In my experience, Amtrak coach seats are comfortable enough to sleep in. There's plenty of space between coach rows so the chairs can be tilted pretty far back. I was able to sleep fine two nights in a row. That was on the Chicago to Seattle line; maybe coach is worse on other lines?
