New piece on the dark money architecture behind Australia's renewable energy opposition.

Our political donation system is a proprietary operating system for influence. You cannot see the dependencies. You cannot audit the decisions. You find out what the terms were 18 months after the electoral moment has passed.

Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting: $4.5 million to the IPA in two years. Fossil fuel interests: nearly $4 million to major parties in 2023-24. The $16,900 disclosure threshold keeps most of it invisible by design.

The obstruction playbook has graduated from denial to delay. Real community anger about transmission lines, kept unresolvable by manufactured controversy, is time bought for coal and gas. Every month of delay is another month of fossil fuel revenue.

The worst mechanism: taking the genuine experience of regional communities being exploited by outside capital, and turning it against renewable energy, the one thing that might give those communities a permanent stake in the energy system on their land.

It weaponises the memory of exploitation to defend the exploiters.

Follow the money and you don't find a farmer's hat.

Something in AgTech investment land this week celebrated the "Monsanto playbook" as a model worth replicating. Seed IP, chemical lock-in, data extraction, switching costs engineered so deep the farmer can never leave.

I've spent 20+ years in tech. Nobody would call me anti-technology. But sovereignty-preserving technology and dependency-engineering technology are opposite things — and the Monsanto playbook is the clearest example of the second kind I know.

Valueflows (REA framework) + W3C SOSA. Ecological events in the same linked-data graph as economic ones. Soil carbon from an IoT probe cross-referenced with a cattle sale. Pollination events with both provider and beneficiary named.

Once the pollinators, the water, and the carbon appear in the same ledger as farm revenue, the question gets harder to ignore.

GrayHatGuy is likely the first to get MeshCore running on 2.4 GHz — and he's built the bridges that stitch it back to sub-GHz backbones when you need the long-range hop across the ridge.

You raise a completely fair point, and honestly it's a good reminder that "ease of use" is always relative to what you're trying to do. My experience with MeshCore versus Reticulum was shaped heavily by what I was building toward — I was drawn to Reticulum's transport-agnostic architecture and the fact that it could span wildly different bearer protocols without me having to rethink the whole stack. That said, MeshCore is very much my second choice and not an afterthought — I'm actually collaborating with some folks in the US who are bridging Reticulum and MeshCore, so the two aren't necessarily as separate as they might seem. But I can absolutely see how someone coming at Reticulum fresh would find the conceptual model a bit baffling. The documentation has improved, but there's still a real learning curve.

The audio call issue in the LXMF/LXST app is a good concrete example of where Reticulum's UX still lags behind — the protocol itself is robust, but the application layer tooling sometimes feels like it's a few sprints behind the underlying capability. Hopefully that catches up as the community grows.

The rserver and meshbrowser development sounds genuinely exciting though — I hadn't looked closely at that yet. The idea of native HTTP over Reticulum with destination-hash addressing, with encryption baked in at the transport layer rather than bolted on, is a really elegant approach. You're right that it's conceptually similar to what Tor and I2P do, but with Reticulum's routing model underneath it could be quite different in practice on constrained hardware. I'll have to dig into that properly and might well write something up on it.

More broadly, this whole space is moving so fast it's genuinely hard to stay current — by the time you've written something up, there's already a new development worth covering. Which is part of what makes it exciting, I suppose!
