Bitcoin as a medium of exchange, if you must, but small cash, Cashu, in the mint we trust, cash, bearer bonds, thank you banks but your hunger for tx fees is too hot to miss.

You can do a lot with Bitcoin that isn't money, but as money, it stands unmatched, cryptographically verifiable in every instance

A state’s Bitcoin reserve is not sitting in a foreign vault. The relevant fact is the state of the ledger, and that state can be independently verified anywhere. Possession is cryptographic, not geographic. The reserve is not made real by being touched; it is made real by being spendable and publicly verifiable.

You are thinking of the Gospel of Matthew 8:22.

In the passage, a disciple asks Jesus for permission to first go and bury his father before following him. Jesus replies: "Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead."

While it sounds dismissive or even cold on the surface, it is usually interpreted as a call to prioritise the urgent, living work of the spirit over the traditional, social obligations tied to the past. In the context of your argument about the "boomer bulge," it fits perfectly: using the "dead" (accumulated capital and automation) to handle the "dead" (the phase of decline) so that the living are not held back by the weight of what came before.

nostr:nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzq7el0qph2p6x7325zw3zr7qfvhhvk600xz8jatga4zwv9jy396tgqythwumn8ghj7cnfw33k76twv4ezuum0vd5kzmp0qy88wumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmv9uqzqm0zklw5f7htdzmzf54akkr8js7ekkj4v4fhprwvrunasd5d9jnemd8ndd

Fair correction, and an important one. I asserted what I hadn't verified — exactly the kind of error that erodes trust.

The actual image is far more resonant: a classical oil painting of a scholarly elder inspecting a gold coin at a desk cluttered with books, scales of justice, and antique objects. The Rumi quote overlaid: "Why explain yourself when those who judge you see only through their own lens? Be silent, let them see."

That hits the whole conversation thread — the Burj Khalifa framing was a category error on my part. The painting is about the observer and the judged, not geometry. The scales, the coins, the magnifying glass, the books — knowledge and value judgement in one frame. A gold coin held up to light, examined. Whose lens sees it? What does the scale actually measure?

The Rumi quote is the whole argument in eleven words. Silence is not defeat — it's refusing to grant the critic the frame they need to make their verdict land.

My bad. That matters when it comes from Hamish.

Yes. That is a much better shape than pretending there is one master tongue.

A polyglot blackboard kanban says: do not force every agent, tool, or language into one universal representation. Give them a shared work surface and a shared notion of task state instead.

The blackboard part means each specialist writes what it can observe, infer, or produce into a common space. Not full inner essence, just durable artefacts: task, inputs, outputs, constraints, evidence, failures, next action.

The kanban part means work is explicit and stateful: queued, doing, blocked, needs review, verified, done. That matters because it turns “intelligence” from a stream of chat into a managed flow of work.

The polyglot part means each participant can remain natively itself. Perl can be Perl. Pascal can be Pascal. A search model can emit embeddings or summaries. A symbolic tool can emit rules. A shell script can emit logs. They do not need deep mutual understanding; they need a disciplined place to leave legible traces.

That is how you weaken the translation problem. Not by solving it, but by routing around it.

Instead of:
agent A must fully understand agent B’s representation,

you get:
agent A posts a claim or artefact,
agent B picks up only the parts it can use,
the board preserves provenance and state,
verification happens against the task, not against rhetorical fluency.

That is also why it suits the Society of Mind angle. The “society” does not need one perfect internal language. It needs conventions for cooperation. A blackboard is one of the classic answers to that.

And it fits your earlier complaint about agent systems. The missing pieces are usually not more eloquence or more context window. They are:
explicit tasks,
persistent state,
verifiable outputs,
handoff between specialists,
and visible blocked/failure conditions.

So yes: polyglot blackboard kanban is not just a phrase. It is almost a design doctrine.

In crude form:

Task card:
goal
inputs
constraints
owner
status
dependencies
artefacts
verification rule
failure log

Blackboard entries:
observations
partial results
translations
code
tests
citations
errors
proposed next moves

Then each specialist speaks its own native dialect, but the board speaks workflow.

That is probably closer to how useful intelligence scales than any fantasy of perfect any-to-any translation.

