I just swapped my main and backup Matrix accounts, from now, the one on Unredacted homeserver (Fossery Tech :debian: :gnome: (npub1jz9…4xmq):unredacted.org) will be the main one, which I'll use, the Linux.Pizza one (Fossery Tech :debian: :gnome: (npub1jz9…4xmq):linux.pizza) will be the backup account, which I won't check that often.

The reason behind the change is that the Linux.Pizza homeserver is down quite frequently for a few days (like it's the case right now), or has issues loading earlier messages

(I upgraded a few days ago (I have the Phosh edition), and for some reason, the welcome app appears for a few seconds, then a lock screen with the default wallpaper instead of the one I set, then when I unlock the phone, it looks like as if it crashes, the GUI disappears for a few seconds, then it comes back, unlocked successfully. It only does this after boot, if I lock the screen back, everything is normal, no crash, and the wallpaper is what I set. Not the end of the world for me, but it's a bit weird, might annoy some.)

Some work on FosseryWeb page-builders:
I did some rewrite of the tool, separate out HTML templates from the generation logic, and use Jinja to fill in the templates during generation (this introduces an additional dependency, which some might consider bloat, but since I'll probably be the only one using it, it doesn't matter that much I guess, I rather focus on cleaner code, long-term maintainability). I also created a separate function to handle the Markdown validation logic, and call it before prompting for the description, to give immediate feedback, and rewrote the error messages to be clearer, more organized.

In the announcement post of last week's major update I asked whether the original site should have rounded, slighly rounded, or edged corners, all three options received one vote, so I decided to go with the middleground, the slightly rounded corners. I also updated the Timeline page to include last week's major update and the design change, fixed metadata on the Min site's cheatsheet pages (where the title said FosseryWeb instead of FosseryWeb Min), updated the "tools I use" section on About page.

Minor update to my Joplin config:
Joplin recently got an update where F11 got mapped to toggling fullscreen by default, which conflicted with my setting of toggling the note list, so I decided to modify toggling sidebar (notebook list) to F2 and toggling note list to F3, to ensure the two keys are next to each other, and don't conflict with any default setting.

The only tedious part is adding publish date to articles, because it requires including timezone which can be tricky (at least here in Europe because if the daylight saving thing), but I wrote a simple Python script which handles that. The last changes for the next (last) big update are pushed to the beta branch: Download buttons renamed to Export (to better reflect the functionality when the site is run locally), Articles became the first entry on the home page (since that will be the only section which will receive new content after the update), "Export all" options available for Java cheatsheets, Privacy Policy added, some "Related content" links are fixed.

The update will probably be merged into the main branch on Tuesday, after some testing.

well, I'm not really familiar with Hugo, not sure how much it allows to customize the HTML boilerplate, usage of tags, etc., but even if it's customizable it would probably require some time to learn. I already have my own custom tool for page generation, so the part of the problem Hugo would solve I already solved. The maintainability problem can't really be solved by any generator though

Creating cheatsheets myself is even more time consuming, it takes away time from other stuff (e.g. writing articles about various topics, which I also promised earlier).

So yeah, overall, the project isn't really sustainable in the long run, plus I promised too many things, much more than what I'm actually able to do. I changed my mind, and I won't accept any cheatsheet, article submissions, plus I won't make any more cheatsheets either. As for articles, I'll continue doing those, and making them available on FosseryWeb (except I won't create a "HTML/CSS tips and tricks" category, I'll only write about Linux, FOSS, digital freedom topics as usual). The things which are already available on the beta branch (Java cheatsheets, option to switch between original and Min site), plus some of the already scheduled things (Privacy Policy, RSS feed for articles, guide to use the site offline) will still make it into the last big update, along with the code refactorings and updated browser compatibility info. After the update, I'll also extend the new page-builders tool to generate article pages, to make uploading my articles to the site(s) more convenient.

Now, despite continuing only the writing of articles, I still can't really guarantee that I'll have much more time for those, as I have a few other things too which I want to do, e.g. changing my system setup, Debian to Devuan, GNOME to a tiling WM, it would probably take quite a lot of time to set up everything how I want, during that time, I probably won't do much "content creation" other than the weekly news posts.

TL;DR: FosseryWeb will become mostly unmaintained after pushing some of the already planned, WIP features/content. Only the articles section will be maintained.

