On this day in 1884, electric lights were turned on at Canada's Parliament Buildings for the first time. A small powerplant was installed in the basement of the building.
The sockets and light bulbs were made by the Canada Clock Company & installed by Henry Byllesby.

He was convicted of treason in Regina for his part in the North-West Resistance.
His trial ran from July 28 to Aug. 1, 1885.
Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald refused to grant leniency for Riel.

Well-known for his love of the Tin Pan Alley musical era, he was twice a musical guest on SNL in its first season.
He died in 2019.
