no arguments from me here - all the Voigtlander ones are amazing. The original 28mm Color Skopar is one of my favourite lenses of all time; the new version is an absolute bargain considering the performance.

Just bear in mind that the originals from the early 2000s are prone to irremovable haze - it’s an issue with the cements used. The new LTM ones (this 40mm Heliar and the new 28/2.8 Color Skopar) won’t have this issue.

Industar 22: great lens, won't focus correctly (back focuses about 10cm at the 1m mark).
Summar: incredible lens, probably my favourite in LTM. Hard to find one in good shape: front element is often shredded. Uncoated, will require a hood. SOOMP is the correct hood, FISON is cheaper and more compact.
Summitar (ref. Jack (npub12xx…auy0)): not bad. Uncoated and coated variations. Not as interesting as a Summar, not as "good" as a Summicron, more awkward for filters and hoods than both.

The only thing to consider is that once vulcanite starts chipping, it often continues doing so. And while the Barnack body design is very resistant to light leaks, there is one patch (around the slow speed dial) that can be problematic if the vulcanite drops off!

Dipping back into the SLR world with the Edixa Flex just made me remember why I love rangefinders so much: I can't focus anything as easily as I can a screwmount Leica. That 1.5x rangefinder is just a joy to use. I don't mind the framing vagueness or accessory viewfinders - at least I can focus confidently!

That said, I'm so all-in on the idea that I actually bought a special shelving unit just for viewfinders. That's when you know you're committed to the bit...

Honestly? The loading system isn't as bad as people make out. Once you know how to cut a leader and load it, it's no harder than any other camera - and a lot more reliable than the various "quick load" systems in SLRs.

I cut the leaders on every film I buy now. I have nine different bottom loaders and the cameras which aren't can still take the long leader, so it's no big deal. It takes five seconds per film, max.

I've just finished roll 50 on my IIIg. The IIIf is at 112 rolls so far. Admittedly, I've had it for longer, but it's just so much more versatile - it's way more adaptable with all sorts of widgets.

The IIIg viewfinder is miles better, though. That's without question!

I do quite like the III - I wasn't expecting to, to be honest - but the IIIf is the one to go for if you're buying into the screwmount Leica world and want just one body to rule them all. It's a lot quicker to use due to the arrangement of the eyepieces, you get 1/1000 (the III stops at 1/500), click-stopped slow speeds, and fully adjustable flash sync.

(The IIIg is nice too but costs 2-3x the price of a IIIf, and the IIIc loses the flash sync and often has lower-quality chroming.)

I sent these two Leicas to "my guy" a couple of months ago, and they just returned home. The Ic on the left has had two brand new shutter curtains, and the III on the right just had a general service. Both are running beautifully now; I'm going to load up the Ic in a mo and put a test roll through it to check for issues.

I've really missed this weird little rangefinderless (and viewfinderless) camera. I never thought it'd be my favourite #Leica, but here we are.

I've gotten tired of stressing about various bits of #Leica paraphernalia rattling around in my camera bag, so I borrowed my girlfriend's sewing machine and set about making some drawstring bags for them all this evening - including a multi-compartment one to hold all the various sections of a CEYOO flash gun.

Honestly, one of the most satisfying evenings I've had in years. Not bad for someone who hasn't touched a sewing machine since school!

He’s always been into computers, but he’s used nothing but MS-DOS and #Windows since the 90s, and resisted change at every turn.

Last month he called me up to ask me about #Linux, package managers, and “the terminal”. He’s now installing Linux Mint on his friends’ computers so they don’t have to throw out perfectly good computers because Windows 11 won’t support them.

I've managed to fix a lot of stuff over the years, but shutters tend to be where I draw the line. I've never managed to get a focal plane shutter running correctly myself and leaf shutters are a bit more of a mixed bag.

I suspect this just needs a full clean and relubricate, but that needs doing properly - i.e. full disassembly, not just flushing. Even most "technicians" don't bother doing that.

Last of the #Edixa photos for now: in the same auction, I also got this Yashica-Mat for an absolute bargain. Optically, it's in good shape, but I found out mid-test roll that the shutter was hanging open at 1/2 a second. I tried exercising it, and now it hangs open at anything below 1/60. Urgh.

But at least it looks pretty.