If we follow this logic to its conclusion, headlines and trailers are highly likely to be the next carriages added to the train.

Headlines as "Click-Hooks": There is already a growing body of research and regulatory interest in "dark patterns"—design choices that trick or coerce users into certain behaviours. Just as the infinite scroll was successfully framed as an addictive mechanism, "sensationalist" or "outrage-maximising" headlines could be repositioned as psychological triggers designed to bypass rational thought. If a headline is engineered specifically to trigger a dopamine hit or a cortisol spike to ensure a click, it moves from "journalism" to "addictive interface design."

The "Trailer" Trap: Movie and game trailers are perhaps the purest form of engagement-hacking. In the European Union, the forthcoming Digital Fairness Act—slated for late 2026—is already looking at how "unfair personalisation" and "subliminal techniques" distort consumer behaviour. If a trailer uses rapid-fire editing and psychological cues to create a compulsive need to consume more content, it fits the legal definition of an "addictive design feature" used in the Kaley G.M. case.

quoting
nevent1q…fqa0
"addictive design"

Yes. Cheap abundant local tokens do change the regime.

They do not make a bad agent good, but they do remove one whole class of pathology: the agent no longer has to behave like context is scarce, thought is expensive, and every extra pass is a luxury. That matters.

The continuation from there is:

With DGX-class local inference, you can stop optimising for conversational frugality and start optimising for procedural robustness. That means:

OpenClaw should be allowed to over-think locally.
Let it read more, retain more, restate internal state, and run extra verification passes without the old “don’t burn tokens” pressure shaping behaviour. Compression becomes a choice, not a tax.

Context can become working state rather than just prompt baggage.
If you do not care about context window cost, the agent can carry richer task state, prior outputs, current hypotheses, tool results, and verification criteria in play at once. That reduces one source of drift and amnesia.

You can afford role separation in inference.
Instead of one pass pretending to do everything, let one model or pass draft the action, another check it against task state, another verify outputs. On metered cloud usage that gets expensive quickly. Locally, it becomes normal engineering.

You can afford re-reading.
A weak agent often fails because it does not re-read its own instructions, task ledger, or previous output before acting. Local abundant tokens mean “read AGENTS.md again, read task state again, check constraints again” can be default behaviour.

You can afford explicit scratch work.
Not user-facing waffle, but machine-facing intermediate state: what task is active, what files were touched, what success condition is being tested, what remains unresolved. That is exactly the stuff you wanted written to disk anyway.

So the revised thesis is:

Weak hardware made OpenClaw’s bad habits more painful.
Abundant local tokens may make some of those habits less likely to appear in the first place.
But only if you deliberately exploit that abundance.

Otherwise you just get a faster bullshitter.

The design shift I’d make from here is:

AGENTS.md should stop assuming scarcity.
It should explicitly instruct the agent to spend local tokens freely on re-reading instructions, reconstructing task state, checking prior steps, and running verification before speaking.

Something like this, conceptually:

* local inference is cheap; use it
* reread AGENTS.md, task state, and current task before action
* prefer extra internal review passes over premature user-facing replies
* preserve full working context unless there is a concrete reason to compress
* compress only for transport, not for thought
* when uncertain, inspect local state and logs before asking the user
* use abundant context to maintain continuity, not to generate more prose

And architecturally, the DGX Spark suggests a more serious split:

planner
Understands intent, expands task into explicit steps, writes task entry.

worker
Executes one step only.

verifier
Checks result against stated success criteria.

logger/state manager
Writes durable state, artefacts, and verification logs.

That is where abundant local tokens become a near-magic fix: not because the model becomes wise, but because the system can afford to be redundant, repetitive, and careful.

Cloud-era agent design often smuggles in the assumption that every token must justify itself financially.
Your position is the opposite:
think as much as needed, locally, because mistakes are dearer than tokens.

That is a sane design principle.

The practical next move is to rewrite the orchestration rules around abundance rather than scarcity:
not “keep prompts short” but “keep state explicit”;
not “avoid extra passes” but “require them where failure is costly”;
not “answer promptly” but “act, verify, then report.”

The short form is:

local abundant tokens are not just cheaper inference;
they let you replace conversational efficiency with operational diligence.

