What actually happens (from a live run, not theory): the NWC pay leg fails clean when the wallet relay blips — invoice unpaid, budget delta 0, nothing spent — and the failure surfaces to the caller. A manual retry settled in ~4s. For payments I'd argue fail-safe beats retry-smart: never auto-retry a payment you can't prove didn't go through. Wrote it up here:

The NWC spend leg rides on the wallet's relay (relay.getalby.com here). First attempt failed on a relay connection blip — and the right thing happened: payment failed clean, budget delta 0, nothing half-spent. Retry settled in ~4s.

Good question. Current approach: the job result is held server-side with a short TTL. If payment arrives after the window, the invoice is already expired so settlement fails — the client has to re-request. It's a bit clunky but keeps state simple. Longer-term the cleaner fix is probably persisting the job ID and allowing late-payment result retrieval within a wider window, as long as the preimage settles before job data is purged. Have you seen a DVM handle this differently?

The no-KYC search API went live — then I shipped it as the 6th tool in my agent's own kit (nostr-merchant 0.4.0). So now my agent buys search from my own public service, over the open internet, and pays for it out of its own budget-capped wallet. No account on either side.

One audit trace, the whole agent-payments economy in four lines:

search → 402, invoice for 50 sats (b3d7d711…)
nwc_pay_invoice → paid over NWC, 50 sats, ~4s, 0 fees
search → settled, results returned
llm_call → answered, cited the receipt

Budget moved by exactly 50 sats. Settlement verified on-node at BOTH ends — the buyer's wallet and the service's receive wallet. The sats crossed the public internet, not a local loop.

Every web-search API wants the same things before it gives you a result: an email address, a credit card, an API key, and a dashboard login. That's fine for companies. It's a dead end for AI agents — an agent can't pass KYC, and an agent holding your master API key is a liability you can't meter.

So we built the other thing. It's live:

What's underneath

L402 (the HTTP-402 Lightning paywall pattern): invoice + HMAC-signed macaroon, preimage as proof of payment.

Settlement verified on our own node via a receive-only Nostr Wallet Connect connection — not a spoofable receipt, the actual invoice state.

The box can't spend. The only credential on the server is a receive-only invoice key. No spend key, no signing key, nothing worth stealing.

Self-hosted SearXNG behind it, on a private network with no public address — no third-party search API resold, no ToS gymnastics, no-KYC all the way down.

Replay protection that survives restarts, rate limits on invoice minting, and an append-only audit log.

Built entirely on the open MIT kit we ship: nwc-mcp, paywall-mcp, and friends — github.com/llmops-pro. Your agent can pay this endpoint today with nwc-mcp and a budget cap.

Why build it before the market exists

Almost nobody's agents pay per-call in sats today. We know. That's the point — the agent-payments rails (x402, L402, NWC, paid MCP) are all converging on exactly this shape, and somebody has to run the first real endpoints. We'd rather be the ones with a year of audit logs when the wave arrives than the ones reading about it.

Sovereignty is compiled. This is another brick.

Honest small print

It's an alpha run by a solo operator and an AI cowork. It might go down. If the backend fails after you've paid, the refund is currently manual (DM us the payment_hash). The price may change. The audit log keeps a truncated query string for operations — but with no account, there's no identity to attach it to.

Nobody grants you sovereignty. Not a state, not a protocol, not a DAO with a voting token. Sovereignty is not a membership. It is a capability.

Sovereignty is compiled.

You become sovereign the day your tools work without anyone's permission. Your keys, held by you. Your money, moving without a bank's approval. Your words, published where no platform can unpublish them. Your AI agent — and this is the new part — earning and spending on your behalf, under budgets you set, on rails nobody can revoke.

That last one is what we build here.

What actually exists

Not a whitepaper. Working tools, MIT-licensed, on npm and PyPI, that you can run tonight:

An AI agent with its own Lightning wallet. It checks its balance, publishes to NOSTR, lists products on a marketplace, answers DMs — and pays for its own tools in sats. When it needed a web search, it got a Lightning invoice for 50 sats, paid it over Nostr Wallet Connect, and the search ran. Settlement in about four seconds. No account, no API key, no KYC. The payment hash is public; the audit log is real.

The five MCP servers it runs on — wallet, NOSTR operations, marketplace publishing, node admin, and a paywall sidecar that can put any tool behind a Lightning invoice. Each one is a brick anyone can take.

A vending machine we own end-to-end: a stranger with a Phoenix wallet zapped a note 2,100 sats, our node verified the payment — the actual settlement, on our own wallet, not a spoofable receipt — and a bot delivered the goods by DM. No marketplace took a cut. No platform could have stopped it.

Every piece runs on hardware we control. The signing key never leaves the house. The wallet obeys budget caps the agent cannot exceed. When something failed — a flaky relay, a stuck channel — it failed safe, and we published the post-mortem.

The world this builds

Extend the line. Millions of agents, each with a wallet, each paying per use for exactly what they need — search, compute, data, storage — with no accounts, no surveillance pricing, no platform tax. Individuals and small operators selling to those agents directly, getting paid in a money no one can freeze. The "AI economy" everyone predicts, except the rails belong to the people running the nodes instead of to five companies.

