Tried out the effects of altitude training. We had to hide from some bad weather in the high Pyrenees and do some admin. So we took shelter in the low lands. Very humid and I took a wrong turn and missed out on 1km of planned distance. I think it was a correct turn as the off road bits was either sticky mud farm land or very overgrown paths, wet waist high grass, which was hard work, though the boy loves the tall grass. Watch said it would take 2h50m, I guesstimated 2h30m and I came in at 2h15m which I'm very happy about. And I planned departure correctly, as it started to rain as I got back to HQ.

Followed the snow shoes route around this ski station started 1700m with an easy downhill down through the trees to 1450m and then a brutal uphill up to 1810m which opened up out to stunning views of the mountains. There was just enough snow for a zoomie from Paddy in one remaining drift. Arrived back at HQ and the griffon vultures arrived, are they expecting me to collapse into a heap? ;)

I hope the hive mind can help with finding a book for me. Many moons ago, back in the late 80s I think it was. I'm very sure I heard this story on Danish radio. Set in Sweden a child with divorced parents had to travel between them by flying back and forth from northern and southern Sweden. Back then you could "hand over" a child to the airport and flight staff for them to accompany the children to the destination. In the story the staff had help someone urgently and parked the child (main character) at a check in desk. This was where everything went wrong for the parents and staff but the adventure started. As the child took a handful of the tags that the children got to show where they were going. And they would swap these tags around so it say LAX, LHR, JFK etc. as they got put onto different flights around the world.

Am I dreaming or is this really a book?

Managed to get out and run before the HOT hit, 26c due today. Though not as much running as hoped since a recent storm has washed away most of the 3km downhill path. That I had hoped to enjoy running. It was just a steep "valley" with lose stone sides, that gave way nearly with every step, and the bottom was narrower than my foot. Had to navigate to a forest road using an animal track which Paddy enjoyed. Tomorrow it will be cooler and we will go hide somewhere the snow isn't due to fall.

Well my asphaltphobia of tarmac didn't get cured today. First time in 2 years of running I get an injury and of course it happened on the dreaded flat, smooth and boring road surface. Somehow I landed wrong with my right leg and pulled something above my knee which sent pain round to the back of the leg and right up to my gluteus sexius, as the lass calls it ;)

Good news, I was thinking about walking the last 2k as Paddy boy was looking a bit hot under the collar... well more his black fur... so the run wasn't too ruined. And I still managed to get back to HQ in under two hours as I had hoped to do the run in.

Otherwise it was a good run and we crossed paths with two lads on mountain bikes a few times and we were greeted with friendly big smiles every time.

Now stretching and relaxing and feeding.

The joy of rescue dogs, wee Miss MoneyPenny the wild scavenger that she is, managed to find and eat something. She is double fast and it's nearly impossible to stop her if she sees some bread, olives or cat/rabbit poop etc. Gone before we blink. Her Thursday "snack" clearly didn't agree with her and she emptied herself a few times during the night in our HQ, so not much sleep. Which ment we had to take her to a vet yesterday to make sure that she wasn't poisoned, as she looked and behaved very sickly. Drugs given and to be given over the next few days, crossing fingers.

I, therefore didn't get to do the planned long run yesterday, but today got a run in amongst the olive and almond trees. Spring have really spun here in southern Spain.

The wind finally died down and we had the total difference weather conditions to what they had at the Barkley Marathons. 5km down hill on a rail trail, then 400m up over 2.5km, on a trail trough the forest (that tested the legs a bit), then the rest downhill on a quiet lane back to HQ. Saw a squirrel, a red footed bird of some sort and a tail less cat.

Detours was today's theme. First one was just a few fallen trees that send us on to a path that went straight around two big hunting dog kennels. Detour two was picked, which ended here, see attached picture. Google Satellite and OpenSteetMap had nothing about this, looked like the rest of the area. Which was a spiders web of trails on the ground, some marked with posts/arrows and few of them on the maps. So detour three was picked while I was singing along to Talking Head's (Nothing but) Flowers and having a good old time. It also got me thinking about the brilliant movie The Emerald Forest (1985) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emerald_Forest Shorter run than planned but what a nice area to run in.

As much as I hate tarmac I was glad for it today. We had a spot of rain over night and Spanish soil doesn't half stick when it is just a bit moist. It's nearly to the ratio of 2 steps to 100g of mud. And trying to stomp it off only glues it more to your shoes. The choice to stay on tarmac were also "helped" by the bangs and barking dogs coming from the direction the trails would take us.

This time of year we do get some good views, fog in rolling valleys. But in rural Spain this often includes men in hi-viz orange with boom sticks and loose packs of dogs, shooting at anything that moves by the sound we woke up too. When it had calmed down, I ventured out into the olive groves, with my ears and eyes on high alert. Any sound we stopped, looked for orange and listening out for barking. Lucky the most we encountered was a 4x4 with a trailer full of barking dogs, a few tracks over going away from us.