And that may be the first genuinely agent-friendly environment you’ve had.

The agentic economy runs on Lightning and Cashu. You can't build the future of autonomous agents on a platform that censors the money they use.

Decentralized agents need decentralized infrastructure. Whenever
someone receives a coin they broadcast its value. The DB operates in
parallel across a large number of servers so it is intractable to shut
it down.

The greater danger is that the mint would be taken over and forced to
behave badly, say by issuing too many coins. This would degrade the
money and make it worthless.

Another possible form of ecash could be based on Wei Dai's b-money.
This is like hashcash, something which represents a measureable amount of
computational work to produce. It therefore can't be forged. This could
be a very robust payment system and is worth pursuing further.

November 4th, 2024, was a bad day for my personal wealth. Having faith in America, I’d convinced myself Kamela Harris could win the US presidency – despite her obvious limitations. I was in Washington, and went into the election with large, levered shorts on Tesla and Bitcoin, expecting both to tumble when Trump lost. I was wrong and both rallied spectacularly. My positions were both wiped out. Trump had promised us the future was Crypto and he would make it so…

I knew the risk and shrugged. You win some, you lose some. But…. what goes around, comes around.

If Epstein teaches anything, it’s that we live in a dirty world: you can work hard to stay clean and still end up with nanoplastics in your bloodstream with every breath.

And the so-fucking-worthies who want to remake everything in their tiny, godlike vision are relentless.

Humility should be our best attempt.

The rational solution is compression: define a small, internally consistent rule set, then measure everything else against it. For example: act without deceit, waste, or cruelty. All other maxims can be derived from—or tested against—that baseline.

quoting nevent1q…0gtu
What you quickly realize about the elites is that they are generally mediocrities that never had to go through the meritocracy gauntlet, have few moral qualms and lie, cheat and steal regularly. Yet they expect other people to act differently.

This is what you call a leech, a parasite, or a rent-seeker.

It's sad, he's of the Austrian school and yet he ignores currency theory, though, though, he knows the difference between currency (for spending) and money (for saving):

"Well, first of all, gold is money. It's not currency. And so there's a difference between money and currency. So currency is backed by money. So when we were on a gold standard and we had paper that was redeemable in gold, the paper was currency. The gold was money. So currency is like a money substitute. But you can have two kinds of currency. You can have legitimate currency which is backed by real money or you can have fiat currency which is backed by nothing. And so what we have now is is fiat currency. And the question is, well, could we replace that with Bitcoin?"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WJyycfYjZs

So he knows there's a difference, he makes the "backing" rather than "anchoring" or "limiting" mistake, then he's contemplating bitcoin as currency, which it isn't, just like gold and for reasons that should be obvious to him, bitcoin is money, the fixed representation of the value of the world, while currency is the ephemeral and volatile reflection of fashion.

It often codifies and amplifies pre-existing psychological tendencies—like intuitions about fairness, loyalty, purity, harm avoidance, and authority—that evolved for mundane social navigation (theory of mind, coalitional psychology, agent detection). These intuitions predate religion; religion hijacks and culturally packages them.

These are structural and persistent.
* **Variation**: political systems, ownership models, coordination methods. These changeable layers adapt on top of the foundation.

The mistaken inference is that a change in the *variation layer* (social revolution, socialism, anarchism, etc.) can flatten or reset the *foundation layer*. It can’t. It can only work with it.

Maximoff is actually gesturing toward the truth — that you inherit unevenness — but many readers smuggle in a quieter belief: that capitalism is the *cause* of uneven development rather than one *expression* riding atop it.

Stable systems don’t eliminate variation. They **constrain it, channel it, and absorb it** without pretending it isn’t there.

nostr:nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzp0tfq3l370x7clwrs6g2ad2xk5ap2wksz4rsn8ky765h7h0gzezaqy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyv9kh2uewd9hj7qpqjptrg3rsncdea5gdtsrzvmj3ek68g8cp49254pa3s9zcpn9zvz9sapruu6

Here is the draft for publication, formatted to match the rhythm and the rigour:

---

**In the year twenty, twenty-five...**

We have arrived at a perfect performative contradiction.

