adding the -jvm won't fix that, though

gradle can be a little funky sometimes

doing a build scan or printing the dependencies can often times help find the cause of that

and I'm the one with the most knowledge of what's on it!!!

because it was set up by the old software team, and there is zero documentation on it that I can find.

for the longest time we never even had a backup of it, so if the disk failed or the jetson died, we wouldn't have been able to recover it!

so, I took a disk image of the entire thing, so that if it does fail then I can either write that image back to another nvme ssd, or I can mount the disk image in order to figure what files were changed and I can restore them piecemeal

but for all I know there can be some magic critical service running that I know nothing about

well, I (much later) find out what the old solution was. which was even worse.
so, first, they opened a remote desktop connection on the jetson (which, yes, means that we're running X11 on the rover. I hate every part of it.)
next, they started up a node.js web server. then they opened up chrome and opened a page on the web server (written in angular btw). in chrome, they shared the camera *as a webcam*, which the node.js server would stream to another page in chrome on our base station.

so, since this is a rover which needs to operate remotely, we need cameras on it, right?
well, when I arrived their solution was to use the official ROS usb_cam package for streaming the video over ROS. this means that it will attempt to resend any dropped messages (e.g. if we lose connection), which, like, is *not* what you want. what you actually want is to just stream it over udp and you only care about the latest frame.
however, because streaming raw video is not a good idea, they used the compression setting

whiiiiiccchhhhh uses png for every frame.
running that would cause our ssh connection to die because it brought the cpu of the jetson to 100%, so we had to force a reboot.

so, I took one look at this, and immediately just decided to hack together something with gstreamer and v4l2 to use the hardware encoder on the nvidia jetson over the course of like half a week. it was not that hard. (though some of that code is dogshit, but whatever)