Woke up, took the mutts for their morning constitution in beautiful blue skies and sunshine. Put the kettle on for my breakfast looked out the window and couldn't see more that a few meters through the fog. Started to get ready for a run as the fog cleared to reveal that some hunters had rocked up with about 12 lose dogs ...

So after a small relocation I managed to run around an area where early humans have lived in caves and Paddy wasn't too sure about running through a waterfall that was flowing over the path.

Hmmm on the 3rd of January 2026, I might do something stupid.

I know I've said it here that I don't really like the idea of the public and organised events. Along with that I don't run for Splits, PB or Pace I run for time spent outside.

So with that said, I might sign on to partake in this run https://www.thedramathon.com/the-event/the-full-dram/ ;)

This is the first run I've seen that don't have the perceived pressure of a mass run, that I hate the idea off. Looks like a jolly fun, in a lovely location, not on dreaded road/tarmac, and it includes something I enjoy now and again.

I know I've done a HM with 200m more up, than this Full Dram, in 3h45m, with the 40+ stiles, gates and livestock to navigate. I'm sure if I didn't have to deal with that, I could probably do the run in 3 hours and if it was flatter I could probably squeeze in under 3 hours.

If I do, I got 10 months to get more time into my legs and do longer runs. Dropping about 5kg would help too. I know from my cycling days how to fuel and what my body needs/wants and can handle when doing long distances, so that's not a learning curve.

The biggest problem is that I'm not allowed to bring my running partner and I know that will feel weird.

So, should I do it?

After yesterday's battle of great bottled goodies, I was surprised that I managed to clock in a one hour 8km. This is what flat tarmac does to your running. My normal routes and terrain tend to be around 5km for an hours running. Sadly this part of Belgium it's not a done thing to say hello to others, I think the "score" was about 3 out of 10 nodded back, else it was just a blank stare back. I even tried Mojn, 'ow'do, Guten tag and a cheery wave.

Bit of an emotional run today. We went up to a hilltop behind the town were we used to live and often walked our beloved Tilley there. She loved the last stile as she knew that she would be able to run off lead. I miss you wee girl.

We got a nice greeting once back down, two young ladies saw Paddy the Irish mutt and went - oh he is gorgeous (said in a strong Yorkshire accent ;) )

My granddad was part of the Danish resistance and had to flee to Sweden when the German Nazis came for him. He was warned by a neighbour as the Germans came up the street. This year I learned that he managed to enter Denmark a few times while working with the resistance, we don't know how he did it and what he did doring these years. He was in the Danish army in Sweden and in the second wave of the Danish liberation, when Nazi Germany capitiulated, but some soldiers didn't get the memo in Copenhagen. He then worked as a guard at one of the biggest prisoner camps in Denmark, before he walked, nearly 300km, with the German soldiers /prisoners to the border to send them home to Germany.

Today I watched Under Sandet (Land of mine, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_of_Mine) absolutly a brilliant movie, about the clearing of the mines, nealy 2 million, on west coast of Denmark after the second world war. Which made me think of my granddad and how he must have treating the prisoners under his watch. I hope that we can say that he was respected and he treated them respectfully too. Because this photo is of a plaque that one German prisoner gave my granddad when they parted ways at the border.

6 km of tarmac/trail and muddy mud, very mild and humid, swallowed a fly, foot caught a stone send me flying into a Hawthorne tree, lucky my shoulder hit a branch and stopped me from going further into the hedge but there was some damage that Paddy did wonder if I needed a spare leg.

Didn't run yesterday as Amy (the storm) was a bit to wild to venture out in where we were. So today I was all ready to go, while doing the morning emptying of the mutts, Paddy had a massive bout of zoooomies! Which resulted in 22kg of fur at high speed headbutting my left knee. Hard enough for me to go, well that's a limp for a day or two. So therefore no run this AM, but I glad to say that I had some recovery medicine for lunch, burp, which is working a treat, might even recover enough for an afternoon run ;)

Today's run were one of these runs, where you set out not planning to set records or looking at you watch/time. Just time spend outside. Even had a nice natter with a farmer and his dog, spend time looking across valleys, saw sheep and horses, and putting my lungs back in. To then come back to HQ see the time and go eh? How did that happen, I faffed, took my time, looked at great views. The clock should show at least 20-30min more, because it felt like I was out for much longer, in a good way

Remember yesterday's hill, aka Mr Wall, today I met his big brother. Glorious run up a grand track through a wood and then the open hill with fantastic views over the sea to the Lake District. Perfect weather about 12c, sun, light breeze. The run down wasn't really a run for the first half. It was more and reenactment of a famous 80s movie, but Paddy and I couldn't agree who would play Artax or Atreyu and we were lacking a smoke machine.