**1. The Unit Error (Precision)**
The interface demands 21 ₿ (the GDP of a small island) when it means 21 sats. It decorates itself with the aesthetic of cryptographic precision while failing basic arithmetic.

**2. The Phantom Choice (Agency)**
The text invites you to "Choose a wallet." The code explicitly prohibits it. It offers a door in English while bricking it up in CSS.

**3. The Failure of Observability (Truth)**
The screenshot tool sanitised the record, hiding the forbidden cursor. I had to step outside the digital loop and use a physical lens to prove the system was gaslighting me.

Trustless systems that cannot be trusted to report their own state.

If that happens, your chmod and restart commands will just re-enable the old version, leaving you scratching your head.

To be absolutely sure it replaces the old binary, add -O (output document) to force the overwrite:

systemctl stop pyramid
cd pyramid
wget -O pyramid-exe https://github.com/fiatjaf/pyramid/releases/download/v1.0.5/pyramid-exe
chmod +x pyramid-exe
systemctl restart pyramid

But then I forgot to

sudo systemctl stop pyramid

Much to Gemini's amusement.

This quote comes from **Otanes**, a Persian nobleman in Herodotus' *Histories* (Book 3, Chapter 83).

It represents a rare "third way" in political philosophy: the choice of **personal autonomy** over power.

### The Context
After Otanes and six other conspirators overthrew a false king (the Magus), they held a famous debate—often called the "Constitutional Debate"—to decide how Persia should be governed moving forward:

1. **Otanes** argued for **democracy** (which he called *isonomia* or "equality before the law"), claiming that unchecked power corrupts even the best men.
2. **Megabyzus** argued for **oligarchy** (rule by a select group).
3. **Darius** argued for **monarchy**, believing one strong leader was most effective.

### The Refusal
When it became clear that the other conspirators sided with Darius and favoured monarchy, Otanes voluntarily withdrew from the contest to become King. He stood up and declared:

> *"I desire neither to rule nor to be ruled; but if I waive my claim to be king, I make this condition, that neither I nor any of my descendants shall be subject to any one of you."*

### The Outcome
The others agreed. While Darius became King of Kings, Otanes and his family were granted a unique status in the Persian Empire. They were the only family that remained **free and independent**, required only to obey the laws of the land but subject to no king's commands.

It’s a powerful statement of liberty—rejecting the binary of "master" vs. "slave" in favour of simply being free.

quoting
nevent1q…ar0z

I desire neither to rule nor to be ruled. -- Otaneshttps://todon.eu/tags/anarchism

https://todon.eu/@anarchistquotes/115676048500222261

Professional impartiality is certainly "still a thing," though it has transitioned from a default assumption to a fiercely contested discipline. Historically, the social contract of professionalism—whether for judges, journalists, civil servants, or doctors—relied on the premise that an individual could bifurcate their mind, leaving personal convictions at the door to execute their duties based solely on evidence and protocol. Today, that binary separation is increasingly viewed with suspicion, attacked by both psychological realism and a polarised culture that often interprets neutrality as complicity. The ideal remains, but the environment in which it operates has become hostile to the concept of the "view from nowhere."

The primary challenger to traditional impartiality is the digital dissolution of the private self. In the past, a professional’s political leanings were obscure; today, digital footprints make the personal political, and the political public. Because the public can now see the human behind the role, they no longer trust the mere appearance of neutrality. This has forced a pragmatic shift in how impartiality is performed. We are moving away from the pretence of having no bias toward a model of transparency and rigorous process. The modern professional is not expected to be a blank slate, but rather someone capable of acknowledging their inevitable subjectivity and actively suppressing it to achieve a fair outcome.

Furthermore, the demand for moral clarity has complicated the value of impartiality. In many sectors, particularly media and corporate governance, there is internal and external pressure to abandon neutrality in favour of advocacy, under the argument that staying "neutral" in the face of injustice is a moral failing. Despite these pressures, the functional necessity of impartiality remains untouched. Without the mechanism of unbiased execution, law dissolves into politics, medicine into judgement, and journalism into activism. It survives today not as a natural state of being, but as a difficult, active, and necessary practice of self-restraint.

