load profile option. The new profile format integrates properly with plugins, allowing saved profiles to save effects plugin effects directly rather than the plugin having its own profile system. Tested On Open, On Exit, On Suspend, and On Resume on both Windows and Linux.

My Touchpad Emulator project is now in the #AlpineLinux testing repository! My merge request got merged this morning and I was able to install it on my #postmarketOS edge devices! The package name is touchpad-emulator. It turns the touchscreen into a trackpad style mouse to make desktop UIs easier to use on a touch-only mobile device.

Success! I've installed a new battery in my #OnePlus 6 running #postmarketOS. Old battery capacity reported around 0.5Ah, new battery out of the box reports 2.96Ah and was around 50% charged, so letting it charge up now. Used a hair dryer to weaken the adhesive and iFixit (npub1ulc…x3hg) suction cup and picks to get the back off. After removing the back, swapping the battery is quite simple.

Trying to calibrate my OnePlus 6 and 6T batteries on #postmarketOS. I noticed my OP6T has had worse and worse battery life lately and my "new" OP6 has even worse. Added charge monitoring display to the Powersupply app and have been doing charge/discharge cycles. The phones go from 100 down to 0 and pmOS shuts down, but if I power back on a few times the power tracking resets to 100% and continues running a while longer. Doing compile jobs pulls ~6W which makes for a decent discharge load.

New weird issue I've run into with #Librewolf on #postmarketOS / #AlpineLinux - the latest version in the Alpine repository doesn't want to play any videos. I've tried on both YouTube and several Peertube instances and videos just sit at an endless spinner. Audio works fine, playing music from my Subsonic server works no problem. Tried the #OnePlus 6T camera in #OBS and it works! Cannot select resolution and the default is pretty small and zoomed in, but frame rate is smooth. Might be another way to record video with #postmarketOS!

Just pushed an update to my Touchpad Emulator for Linux phones running #postmarketOS. Added a udev rule and modules-load file to set up the needed devices for the `input` group. Add your user to that group and you no longer need to enter your password. This also makes it seamless to have #TouchpadEmulator autostart on login! The program allows the touchscreen surface to be used as a laptop-style touchpad mouse, making desktop apps easier to use on small screens.

Tested the latest #GNOME #Snapshot on #postmarketOS on my #PINE64 #PinePhonePro! It's been a while since I revisited the PinePhonePro but with cameras and camera utilities coming a long way on newer devices I wanted to revisit #libcamera on the PinePhones. I installed Doylov Vasiliy (npub1f27…g56p)'s cameractrl and it successfully controls focus, but the PPP camera seems to have autoexposure that reduces the utility of cameractrl's exposure slider. Anyways, here's a picture of some other postmarketOS devices.

I'm impressed with the #GNOME #Snapshot app. Built in QR code scanner is fast and detected even blurry codes. The stock #OnePlus 6/6T camera app on Android doesn't scan codes at all. This was a big lacking area in #LinuxMobile as QR codes are everywhere and everyone expects you to be able to scan them but #postmarketOS was unable to do so until the recent camera bringup, at least for the OnePlus 6T.

Just found out #LibreWolf is packaged in #AlpineLinux now! This includes #postmarketOS! I just migrated from the Flatpak version by copying the contents of

.var/app/io.gitlab.librewolf-community/.librewolf to .librewolf

and

.var/app/io.gitlab.librewolf-community/config/librewolf to .config/librewolf

then going into about:profiles in native LibreWolf and selecting the correct profile. Also turned on media.webrtc.camera.allow-pipewire in about:config and now cameras work on #OnePlus 6T!

I agree that the defaults are a bit too restrictive but it's easy enough to change, and starting from a default of too much privacy is better than starting with a default of too little. I do want to move away from Firefox Sync now since Mozilla holds the keys to that system, maybe I'll look into self hosting it.

Working on an improvement to Adam Pigg (npub16ss…2rua)'s Supersonik music player/Subsonic client for #LinuxMobile. I'm adding support for automatic album artwork fetching from Last.fm, a feature I had in my old CalcTunes Android app. I got the file handling cleaned up so Last.fm images are cached in the app's .local folder and loaded when the Subsonic server itself has no art for a given album. Turned a blank white page into something nice to look at!

I made a program to help with using desktop applications on #LinuxMobile called Touchpad Emulator, it lets you use the entire screen surface as a laptop-style touchpad and uses either the volume buttons or alert slider (OnePlus 6/6T) to switch from touchscreen to mouse mode. The main developer of the xiaomi-elish #postmarketOS port, Jianhua Lu, asked me to test a note taking app called rnote with the Xiaomi pen now that it is working. I'm happy to report that yes, the pen works great! I really like this app and will definitely be using it more in the future as a replacement to the note taking Android app the tablet originally shipped with. Only issue is the pen buttons currenty act as page up and page down rather than as pen buttons, but that's how the pen works.

New #phosh #squeekboard landed in #postmarketOS! Handles fractional scaling significantly better now! The keyboard still gets smaller, but it stretches to fill the available space rather than wasting space with black bars and making the keys even smaller. I hope that fractional scaling eventually will not impact keyboard height at all, but this is already a huge usability upgrade.

Got Touchpad Emulator working on my #Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro running #postmarketOS! It is odd in that the volume up and down keys are on two different input devices so I had to do some refactoring to handle that. Also the touchscreen emits different events for some reason and it emits them in a slightly different order than on other devices I've used Touchpad Emulator with, so I had to make a workaround for that. I think that workaround messed with scroll wheel emulation, a problem for tomorrow.

Also, I noticed that the OnePlus 6T kernel (linux-postmarketos-qcom-sdm845) does not have CONFIG_HID_PLAYSTATION enabled. I've seen complaints that DualShock 4 controllers didn't work and I just bought a GameSir X2S Bluetooth phone grip controller that mimics a DS4. It pairs just fine, btmon shows controller data is coming in, but no input device gets registered. It works on my PC (Arch Linux) and dmesg shows the "playstation" driver is responsible.

Works! I have USB network between the laptop and tablet, stream is 30fps 2560x1600 but the quality isn't great, haven't messed with settings to try and improve it though. Only major issue so far is the screen auto dimming isn't inhibited on the tablet.

OnePlus 6T is indeed great with #postmarketOS! I have been messing around with it for several years now and it's the best Linux phone experience I've used. I still have my main phone on Android, but have a second SIM for my Linux phone. I do calls and texts on the Android phone but the Linux phone is amazing for pocket coding, SSH, VPN, file management, etc. as it truly feels like a pocketable PC rather than an Internet-enabled appliance.
