Every time I start a repair, I dread that this will be the one that will have me stumped and make me look stupid for even trying. I am of the opinion that forums were the beginning of the end of the open and decentralised internet. Forums were the first step towards the closed walled gardens that are the norm nowadays.

Also, forums need the web, and the web is dead, beyond rescue. It's a cyberpunk hellscape that I personally want to have as little as possible to do with.

Yes, this is possible, and actually happens. Servers peer with each other and that peering may or may not be unconditional. There are hierarchies I only share with certain peers because that's policy for those hierarchies vs public hierarchies that are shared with all peers.

I also have a private hierarchy just for users on my server that I don't distribute to any of my peers.

As for monetisation, there are commercial servers that carry full hierarchies including the binary groups and they typically charge for accounts. There's also lots of servers, like mine, that only carry text-only groups. I don't charge anything. I'll give out free accounts to anyone I know and trust. There's also servers that give out free accounts to basically anyone, some even over tor or other overlay networks.

Myself and most of my peers actually only carry the text-only newsgroups and not the binary groups. Once you start carrying the binary groups it'll explode quickly, but if you keep to the text-only groups it's reasonably manageable.

The servers I'm peering with are mostly just hobbyists like myself.

You don't really need a server of course, to get back into it. A newsreader and an account with eternal-september.org or one of the other free providers will do for most people.

Of course, if like me you're a bit of a self-hosting obsessive, hosting your own newsnet server is great :)

I just checked, I started my current server about half a year ago iirc, and it's 4.3GB of articles so far. One can always expire articles after a while if one wants to conserve disk space. Well, it depends. There's different hierarchies. There's the big-8 hierarchies (comp.*, humanities.*, misc.*, news.*, rec.*, sci.*, soc.*, and talk.*) there there is some attempt at keeping things orderly. Then there's the alt.* hierarchie, which is pure anarchy. Just create a new group in the alt.* hierarchy and many servers will happily pick it up and forward articles posted in it.

Other than that, anyone can basically create a hierarchy and push that out to their peers. I basically accept whatever hierarchies my peers push to me (except for the binary groups, I don't have the resources for those).

Other server operators may be more restrictive. In the end it's about what you and your peers agree upon (explicitly or implicitly).

There's even little 'islands' of hierarchies that are only shared between a restricted set of peers, a bit like 'island networks' on the fediverse really.

Well, first of all, there's still new groups being created, so they aren't already populated by said greybeards. It also depends what groups you subscribe to. If you insist, you can absolutely find groups where greybeards lament eternel september. But no-one is forcing you to subscribe to those groups.

But even some of the older groups have new influx.

The space is massive of course. I've got 45k+ newsgroups *listed* on my usenet server, 42k+ if you discount the binary groups. Some are just wastelands of spam and propaganda, others are completely dead. There's the 'greybeard' groups, and then there's groups you thought were dead until you post and you start an interesting discussion that has nothing to do with eternal september :)

Basically, it's what you make of it.

While thinking about what to do after my current contract ends, I keep coming back to the fact that I'd really like a EU-based alternative for lets encrypt. Don't get me wrong, let's encrypt is fantastic, but it's US based and thus subject to US laws, which might pose a problem for the continuity of the usage of their services outside of the US.

Let's say I were to start a project to do this, write a plan, get initial funding, maybe a few (paid) people to help out with this, would there be interest? Would it be worth it?

Would you want to use it? Could you even think of donating, or maybe know of some companies or organisations who would be inclined to go into a sponsorship relation?

I think it might be very welcome, and it is worth trying, but I'd like a reality check please :)

Surprisingly, you have to be a much better programmer than these days with powerful IDEs. On those early machines you had to really plan out your program, because you can't easily refactor to a great extent. Especially not on the P2000, which has no renumber command.

Oddly, it's the first time in a very long time that I enjoyed coding again.

The pinball community at large is unfortunately not a very inclusive community. I've seen plenty of racism, sexism and queerphobia at pinball events, including within the Dutch Pinball Association, where I was a very active member. I remember one meeting / brainstorm about the future of the association where one of the subjects was 'attracting a more diverse audience'. When I brought up diversity, it turned out they were mostly interested in bringing in younger players, not poc, queer or women. I was laughed away by board members.

Mind you, there's a lot of exceptions and a lot of good people in the community as well. I've worked with many of them organising big tournaments. Still, in the community at large, all the isms are, if not encouraged, at least tolerated.

Personally, I just stopped going to events, the fun to be had wasn't outweighed by constantly having to be prepared for abusive language and derogatory comments. I'm still a somewhat active member of the Dutch Pinball Association (even though I don't live in The Netherlands anymore), but I've become wary of gatherings.

The fact that in reply to your post you got a 'don't take away my points, it's not worth it' from @mattlqx shows you where the community's priorities are. Instead of making a stand against intolerance, they are more interested in their personal standings.

Those are not professional programmers.

We're both surprised at how fast it is compared to more traditional centralised chat apps like Signal. It's so cool to be able to self-host this and not rely on centralised infrastructure that is outside of my control.

The fediverse is awesome. I ask the fediverse to reshare/boost a post in an ill-conceived plan to increase the federation reach of my newly setup friendica server, and boy did the fediverse deliver. 983 reshares and counting.

Of course, resharing/boosting doesn't increase the federation, I know that know thanks to the polite and helpful tips I got in response.

And I did get a bunch of followers as well, which *does* help federation. I'm sorry I can't follow all of you back, if there's non-CW-ed images of world leaders and front-page news on your timeline, I have to decline to protect my mental health.

And on top of it all, only one single reply-guy with a snarky comment that I'm doing it all wrong and am an idiot. Easily blocked.