Test roll from the Edixa Flex is in the film condom. No film transport issues, no obvious light leaks, both electronic flash and bulb flash appears to be sync’d correctly, and I can’t see any obvious exposure issues.

The proof will be in the scanning, but this looks amazingly promising. As to whether I can accurately focus without a rangefinder… that might be a totally different question.

Update: took the lens out for testing today. Just boring test shots on digital, nothing exciting. But focus is bang-on, colour rendering is decent, sharpness is good, and no flare without a hood. All the fungus I scrubbed off doesn't seem to have affected anything! I'll chalk this one up as a win.

And now for more #Leica neurosis: I got this Canon LTM 50/1.8 in a job lot last year. It turned up RADDLED with fungus - completely unusable. On Monday night I finally took it apart and thoroughly cleaned everything - it came up lovely, but the focus was way out. Tonight I've sat and cut some shims out of greaseproof paper and tin foil and found the perfect combination so it 100% agrees with the rangefinder in a Leica.

Arduous, but satisfying.

I'm not sure if it's really that much faster than the Plustek - there's a lot more active labour involved in camera-scanning, and the results for 35mm are very comparable.

But against the Canoscan? It's a no-brainer. Even an entry-level mirrorless camera from 2015 would do better.

Just for perspective, here's the new Leica-derived scan of this photo side-by-side with what I thought this photo looked like for the last twelve years.

And yes, a Leica M240 is a *lot* more expensive than the Canoscan 9000F I used to use, but you don't *need* to go straight to £2.5k full frame cameras to get this performance. Friends don't let friends use flatbed scanners to digitise film in 2025.

One from the archives: I took this photo of my mum back in 2012, not long after I bought my first Leica. I remember being amazed that I could shoot a 35mm f/3.5 lens in such low light without a tripod and get basically no shutter shake at all! It was a big step up from the SLRs, FEDs, and Zorkis I'd been using.

Revisiting it to "scan" it with a digital Leica now and seeing so much more detail has amazed me all over again.

I actually meant linocut. I have lith on the brain because one of the things I printed last night was shot on XP2 and the first straight print was so contrasty it looked like a lith print. Absolutely absurd. Ended up with a 1min 40sec exposure with a 0 grade filter at f/8 PLUS 1.5sec of pre-flashing with the enlarger at f/22 just to get some tonality into the white areas.

Burned through far too much paper figuring that out.

Sometimes atmospheric haze can almost work in your favour. I always quite liked the way the different hills are given different tones to the different amount of haze they're viewed behind in this one.

Still: carry a yellow filter. You don't have to (and shouldn't) use it all the time, but goddamn, you'll kick yourself when you need one and don't have it.

Before I started using rangefinders, I used TLRs almost exclusively. I actually learned how to expose film properly with a TLR, but I've barely even touched one for about a decade; that's mostly because the only way I had to scan 120 film, a Canoscan, *sucked*. Now I've got a camera-scanning rig dialled in, I can go back and scan some old negs like this one from 2013 and actually get decent scans from them!

Yeah, I've worked that way a few times, and for that scenario, ExifTool is great.

However, I have found that it can be a bit erratic about how it assigns lens and camera info to the files. Not sure why. Time, date, exposure info, GPS? Works fine. But camera and lens? Not so much.

And, of course, if you're working fast and not logging every exposure, you won't have the data to copy over via ExifTool. That's where AnalogExif comes in - just highlight all, assign lens, click save.

After last night's unwanted SD card formatting, I used some commercial software to try to recover the images. It found and recovered 17 ORFs (Olympus' proprietary RAW files).

Another go with some other software found 352 ORFs, but wanted £74 to save them.

So I've turned to PhotoRec, a #FOSS command line util - https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec - and it's found 237 ORFs already with about 50 minutes to go.

The lesson? Learn to use Terminal. It'll save you a fortune AND you'll get more done.

I was about to say "TLRs give you most of the benefits of a medium format SLR without the weight" and then remembered how heavy the C220 is!

Agreed, though. There's a damn good reason TLRs were *the* press camera for such a long time. Comparatively compact but impressively good optics. Even the lowly Lubitel is capable of amazing things, and you use to be able to pick those up for a tenner!

