They merely absorb as much of it as any other living organism would, then manage to make use of the resulting ionization.<br/><br/>There may have been a lot of this when Earth was young, the ozone layer did not exist, and a lot more radioisotopes left from the original supernova cloud were still on the planet.<br/><br/>Radiosynthesis is not really a surprise. Photosynthesis is basically a special case of it using lower energy but more available electromagnetic radiation, using some special sensitive chemistry (in colorophyll) that can be ionized by visible light. <br/><br/>Since ionization is the key to splitting water and then reducing carbon dioxide, any source of ions whose presence can be tolerated could drive similar reactions given the right chemistry. Thus a plant that first evolves to tolerate high energy ionizing radiation (say by more accurately repairing DNA), could then evolve to make use of the ionization to produce sugar.<br/><br/>It is interesting that plants evolved to use visible light rather than UV as their ion source for photosynthesis.