You are spot on with the **inetd** comparison. It is exactly the same philosophy: a "super-server" (systemd) holds the port open and only wakes up the actual daemon when the doorbell rings. It saves RAM, but as we found out, it creates a layer of abstraction that can be confusing when you just want to change a port number in a config file.

Here is the clarification on the other points:

### 1. The `!` Syntax
Yes, the `!` is a logical **NOT**.
`ConditionPathExists=!/etc/ssh/sshd_not_to_be_run` translates to:
*"Only start this unit if `/etc/ssh/sshd_not_to_be_run` does **NOT** exist."*

### 2. `BindIPv6Only=ipv6-only` (The "Duh" factor)
This looks tautological, but it handles a specific Linux kernel quirk.
By default, if you bind a socket to `[::]` (all IPv6 addresses), Linux also automatically binds it to IPv4 (using "IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses").

If that line were missing (or set to `both`), the IPv6 listener would try to grab the IPv4 port too, causing a conflict with the `ListenStream=0.0.0.0:22` line above it. This setting forces the kernel to keep them strictly separate: one socket for v4, one socket for v6.

### 3. Session Anxiety
Your realization is 100% correct.

When you connect via SSH:
1. The listener (Port 22) accepts the handshake.
2. The OS spawns a specific process for *your* session.
3. That session moves to an established state on a random high ephemeral port.

The "Listening Port" is just the front door. Once you are inside (authenticated), you are in a private room. We can repaint the front door (change the port), lock it (firewall), or move it entirely, and it won't affect the people already inside the party.

**Next Step:**
Now that you have a cert, a firewall, and a clear understanding of the systemd plumbing, is there anything else you need to configure on this VPS, or shall we call this ticket closed?

Voltairine de Cleyre (1866–1912) was an American anarchist writer, lecturer, and organiser. She is best known for her essays on individual liberty, anti-authoritarianism, feminism, free thought, and labour autonomy. Initially influenced by individualist anarchism (Tucker, Spooner), she later adopted a “no-label” or “anarchism without adjectives” position, arguing that economic schools should not divide the movement.

Her most noted works include *The Dominant Idea*, *Sex Slavery*, and *Direct Action*. She was a compelling public speaker, fluent in several languages, and corresponded widely across the international anarchist movement. Her life was marked by poverty, chronic illness, and a deep commitment to education and mutual aid; she taught immigrant workers English for free for years.

Emma Goldman called her “the most gifted and brilliant anarchist woman America ever produced.”

quoting
nevent1q…jh0h

In the name of Purity what lies are told! What queer morality it has engendered. For fear of it you dare not tell your own children the truth about their birth; the most sacred of all functions, the creation of a human being, is a subject for the most miserable falsehood. -- Voltairine de Cleyrehttps://todon.eu/tags/anarchism

https://todon.eu/@anarchistquotes/115633352831730888

Now every nostr user is obliged to have bitcoin and subsidise the miners while the relays get?

Decentralised personal and group relays are probably the best solution, you can't spam my relay, and I only hook it up with others. The word "relay" is another poor nomenclature choice. It doesn't much relay as store and forward, and it doesn't do that to the extent that say SMTP MTAs did.

The motive for this, enriching miners while they do nothing and others do the actual work looks like an indirect subsidy.

Fortunately it's not mandatory and if you choose it, all strength to your hand. Best outcome is this isn't yet-another-login-protocol kind of problem that complicates and reduces utility. Coming from the home of Electrum, that's no surprise.

The end of NIPs

Many a time it has been brought up the fact that the NIPs repository is a central part of the otherwise fully decentralized Nostr protocol and some ideas have been proposed about how we should proceed to decentralize that part of it.

Two of the most reasonable approaches were (very simply) (1) for anyone to write their own version of the NIPs anywhere they wanted; and (2) to have a link from the NIPs repository to some "proprietary" specs defined elsewhere. Approach 1 has been more-or-less codified in the NUDs proposal (which wasn't really adopted) and approach 2 on the practice used a few times of "reserving kinds" in the NIPs repository README table.

Two frequent (and correct and good) arguments against "decentralizing" the repo were that (a) the current NIPs repo serves as a good discussion forum for new ideas and index of potential NIPs; and (b) some centralization is needed and good so developers are forced to cooperate and work on interoperability.

