My folks are drying out some doug-fir lumber that they sawed up on their small-scale mill (all from trees sustainably thinned out from a crowded forest). These will take some months to dry out, but once done, helps avoid cracking from shrinkage.

Happy to see the perennial brassicas / tree collards at my family's thriving so well! They're almost half as tall as I am!

These are a mix of the EFN's perennial kale grex and open-pollinated seeds from the "Michigan" strain from Project Tree Collard. They should be able to survive 0-10°F (-18°C to -12°C) and will hold well into winter. Growth usually resumes in February.

If you want winter greens, these are where it's at!

Fun local fact for my Washington friends: WA state leads the US in rhubarb production, and of that, the vast majority of acreage is in Pierce County.

In fact, I found out there's a Rhubarb festival in Bonney Lake each year in late June which I'm considering checking out.

Never seen baby rhubarb previous to now. These are grown from seed from the Experimental Farm Network's "Rhubarb Breeders Mix".

This mix is of 4 different varieties all allowed to cross with each other. Rhubarb are normally asexually/clonally propagated, so if one of these is particularly good, we might have a new variety on our hands.

Excited to pick green tea leaves here soon. They can grow quite well in mild locations in western Washington.

I planted this green tea plant 15 years old and it has survived some very hard frosts (down to -12°C/10°F) in the Chehalis Valley where it's planted.

We tried fermenting the leaves to make black tea a few years back, but didn't leave it long enough. Ended up with something amber-colored, but it was quite good!

My perennial tree collards are looking great, after all these frosts (despite some bug damage).

Per. tree collards can live several years, producing leaves as soon as the season starts unlike annuals.

This one is a 1 yr old plant from a strain called "Michigan", a strain which has survived 0°F/-17°C. When fully grown, some can be over 6 ft/2 m, and produce large quantities of greens throughout the year (and can be harvested well into winter).