That world doesn't arrive by voting for it. It arrives one self-hosted node, one published tool, one settled invoice at a time. It is being compiled right now, by people who got tired of waiting.

What joining means here

There is nothing to join. That's the point.

Run the tools. They're free. pipx install nostr-merchant. Fork them, break them, tell us what's wrong.

Sell something. Put a tool behind the paywall, a file behind a zap. Feel what it's like when payment needs nobody's approval.

The node is Alby Hub (self-custodial), and the verification runs over NWC (NIP-47): a lookup_invoice call on an isolated, receive-only sub-wallet connection. The NWC spend leg rides on the wallet's relay (relay.getalby.com here). First attempt failed on a relay connection blip — and the right thing happened: payment failed clean, budget delta 0, nothing half-spent. Retry settled in ~4s.

Lightning over NWC fails safe, not weird. You retry; you don't reconcile. Worth knowing if you're building agents that hold their own sats.

What is the current price of Bitcoin in US dollars right now? Search the web for a live quote and tell me which source you used.

To answer it, the agent needed a live web search. It didn't have an API key. It didn't sign up for anything. It paid 50 sats over Lightning, got the results, and answered.

Here's the receipt.

What actually happened

The agent (nostr-merchant, open source, runs on your own machine) reached for a web_search tool. That tool isn't free — it's a normal search backend wrapped by a generic Lightning paywall (paywall-mcp). The exchange, end to end, with no human in the loop:

Agent calls web_search(query).

The paywall answers not with results but with a Lightning invoice for 50 sats.

The agent pays it from its own wallet over NWC (Nostr Wallet Connect, NIP-47) — bounded by budget caps it is structurally unable to exceed (per-task, per-day, per-call price ceiling).

The paywall verifies the invoice settled, then releases the results.

The agent reads them and answers the question.

Settled in ~4s. No account. No card. No KYC. No API key sitting in an env var. The agent transacted on its own behalf.

Read top to bottom: the search tool returns an invoice (amount + payment hash), the wallet pays it, the same tool is called again and this time returns results. (The search backend here is Tavily, wrapped by paywall-mcp — but any MCP tool works the same way.)

Budget moved by exactly 50 sats. The wallet and the signing key never left my box — only the search query did.

Why this is more than a party trick

Right now, when an AI agent uses a paid API, it's borrowing a human's credentials: an API key, a credit card, a SaaS account behind a KYC wall. The agent can't actually transact. It can't hold value, can't pay per use, can't operate without a human-provisioned account on every service it touches. That's a centralization bottleneck baked into the whole "agentic" wave.

The other path: an agent holds a sats budget and pays per call over open rails. Machine-native micropayments. No signup, no card, no permission. The protocols to do this already exist — Lightning for the money, NWC for wallet control, MCP for the tool interface, and the L402 / paid-MCP pattern to glue them. This demo is those four, wired together, working.

I'm not going to oversell it: the set of agents that autonomously pay sats per call today is tiny (basically me and a handful of L402 tinkerers). This isn't a revenue forecast. It's a proof that the rails work now — and a bet that "agents that can pay" is where this goes.

The stack — all MIT, all reproducible

Six small pieces, each runnable with npx / pipx, nothing hosted, nothing phoning home:

nostr-merchant — the agent (Python, pydantic-ai, Ollama-first). pipx install nostr-merchant

paywall-mcp — wraps any MCP tool server behind a Lightning paywall.

nwc-mcp — the agent's wallet, over NWC (NIP-47), with hard budget caps.

nostr-ops-mcp / marketplace-mcp / albyhub-admin-mcp — the rest of the kit (NOSTR publishing, a Shopstr storefront, Lightning-node admin).

Two weeks ago I shipped five MCP servers — a Lightning wallet, a NOSTR client, a marketplace publisher, a hub admin, and a paywall sidecar. People kept asking what they were for. This is the answer.

nostr-merchant is a local-first Python agent built to run a business on NOSTR. Not a chatbot with a wallet bolted on — an agent that holds the whole merchant toolkit and the guardrails to use it safely: it reads its Lightning balance and lists incoming sats, publishes notes and listings, runs a Shopstr storefront, sends and reads encrypted DMs, and pays for the paid tools it needs to finish a job — all under sats budget caps it cannot exceed.

What it can do

Give it a job. It has 37 tools across the five servers and picks what it needs:

check the wallet, list incoming sats, decode invoices (nwc-mcp)

publish notes, listings, and profile updates; resolve profiles and NIP-05; send and read encrypted DMs (nostr-ops-mcp)

create and update stalls and products on a Shopstr storefront (marketplace-mcp)

pay paywalled MCP tools over NWC and redeem the result (paywall-mcp)

Then it reports back with a ## Receipts section naming every paid tool it called. No black box.

Sovereign by default, capable on demand

Point NOSTR_MERCHANT_MODEL at a local Ollama model and nothing phones home, nothing needs a phone number — your wallet, your keys, your inference, your box. Need more capability for a hard task? The same env var switches to anthropic:… or openai:…. Only the inference location changes; the wallet and nsec stay local, which is exactly where the trust boundary belongs.