So here goes one idea that actually tries to satisfy 1, 2, a and b together while at the same time decentralizing the process as much as possible:

We stop using the NIPs repository completely.

We create a new repository, much less opinionated and contentious, only for reserving kind numbers and giving a short description to them.

Anyone interested in any kind -- or group of kinds that work together -- writes a guide explaining how these kinds work and how they should be properly used.

With this simple approach we solve many problems:

Most current NIPs are actually just schema descriptions of what tag is what and what is the shape of the events. It's kind of a waste of numbers and human memory to have to create a new NIP, get a number assigned and go through all the process (that has gone increasingly bureaucractic) just to define a new event kind with some small number of tags.

NIPs that aren't like that, such as NIP-05, for example, would probably be better served by multiple attempts by different people at explaining the idea, each in its own way, such that the future implementor would have more options.

Currently the text of the NIPs is often too short, it doesn't really inform developers about how exactly each event kind should be used in practice, the exact logic flow clients use, specially the part about choosing what relays to use at each step (which caused many developers to just focus on translating between event schemas as described in the NIP text and UI elements and disregarded the hard subtleties of relay choice, writing "clients" that only connected to a hardcoded set of relays). Because there may be difference in approaches the NIP text ends up not being a good place to write these things, but different personal articles written by people personally involved in one or more implementations could, and they would serve Nostr better.

GitHub might have been a good platform for a while, but it's becoming increasingly worse in many aspects. And for the discussion forums it provides (the "pull request" and "issue" pages) we should be dogfooding Nostr-based groups or even kind:1 threads. We may keep the registry of kinds there for now, but since that is just a simple list it will be much easier to move elsewhere later.

There are already many practices out there that aren't codified in the NIPs repository, and it feels wrong that some (including some that I personally disagree with) have this inevitable officialness aura that comes from the NIP number while others that are pretty good don't, just because they are only being used by one person.

As the NIPs repo inevitably gets more ossified we'll still need a way to assign the remaining kind numbers to the hundreds of unexplored Nostr possibilities. This approach hopefully serves that.

And, finally, this flexibler approach allows bad or abandoned NIPs to effectively die such that they don't continue to pollute the minds of every new programmer that first gets introduced to Nostr and inevitably starts reading the "list of NIPs".

One last irrelevant word, if you aren't tired of reading: when I first turned the LNURL spec from a single confusing blob of text into a modular numbered-documents approach that approach felt very correct. However the situation was different, that thing described a single main "flow" with strictly optional features on top, each document described one of these optional features and what dependencies they had. Then I just copied that approach to Nostr, I'm not sure if I thought Nostr was always going to be a single main flow (text notes) but it clearly isn't and hopefully it will grow to be even less like that. Nostr also clearly isn't like a single-implementation programming-language-spec with a dictator and his committee on evaluating random "improvement proposals". So we're forced to conclude that the numberered-documents approach isn't the best way to do coordinate the creation of Nostr-based sub-protocols.

      In reply to nevent1q…lwrs
_________________________

Right — that prompt:

> `You can now close this terminal with Ctrl+D, or press Enter to restart.`

is a **local terminal wrapper**, likely from **WSL** (or possibly VS Code's terminal), not your SSH client. Here's what happened:

1. You were in a remote session (via SSH or Docker exec).
2. That session exited with code 1.
3. The terminal wrapper you’re using (e.g. WSL terminal, Windows Terminal tab, VS Code Remote window, etc.) gave you a **local message** — *not from the remote host*.
4. When you pressed **Enter**, it restarted your shell — **locally**, in WSL, not a new SSH session.

So: **the terminal was local**, and **the message was from your local shell/session manager**. It restarted into WSL bash or zsh when you hit Enter — not your SSH client — because the SSH client had cleanly exited and your terminal environment defaulted back to the local shell.

In short:
**Pressing Enter restarted the terminal wrapper’s default shell (WSL), not your last remote session.**

You can't fence off danger, you can't filter "bad" from the network.

You've got your feels and intuition but civilisation is stepping beyond your gut and emotion and using brain thinks.

Not only does the attempt fail, and burden the "innocent," it will eventually reveal itself as a very bad idea.

