Having conquered the other addictions I am able to recognize 1) that I had crossed that invisible line into full addictions and moderation was no longer a possibility for me 2) that being addicted in this way was messing with my mental peace and spiritual connection. There is a lot of cognitive dissonance that comes from desiring to limit or stop doing something, then giving in and doing it anyway. Not good for the self esteem. <br/><br/>If you would have asked me a week ago I would have told you I still wasn’t willing to give up my favorite vice, coffee… but one of my mentors in recovery broached the subject and recommended this book, and after listening to it, I just had the overwhelming desire to be free from this addiction. <br/><br/>I’ve seen the value in getting that freedom in my life. It is absolutely worth the sacrifice. But nobody is ready until they are ready. I just hit a point of desperation and enough is enough.<br/><br/>Physically, I’m hoping to get rid of some relatively new feelings of anxiety, to stop triggering migraines, and to maybe balance out my minerals and electrolytes to get rid of horrific cramping in my feet and legs at night. We also started fermenting the feed. 5 cups each day on a 3-day fermenting cycle (for 15 birds). Plus they get some kitchen scraps and have a large fenced off area of yard to roam. The chickens love the fermented feed. <br/><br/>I got behind last week and just gave them some food with water added the same day. They wouldn’t eat it. They will eat it dry, but they pick out their favorite bits and make a mess of the rest.<br/><br/>They still act like they are hungry, but I’m 99% sure that’s just what chickens do. There will be a slight air gap from the metal cages, but that could be increased by attaching 1 x lumber along the top and bottom to screw the metal to. I’m thinking just screw the metal to the cages and move on. We managed to get all 10 wicking beds ready and filled with soil today. I did a layering method with different soil ingredients. One or two 5 gallon buckets at a time, then used my hands to kind of claw-twist the layers together. Yes, that’s a technical term. <br/><br/>We used a combo of repurposed sifted soil from our previous raised beds, soil from some in-ground beds, one small layer of top soil mixed with a bit of our clay soil, rabbit poop, worm castings, semi-shredded leaves from fall, perlite, one bag of Black Kow per bed, a little DE because there were a few fire ants in the mix, repeat repeat repeat. We left about 3-4 inches at the top for mulch. We mulched with leaves.<br/><br/>We’re still filling them with water now. About half pressure from the hose and it takes 40 minutes per bed to fill.<br/><br/>Next step is to make them pretty. I think we are also going to add a layer of insulation before we clad them with metal.<br/><br/>Hubs is down an arm so he plumbed the overflows while I shoveled. We didn’t end up getting the recommended bulkhead fittings because of cost, but manages to cobble together some less expensive PVC pieces.
