One issue with the relay seems to be payment. I’m in NY, so can’t use what most relay owners use (ZBD). I thought I had another solution working, but need to test it more.

They’re used to web interfaces. I can set up their profile, their relays, their NIP-05, and a starter follow list, and even guide them through setting up for Lightning.

The idea is they don’t need to understand any of those terms to get set up.

BTW, Nostr really needs a style manual where we define better terms than “NIP-05 validation”…

Yesterday I did USD → BTC in Cash App then did Cash App → WoS. Then immediately tried to buy the filter.wine renewal. And it failed.

Initially I was doing Iris on my Mac, paying with QR code from my phone. Tried that a few times. Then tried from Damus, but Damus tried to open Cash App, so I copy and pasted the invoice details into WoS, but it failed. Tried again a few hours later failed then too.

I'll change the wording so it's a bit more flexible. That relays who say they support the (optional) NIP must have the _option_ to allow unpaid users to submit moderation reports related to content on the relay. And should have that option on by default, but may give relay owners the option to disable the feature.

My server is DDOS protected. 😁 Hell, even my DNS is DDOS protected. Though DDOS protection only protects so much. It wouldn't stop someone from slowly eating up a lot of database space with lots of events that have garbage stuffed in `content`.

The issue is a legal one. Right now if I have CSAM on my relay I could serve it to an unpaid user but I wouldn't see their report, and hence there would be no way for me to know I have a legal problem.

I have a rather large list of IPs I block that gets updated regularly. It's just part of being a webmaster. I'll add attacks on my relay to the types of things I monitor and block.

I’ve got a database of over a million #GayPorn images (sponsor promos). I _could_ do NIP-94 events for each of them, but what’s the point? All it could possibly achieve is extra bandwidth on my server. I feel like it’s one of those cases of “just because you_can_ do it doesn’t mean you _should_ do it”…

Can anyone think of an advantage to doing that? Would it help me find other uses of the same image? I could possibly then repost the other person’s note with a link to the sponsor site. Is something like that possible?

Someone uploads a file on my server. I publish a NIP-94 event. What do I give back to them to paste into their Nostr post? The URL or the nevent ID?

If I also give them the URL, what happens when they use that in a client that supports NIP-94? Is yet another NIP-94 event created? How exactly is that event linked to mine? Is it just a matter that that they both will be returned by any client that's looking for a file with that hash?

Could I publish the NIP-94 event after the fact?

Also - am I correct in thinking NIP-94 can't really be used to facilitate the equivalent of srcset? It's too bad images weren't thought about more when it was being developed. It would be great if you could find all the sizes of a particular image - but each size has a different hash and NIP-94 is one hash per event, right?

The problem is if you're hosting adult content (images/videos, it's not really an issue with text) you need proof of consent and proof of age (plus the proof ownership or license to use that you need for all content). The site doesn't always have to have proof of consent / age on file, but it does need to confirm that they exist.

For example - take a photo of someone else on a beach and upload it to the Internet - no problem - it's a public place and there's no expectation of privacy. Do the same thing on a nude beach and you need proof of age and proof of consent.

The moment you host something without at least a nominal check of age and consent you open yourself up to all sorts of problems. The laws on CSAM and things like revenge porn are really strict and the penalties are often harsh. Big corporations get away with more because they have teams of lawyers. But a single significant legal incident can put a small company out of business.

I've got over a million unique images in my porn database at the moment (and probably another 600K or so I need to import). It's terabytes of data. And if I've learned one thing dealing with those is you don't store images/videos in databases - you store them externally.

nothenry (npub1xv6…xea6) had suggested an approach where there was a more traditional POST to submit the image/video. That's something I could consider. But then it gets to your interface question - I'd need some sort of confirmation of:

- ownership/license
- consent
- age

But it's one thing when someone confirms those things on my site, but it's another thing for me to trust a 3rd party to confirm those things. Maybe… But I'd have to think about it some more.

But at the end of the day storing images/videos in the relay database is a non-starter for me even with all the documents in the world. I know better than to do that. Which is why I love NIP-94, but not NIP-95.

I thought briefly about just specifying a really small size so it could be used for things like animated emojis - but then I took a look at how much you could show in a small file and I figured that was a bad idea as well. The problem is anytime you talk about ways to moderate content (which is what filtering algorithms are) people on Nostr yell “CENSORSHIP” and the conversation goes nowhere.

People need to realize that bottom-up content moderation isn’t censorship.

Case and point is the PR for “NIP-69” which simply defines a standardized vocabulary for NIP-36 & NIP-56 and people are pushing back on it. They openly say it worries them, but can’t describe exactly what the problem is. That’s just fear. If they give it some thought they’ll see bottom-up isn’t censorship…

IMHO "NIP-05 identifier" should be renamed "Nostr Address" because it looks like an email address and it's for Nostr… And the NIP-05 spec should be amended to _require_ clients implementing it to use that name (or it's equivalent translation).

As far as the confusing onboarding process… What I want to do is have them set up their profile on my site. My users will want explicit profile pics, so I'll handle the hosting of those and set everything up for them - I'll set up their (NIP-05) Nostr address, set up their relays, set up an interesting follow list of people I think they'll like, etc. and then give them their nsec and tell them to go have fun on a full-fledged client and come back if they have any problems.

So "set up your profile here - but use any client you want for day-to-day stuff".

BTW, another reason why the other clients should support your approach and have NIP-94 embeds/previews in notes is because it makes it much easier to fight CSAM on Nostr. Once a credible authority has said that a particular image or video is CSAM - instead of just having a URL, there's now a hash that can be checked in the future so CSAM can be taken down even before it's reported.

And just in general it allows relay owners to take down content they've disapproved in the past immediately instead of having to wait for it to be reported. Not saying it'll work perfectly, but it's better than the current situation which is a bad game of whack-a-mole.

Paying for the bandwidth will be an issue for #[2] - I'm not sure he's monetizing things well enough to afford it. I've always seen a proxy service as a paid upgrade to Nostr. But the clients would need to set a standard and then let the users choose which proxy service they want to use. And there'd need to be some type of AUTH.

And then there's the issue of videos… Not sure anyone will want to proxy those given their size. Maybe if it's served via HLS, but I'm guessing doing it would be "non-trivial".

It's been 2 months since I first asked my hosting company to set up a nostream server so I could do a relay. Nostream had a dependency my server OS didn't support. So the first strategy was to upgrade the OS. But then I gave it more thought and realized that the server probably didn't have enough RAM. So a month into it we figured out I need to change servers, not just have an OS upgrade.

As of yesterday the relay is up in dev mode, BUT the guy doing the migration/install then went on vacation for 2 weeks. (UGH!) Hopefully another support tech can take over and get things working properly. But we're close.

Then there's the issue that New York State has weird rules about crypto and I can't use ZBD - so I can't enable the (easy) payment method for nostream.

Bottom line - it will probably be a few more weeks before the relay is fully up and running. But it's a priority for me, so we'll see…

Paul - have you spoken to a lawyer/solicitor (whatever you call them)? I don’t see legal issues for relays. I see legal issues for client apps and media servers. The relay is not the one presenting the image/video. In fact it’s hard to figure out which relay is the source since there can be many sources of the same note.

I'm actively working on getting a porn-friendly, #nostream based Nostr relay up and running. Unfortunately my server is CentOS 7 which has an incompatibility with one of the requirements for nostream, so my host is building a new server for me. When I'm migrated over I should should be able to get the relay up and running pretty quickly. Hopefully our relay will be the first porn industry relay. 🤞
