Ended up uninstalling Vivaldi and replacing with Ungoogled Chromium.

For use on those websites that suck and don't work with Firefox (banks, ISP user portals, etc.), not having middle button paste work in the browser is too much friction for me. Especially on a tool that I only use occasionally to get sh!t done when forced to.

Oh well.

Seems like it's been a busy week for the Alpine devs.

This weekend repo upgrade linux-stable from 7.0.10 > 7.1.3; Plasma from 6.6.5 > 6.6.6. I'll be keeping an eye on the later. Ha.

Maybe I'll take a swipe at trying the 7800 XT (RDNA3) card in my main machine again to see if things have improved. It's too nice out to be screwing around in the lab today.

#Linux #AlpineLinux #AMDGPU

This is at idle.

The 6 x 2.5GB ports (one active) and dual nvme probably not helping.

You are getting much more compute / W bang for the buck. At least at idle. Ha

This is a good direction to take.

I hope that non-commercial, community based distros that use Ubuntu as a base will be looking hard at this as an option as well.

To be clear, this is some serious work to migrate and likely constantly vet the Testing pipeline for issues and incompatibilities.

https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/A-new-foundation-for-TUXEDO-OS-Switching-to-Debian.tuxedo

Is it just me or does Vivaldi just not support the standard mouse button middle button paste or Ctrl-^arrow/Ctrl-v_arrow movements anywhere in browser? This is the flatpak version.

Settings reveal nothing, does not appear to be anything in the "hidden" flags settings. I'm guessing this is a choice similar to Gnome 50 (49?) turning off middle button paste as the default.

I mean, if that's the case, then fine. It's a super slick browser but it breaks those ancient little habits when working with forms based work flows.

I'll probably go back to a gecko browser that adheres to the standard 'unixy' way of doing things I guess.

#Vivaldi #VivaldiBrowser

More whinjing about AMD GPU drivers...

So, downgraded the box with the 7800 XT to a 6600 (RDNA 2). Been rock solid over the last 24 hours.

Further research seems to imply that the problems are mostly isolated to 6.1X kernels and RDNA3 GPUs.

I moved the 7800 XT in my test box (7.0.10) and it's been solid in that host ever since. That machine is single head so don't know if that is a factor.

I think I'll try swapping them back in the AM. Too late in the day to be futzing with that now.

If Vivaldi had uBlock Origin I'd probably use it more.

I have to use a Chromium based browser to access some sites (business services web sites) and on those rare occasions I'm always impressed by how "snappy" Vivaldi is compared to Firefox and derivatives.

Vivaldi is a much more useful experience on iOS than the iOS lobotomized Firefox in the Apple app store.

Because of the lack of ublock and other extensions like cookie auto-delete and whatnot, I don't do much casual web browsing or researching things on my iOS phone - just the daily routine sites where I understand that there are no adverts - and only when I'm "out and about", never at home where I have access to 'better' browsing platforms. I got rid of my iPad for similar reasons.

I still use Waterfox on Android because I can run uBlock and other extensions.

Sure, Vivaldi is not totally open source but... I hate to say it... I'm starting to care less when it comes to the hellscape that the web has turned into.

I'll still use a gecko based browser for most things.

#web #internet #vivaldi #firefox #waterfox #librewolf

Found some time to shake the cobwebs off the brane pan with respect to compiling software from source. A couple days ago I was asking about getting an Alpine package for the Klassy theme set for Plasma.

I'm not a developer so it's not my comfort zone really.

I remembered that Alpine generally has the same package naming convention as Arch so I used that example on the Klassy github page as a basis to install all the dependencies and compile. It compiles, super cleanly <kleanly?> too.

But, I can't select it in the Colours & Themes > Global Theme > Application Style picker. It appears with a placeholder bitmap but doesn't allow it to be selected.

Tried logout and reboot for last grasp at straws but no luck. Bummer.

Something else to dig into I guess. The install ran clean so there must be some little subtlety missing when files are copied to their destinations or a config is not updated or something.

Anyone have some hints?

#KDEPlasma #KDE #Plasma #ArchLinux #Linux

Did a fresh Alpine Linux (v3.24) install today and finally got around to trying out getting Blender with ROCM working under Alpine Linux. The linked article shows how to use Distrobox with Ubuntu to run Blender on an unsupported distro, even works on a musl libc distro like Alpine!

I followed the instructions but the Blender (v4.5.3 iirc) that is in the repo for that version of Ubuntu (v24.04) didn't seem to work. I downloaded the latest Blender version from blender.org (v5.1.2) and installed it in the distrobox VM and it worked perfectly!

I'm going to try to do it using a more modern rocm supported distro in the Distrobox next.

This pretty much negates the last daily driver niggle for Alpine for me... other than the sftp annoyance I posted about earlier - which I can work around easily enough.

https://thomchroma.fr/en/blog/gpu-rendering-blender-rocm-hip/

#Linux #Distrobox #AlpineLinux #Alpine #AMD #rocm #hip #Blender

Anyone know why using sftp with Dolphin in Plasma is so slow in Alpine Linux?

Using Debian, doing the same thing is like greased lightning.

It's not network, ssh/scp/rsync/sftp command line works wicked fast between hosts with Alpine.

Something about Alpine and Plasma it seems. This has been an on-going thing.

Anyone know a workaround, beside using a different protocol I mean? I guess since the whole "Flatpak creating a dependency on systemd" bullshit has surfaced this week there has been some other conversations about systemd going on throughout the Fediverse.

I've seen some oblique references to Debian making an effort to make OpenRC more viable as an alternate init system. That's about all I've gathered on my hit-n-run timeline surfing the last several days.