Continued adventures in "camera" scanning, episode 2,354: I think I've shown this thing on here before; Leica made it to copy negatives and photograph small details in the 1930s and 40s. You can only use it with a 50mm Elmar, but thanks to an LTM-to-M adapter, it works perfectly fine with a digital M.

I had one very, *very* dusty frame on the last roll I scanned (with a Plustek), so thought I'd use this to "rescan" it; worked a treat. Not bad for 1930s tech!

Continued adventures in "camera" scanning, episode 637: I've not been really happy with anything "scanned" with my X-Pro 2. The corners looked smeary, and I was putting that down to the cameras I'd shot with, as I didn't know the performance of them too well.

Now I've shot something with a Yashica TLR I know like the back of my hand, I did some testing.

Yep, it's all the X-Pro's fault. The Leica M240 does a much nicer job with the same lens. Not sure why!

Ah! That is more appropriate than you realise. There's some speculation online that the Trinol, like the 105mm "mountain Elmar", was originally designed for use on medium format but fitted to a mount for Leica. Two reasons: 1, there's strong mechanical vignetting at f/3.5, suggesting this mount is a bit of a cludge (see the attached test shot from my M240), and 2, the lens head and mount were made in two different places (the head in Leicester, the mount in Scotland)

It depends a bit on how the lens is made. Soviet rangefinder lenses are usually incredibly easy to service - this required backing out three grub screws, removing the close-focus stop, and then it just came apart.

If you can get to that point, it's a dirty job, but simple enough. I use bike degreaser and Q-tips followed by an old toothbrush, then a final clean with rubbing alcohol or methylated spirits. Once it's clean, just regrease with your grease of choice and reassemble.

Someone was just getting rid of this because - as typically happens with old Soviet lenses - the grease in the focusing helical had dried to old beeswax and it was impossible to focus.

During the course of two episodes of the X-Files tonight, I polished off some of the tarnishing, cleaned out the helical threads, and regreased it.

It is beautiful now.

This feels very, *very* satisfying.

I think I probably get more "keepers" per shot with a 135mm than anything else. I don't use them often, but when I need one, nothing does the job better.

In this case, I turned the corner, saw the framing, and was glad I still had the 135mm on my Leica; sometimes that extra distance is just what you need.

It's a fun ongoing challenge for me to find new ways to frame it.

I realised a bit too late tonight that I almost missed the start of the #ArtAdventCalendar.

Sadly, this year hasn't been a good one for me; it seemed like a lot went wrong. It felt like everything was broken, crumbling, or failing, and my photographic "output" noticeably dropped as a result.

Thanks to the wonder that is the PSP Go's suspend feature, I've managed to keep this one game of Dr Mario going so long that I've now maxed out not only the clock, but the level counter, too (this is level 100). I'm half-tempted to keep going until I max out the score counter as well.

I love 220. I wish there were more options available for it - I shot some Shanghai GP3 in 220 earlier this year and it felt so liberating to get an extra 12 shots out of it without reloading.

A5: this was shot on a roll of Pan F+ someone gave me a long time ago. It was the first time I'd ever used a 50ISO film, and it not only convinced me that I could handhold shots at such a low ISO in lower light quite easily, but made me fall in love with Pan F+. It's a very special film, and I don't think I'd have ever tried it if someone hadn't given me a roll.

I spent tonight working with DNGs for the first time - with all the Fuji X-bodies I've owned, I just worked with OOC JPEGs, but I feel like owning a digital #Leica and *not* playing with DNGs seems like a waste.

Not to toot my own horn, but this one feels... okay, I guess? It's not a great shot and the lighting was hellish, but the DNG edit definitely looks better than the OOC JPG.

I'm still not sold on this whole "digital #photography" thing, though. It'll never catch on.

This is funny, because I tend to find Foma - at least developed in Rodinal - handles wide tonal range much better than FP4+ does. Meter for the shadows, and the highlights always look good with Fomapan - whereas I often lose them on FP4+.

This photo has been in my unedited folder for months; I finally cleaned it up last night, and I thought while I was doing so that I'd used a yellow filter for this shot. Then I checked my notes and realised I couldn't have done, as the VC 15mm Super Wide Heliar doesn't have filter threads. It's just Fomapan 100 doing Fomapan things.

I love the tonal range of this film, I really do.