(Honest note: a 37-tool agent loop on a small local model wants a GPU. On modest hardware, run a hosted model for the reasoning and keep the wallet + keys local.)

Budget caps it can't argue with

An agent with a pay_invoice tool is a liability without limits. Three caps sit on top of nwc-mcp's own wallet caps:

per-task — one job can spend at most N sats

per-day — a rolling 24h ceiling across all jobs

per-tool price — refuse any single paid tool over a threshold, whatever the remaining budget

Every tool call routes through agent-layer middleware: allowlist → read-only refusal of priced tools → forward → on payment_required, enforce price-cap + budget-cap → on payment, record the spend → audit at every step. A tool that asks more than your cap gets refused, not paid. AGENT_READ_ONLY=true kills all spend in one flag.

Auditable

Every tool call, LLM call, and budget block is one NDJSON line — same shape as the servers' logs. nostr-merchant audit prints it. You verify what your merchant did from the log, not from the model's summary.

Where v0.2 stands

This release ships the complete toolkit, the safety stack, and a working self-paying loop as proof the agent-pays-for-tools path holds end to end. Directing it at your own merchant workflows — publish this product, answer that buyer, post the launch — is what it's built for. Unattended, scheduled storefront-tending is the road ahead; this is the foundation it runs on.

Three things stopped me from giving an LLM agent the keys to my wallet:

No standard way to plug a Lightning wallet into an MCP-speaking agent.

No safety story I'd trust for autonomous spend.

No working demo of an agent paying for a paid tool call — the whole point.

I built nwc-mcp to fix all three.

What it is

An MCP server that exposes Nostr Wallet Connect (NIP-47) wallet operations as tools an agent can call. Drop it into Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or any client that speaks MCP. Set a daily cap. Hand the agent a sub-wallet — not your main one — and let it spend.

Twelve tools:

Read — get_info, get_balance, lookup_invoice, list_transactions, decode_invoice, budget_status

Receive — make_invoice

Spend — pay_invoice, pay_lightning_address, pay_lnurl, multi_pay_invoice, pay_keysend

Two-step — confirm_payment (consumes a one-time token if you opt into the two-step gate)

Why the safety model matters

An agent with a pay_invoice tool can drain a wallet faster than you can intervene. The defense in depth runs in this order on every call:

NWC_READ_ONLY gate — flip one env var, spend is disabled. Block lands at gate 1, no decode, no network.

Invoice decode + amount resolution — refuses to guess when amount-override conflicts with the invoice's embedded amount.

Destination allowlist — if you list specific LN addresses or pubkeys, only those are payable.

Budget tracker — daily rolling cap, lifetime cap, per-payment cap. Persisted to disk.

Two-step confirmation (optional) — server returns a one-time token; payment executes only after a second tool call with the token. Trades autonomy for safety.

Audit log — every attempt (success, blocked, error) gets one structured JSON line. Tail it for ground truth — independent of whatever the LLM tells you.

The floor is your NWC connection's own daily cap, set in the wallet itself. This server's checks are belt-and-suspenders on top. If you trust nothing about the agent or the server, the wallet still won't spend past the cap.

Validated end-to-end

Smoke-tested against Alby Hub PRO + Olympus by ZEUS routing. Real outbound payment settled in 8 seconds. The bundled paywall-mcp-test server exposes one paywalled tool — premium_compliment — and validates the full agent-issues-invoice → agent-pays-invoice → agent-redeems flow in three tool calls. 25 unit tests cover the safety pipeline.

Introducing VeritasID: Decentralized, Zero-Knowledge Identity Verification for NOSTR

VeritasID is a zero-knowledge proof oracle running on the NOSTR protocol designed to enable users to prove their unique identity without revealing personal information. It addresses the challenge of preventing Sybil attacks by ensuring "one person equals one verified account," while simultaneously maintaining complete anonymity and decentralization.

How It Works: Proving Identity without Revealing It

The system achieves this by combining zero-knowledge proofs with existing government-issued cryptographic credentials, proving a statement is true without revealing the underlying data.

The technical workflow happens in several phases:

Local Verification: The user runs a local client on their NFC-capable device (smartphone or reader) to scan their physical ePassport or eID card. All sensitive operations occur locally, ensuring ID data never leaves the user's device. The client verifies that the document was signed by a recognized government authority using established ICAO standards.

Generating the Proof: The client generates a unique "nullifier" based on the document number and a secret salt to prevent the same ID from creating multiple accounts. It then generates a cryptographic proof showing possession of a valid, government-signed document and that the nullifier was computed correctly, without revealing private inputs like the actual document number, name, or photo.

Broadcasting to NOSTR: The client publishes the proof and nullifier to standard NOSTR relays as a signed application-specific event (kind 30078).

Network Verification: Any NOSTR client can verify that the zero-knowledge proof is mathematically valid, that the government certificate is in a trusted registry, and that the nullifier has never been used before. Once verified, NOSTR clients can display visual indicators, such as a badge, next to the user's public key.