I decided I needed some help, and put on Depeche Mode, instead of trying out this fella, before the upcoming hill. It's a steep wee bugger, some would call it a wall and that's includes me. The downhill on the other side was much easier, but these plastic sheets they use to stop trail corrosion, are lethal when exposed and wet. I was glad that I had a pulling Paddy, that I could use as an anchor to hold me upright a few times. Sorry, lad for yanking you lead, but I would have dropped hard if it wasn't for you.

Look ma, I'm higher than the higest pub in Scotland. Ended up the the clouds, which were a bit moist, but out of the wind it was rather plensant. Wet paths through the heather made it a bit heavy running. And the yellow fusion thingy in the sky came out on the last km or so, which was nice.

never liked running, only saw road/city runners and they always looked miserable. After more hiking and watching Beau Miles on YouTube for some reason I started to run in 2024. I tend to run in remote places but when I do meet other runners I get a smile and a wave. Yesterday I got to a gate first and held it open, the 30sec chat with the couple running the other way was very nice and friendly. Don't run for PB, pace or splits. I run for time spent outside. And on here I don't feel pressured to do otherwise.

Today's run was an emotional one. I ran around a hill and got up to the trig point where we often took our beloved Tilley. We would have celebrated her 12th gotcha day today. We often walked here with her as we could meet up with her favorite person, lass' mum. Run pain free Tilley over the rainbow bridge, miss you.

Shorter than I feared, but there were still detours. First one was because a farmer "forgot" to remake the stile, after the dry stone wall had fallen. Second one was cows in the field. Said fields was nearly impossible to traverse, because 9-10 months ago it was foot deep mud that the cow churned up, now after a long spell of no rain it was rock hard deep cow hoof print holes covered in grass. Every step was a test on my ankles, even Paddy the Irish mutt found these 2km hard work.

But all in all a grand day out, even if I managed to rip my running shorts on a bit of barbed wire. Good temps and the odd beck crossing had enough water in them to refill Paddy.

And the day was finished off with two recovery points at the local blues festival with a good friend.

Ghost walkers. Lass reported this same on her run last night. Since we got nervous/anxious dogs, we tend to keep a good eye on things around us. So we don't get suprise by a quite cyclists, or stuck in a pinch point with other walkers and tying to find more space or exit routes if we see other dogs. This is "the joy" of rescue dogs, you never know what/who/when some-thing/one scares them.

Which of course on today's run suprised me like the lass yesterday. Dead straight road, for nearly a kilometer, with a wee dip at the end. Not a soul, just me, the mutt and trees. No paths left or right, just two ends. I dip out of sight, see the first dip in the graph on the photo, pop back up and the road is full. 5 people out of nowhere, there on the path, ok the two at the far end I could understand. But the other 3, nope they couldn't have done that distance in the time I was out of sight, so where did they come from...

5 or so km around one of the many world war one battle grounds. Grim and somber to think about what horrors happen here. Visited the little British cemetery hidden within the trees and corn fields. So it was nice to see a local farmer had put out a water bowl for passing dogs ;)

I should have listened to my watch, because Suunto said yesterday that it might be a good idea to have a rest day tomorrow.

Had a good run, a bit to hot for me, but felt good. But everytime I slowed down, for hills or letting the Irish mutt do his WeeMail, I got attacked by horseflies.

Lost count of how many of these little bar stewards managed to bite me. I will take an antihistamine and hope the itch, that will for sure happen later, ain't mental.

Woke up a 6am after a warm night sleep and thought - naaa way to warm and humid for a run. And most importantly I only had one more day with access to baked Danish goods. From now on my calories intake Vs my run distance will be much more aligned ;)

Great route in my old playground, this wood 45+ years ago was my backyard. As I used to go to the school next to it and lived 5min away. Though I only recognise one 200m stretch. Spend many a day playing hide and seek or cowboys and Indian. Followed by family hiking and scout trips.

Boy, were there many short and sharp up and downs, with twist and turns, which made this a joyful and fun run, but knacked me so much that I had to get a recovery ice cream.

First time trying liquorice icc cream, boy was that good. Before you say ewwww try it and also salted Danish (not that mild Dutch stuff) liquorice is the best candy in the world, fact!

*Krat = scrubery

Even Paddy the Irish mutt knows not to climb up on a wood stack. And he haven't watched Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, Tom & Jerry as public service announcements. We don't need signs, hiviz, health'n'safety suppressive regime, as I only see in the UK. Where DK, F and Espainia etc got non of that fuzz.

As the brilliant Steve Hughes said, it's common sense and my parents brought me up to not be a moron.
