I certainly would not assume that the problem has already been solved in pieces and that an LLM will put it together. Sure, LLMs have done that a couple of times, and impressively. But there are a lot more problems that they have not solved, so I don't see the logic in assuming they would solve the specific problem that makes this business not really that viable.

The takeaway: the big AI companies are making ludicrous claims that are totally falsifiable about what their products will do to the job market. The incentive structure is such that creating fear around their products will make them loads of money.

I've heard that general take before, and it has felt intuitively true, but it's awesome to see someone provide evidence that the claims about job replacement are impossible without a quantum leap in energy generation etc.

I've always thought of time division as akin to numbers themselves -- when we divide anything (time, space, ??) into equal parts, we have a way to interface with it that suits our cognitive tendencies and limitations. (Why? Ummm...I don't know.)

Even distribution also creates a consistent rigidity that's incredibly practical, e.g. a sewn seam.

It's the second year of my food garden. I've greatly expanded this year by adding an in-ground bed.

While things are going pretty well, everything hasn't seemed quite as charmed as last year. I've had a lot more pests to deal with this year for some reason.

Still, it feels like a gift to be able to get outside for a couple of hours a day and have a clear task to do. (And one that will feed me, even!)

Overall I feel like AMD graphics and maybe even chips these days have better Linux support. Although I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to argue with me about that. 🤣

That tool is AMAZING in its depth and specificity, but I'm a little less picky than that at this point, and would love something with an interface (GUI or terminal) that makes selecting things and editing metadata a little easier.

I can't agree with this more. I was just telling an IRL friend yesterday that the people of the #Fediverse have become really important to me, to my delight and surprise. I live in a relatively rural place and don't have a lot of music friends here, and I didn't realize how hard that was until you lovely people relieved some of that pressure with your wit, experience, and great conversation.

VERY excited to perform my first real gardening task of 2026: germinating native perennial seeds!

This is only my second year starting seeds. Last year I did vegetables (and will do again!), and I wanted to add some perennials to my seed starting setup this year.

These seeds require 60 days of cold, moist germination. After the steps in the photos, they went into the refrigerator!

Would be thrilled to get any advice from veterans/people who are slightly less new to this!

I read this post this morning as well and almost shared it. I have the same problem as Winnie and this could be a way to rewire my brain a bit.

What particularly resonated with me was the idea that you don't need to pressure yourself to go back to your notes and have them be perfectly organized. Or indeed, you don't have to go back to everything at all!

That's kinda how I already use my obsidian vault, but I do still feel the organizing pressure.

laptops w/ Nvidia are tough to deal with, for sure. I recently sold my big laptop w/ Nvidia graphics because of Linux problems (and I didn't really need a powerful laptop). I got a tower made by System76 w/ all AMD everything, and have had ZERO issues, also using Ubuntu Studio. Not saying that's a reasonable option, but just as a reference point!

The wine/yabridge thing will be a problem on any distro.

Debian is probably the most hassle-free distro if you don't need the latest!