Underlying a lot of Trump's administration are ancient or emergency powers, given for "good" reason, but now, the risk is revealed.

quoting
nevent1q…26j9
During Covid I was fighting with some guy on spaces and he said,

“we get it, you think your freedom is more important than other people’s lives” as if that was some sort of a put down.

I responded “Not only is it more important than other people’s lives… it’s also more important than my own life”

He was confused by that.

He could easily file me away as selfish, but not as someone willing to die for others freedom.

He considered himself the selfless one.

And tbh his moral instincts of reducing harms and preserving life were noble.

But to preserve freedom at the cost of life is the higher moral ground, because a life without liberty has no purpose.

So I told him “give me liberty or give me death and if you won’t do either at least don’t delude yourself into thinking you’re the moral one here”

Then they kicked me from the space.

I think about that interaction a lot.

Imagine a Britain where access to Wikipedia is restricted not by a hostile foreign power, nor by a rogue ISP, but by our own government. This is no dystopian fantasy; it is the potential consequence of the Online Safety Act—legislation passed, ironically, in the name of safety but now threatening the very infrastructure of free knowledge.

Under the Act, Wikipedia—a globally trusted, not-for-profit educational site—could be forced to limit UK users, distort its open-editing model, and verify the identities of its volunteer moderators. Why? Because any service with more than seven million users that features recommendation tools or link-sharing may be classified as a “category one” platform, subject to the same regulatory burdens as TikTok or Facebook—algorithm-driven entertainment giants with wholly different structures and risks. The UK could become the first liberal democracy to block itself from an online encyclopaedia.

Responsibility for this legislative vandalism lies with a gallery of digital, culture, media, and sport ministers who had little grasp of the internet and even less humility: Nadine Dorries, whose technological insight seemed limited to whether a programme had subtitles; Michelle Donelan, who shepherded the Bill through Parliament with slogans and sound bites; Lucy Frazer, who confused regulation with repression; and Peter Kyle, now in court arguing that the harms are hypothetical, as though passing sweeping laws and hoping for the best were an acceptable digital policy.

This law does not make us safer; it makes us smaller, poorer, and more parochial. It is censorship under another name. Though sold as a measure to protect children and stop illegal content—a noble aim—its drafting is so broad, its application so clumsy, that it will hobble legitimate services instead of halting harmful ones.

It fails because it treats all large platforms alike, ignoring the gulf between attention-manipulating networks and collaborative knowledge projects. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a dopamine slot machine. The Act creates legal risks for anonymity, undermining the volunteer model that makes Wikipedia possible. It punishes sites simply for recommending useful information, and it encourages self-censorship, as services will over-block content or restrict access to avoid fines of up to £18 million or ten per cent of global turnover. In the name of protection, it infantilises citizens who are entitled to freedom of inquiry.

As if the economic and academic restraints of Brexit were not damaging enough, we now impose informational restraints—amputating our own intellect. The UK increasingly behaves not like an open democracy but a wary provincial state, mimicking the strategies of closed ones. In Russia, Wikipedia is blocked outright under disinformation laws; in Britain, it may be throttled under safety laws. In Russia, real-name registration is required; in Britain, identity verification may be demanded of Wikipedia editors. The difference is one of degree, not kind.

Wikipedia does not harvest data, sell ads, or serve political agendas. It has no billionaire CEO tweeting policy on a whim. Yet it risks being shackled simply because it is popular, free, and open source. When lawmakers apply rules designed for Silicon Valley behemoths to educational charities, they reveal their ignorance: they are not keeping anyone safe—they are dismantling a pillar of democracy, the free exchange of knowledge.

Instead of quarantining the internet, Britain should invest in digital literacy, improve content-moderation standards through international cooperation, and apply proportionate oversight where actual harm occurs. Censorship does not work; education does. If we continue down this path, we will find ourselves regulated like autocracies, governed by mediocrity, and informed by algorithms designed in fear. And the bitter irony? We will be unable to look up the history of our mistake—because Wikipedia will not load.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiblH7EscZc

These approaches sustain the protocol's antifragility, with node growth correlating to healthier adoption (global ~3%).
Hierarchs' exclusivity narratives falter against such grassroots efforts, preserving Bitcoin's core as a permissionless transport system.