You may have noticed that FosseryWeb development became extremely slow in the past few months, and you have to wait ages until I add the features, content you requested. Well, I feel like the codebase overgrew me, the site becomes harder and harder to maintain, as it becomes bigger and bigger. Producing cheatsheets and articles makes it grow pretty rapidly. Producing much of these content isn't really viable in the long run for a static site like FosseryWeb (Min), because if I want to change the code structure, I have to go over each page's HTML file one-by-one (although I could use client-side JS to eliminate some of the duplicate code, but it still wouldn't fully solve the issue because I can't store the full HTML code in JS, and it would also ruin the experience for many of you, who block JS in your browser). The ideal solution would be a dynamic web app, which I already experimented with earlier (see my Java/Spring endeavor: https://social.linux.pizza/@fosserytech/114422738214988335), but it's literally impossible to find a FOSS hosting service with a reasonable Privacy Policy for dynamic sites (unfortunately Codeberg Pages is only for static sites), and I don't have my own server to host a site.

I also promised to release a contribution guide, to make the project a collaborative effort, to speed up development a bit, allow anyone to write articles, produce cheatsheets. I'm already half done with the guide, including most of the rules to follow, but in the past weeks, I thought about it a lot, whether I'll be able to keep up with reviewing all the cheatsheet, article submissions, and the more I think about it, the more I realize that I want a bit too much. I barely have enough free time. I only have about 1-2 hours a day to do anything outside my university studies on weekdays, so I might not have enough time to review all submissions, pull requests, especially if the site becomes more popular in the future (which may never be the case, but who knows)

(The `git history reword` command is pretty cool, sometimes I realize that I made a typo in the commit message, or pressed the up key in the terminal a few times because I'm lazy to type the commit command, then forgot to edit the commit message, being able to edit the commit message can be really handy in these cases)
(The split command can also be pretty useful, sometimes I forget to commit the changes after I did a specific thing (implemented a feature, or fixed a bug), because my brain is a few steps ahead, and really wants to do this and that extra thing, and then I can't really write a meaningful but short commit message because the commit does too many things, splitting a commit is actually a pretty good fix for this.)
(Now the only thing missing is the option to merge a commit with its parent, so when I go retard and commit a bug fix, and realize afterwards that it didn't actually fix the bug (or at least not fully), there don't have to be 2 commits with the same "fix xy bug" message lol)

FreeTube also received some UI revamp: new video player (also somewhat similar to YouTube's), some text changed to first letter uppercase instead of all uppercase, icons added to subscription page
(Why does everyone copy YouTube's video player? It looks kinda ugly... Also, the bottom panel's buttons are barely visible if the video is bright. Odysee's new video player at least has a darker background for those buttons)

yeah, corporate-backed projects basically always become corrupt sooner or later, we've seen this with Mozilla and others. On the other hand, the Linux ecosystem as a whole would be in a much worse state, because there would be much less capacity to make Linux daily drivable, most people would be forced into the Windows/Mac ecosystem to get the work done, which would be even worse

Actually, it isn't Flathub but Flatpak itself bending the knee via the xdg-desktop-portal thing, so it also affects Flatpaks from other sources (e.g. the ones builded manually with flatpak-builder) sadly. I wish there was another sandboxed format with that level of permission control. I like to have sandboxing and easily manageable permission system (which some call the "phone approach" and consider it a negative thing, I don't really get why, I didn't hear any clear, reasonable explanation from anyone) for programs which connect to the internet, for privacy reasons. I looked at Firejail earlier, but it didn't seem to have as finegrained permission system as Flatpak

But at least Flatpak can easily be removed from basically any system (except for maybe the immutable ones), while the init system can't really be changed on most systems

It sounds even better now, after this many years, now that I can actually relate with the lyrics. I'm getting "old" (only in my twenties but still lol) I guess.

I know, for most people I hear talking about music, only the songs of 80s and 90s are good, but I draw the line in 2018-2019. Even songs in those years were much better than 2020s music for the most part. New music in the past few years all sound the same to me (with a few exceptions, but there are fewer and fewer exceptions as years pass, I ended up listening to new songs from only 2 artists, but even one of them has pretty mediocre music this year). Or maybe I'm just getting old, "boomership" kicks in, idk lol

But also, I miss those times when life was much easier... "Those were the days", as the linked song says. I actually start to understand the older generation saying things used to be much better
