San Francisco, like several cities in the U.S. and Ireland, had a Magdalen Asylum for "wayward" girls. Teen girls and young women were sent to the Mag by law enforcement and by family members for such "crimes" as being raped, homeless, promiscuous, pregnant out of wedlock, mentally ill, alcoholic, or simply for being "difficult," as well as a few who'd been arrested for prostitution (like the facility's namesake).

San Francisco's Magdalen Asylum, run by the Sisters of Mercy, existed from 1856 to 1932. For much of that time, it was located at Potrero Ave and 21st Street, where today's SF General (Zuckerberg) Hospital stands. It housed up to 200 girls and young women at any given time.

Inmates were forced to work long hours, as slaves, doing needle work and laundry, often in complete silence. When they broke rules or "misbehaved," they were isolated (solitary confinement) and denied food. The facility had its own cemetery for girls, babies, and nuns who died there. Dozens, possibly hundreds, of babies were born on the premises, many adopted out without their mothers' consent.

In 1992, San Francisco General built its current Behavioral Health Center on the site of the former Magdalen Asylum.

Read more here: https://www.bethwinegarner.com/magdalen-asylum-girls

#workingclass #LaborHistory #children #childabuse #MagdalenLaundry #sanfrancisco #mentalhealth #sexwork

Today in Writing History May 22, 1880: Victor Hugo died. Hugo wrote poetry, novels and drama over the course of sixty years. His most famous works include Les Miserables (1862) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831). Though he was a conservative early in his life, he broke with the conservatives in 1848, calling for the end of misery and poverty. He also supported universal suffrage and free education for all children. Additionally, he was known worldwide for his advocacy to abolish the death penalty and slavery. In 1859, he asked the U.S. to spare John Brown’s life. He also begged Benito Juarez to spare the life of Maximilian I.

When Napoleon seized power, Hugo publicly called him a traitor. After that, he lived in exile from 1855 to 1870. While in exile, he published his most famous political pamphlets, Napoleon le Petit and Histoire d’un Crime. Both were banned in France. However, in spite of these progressive views, he supported colonialism because of its “civilizing” effects on the colonized peoples. And he wrote that the Paris Commune was as “idiotic as the National Assembly is ferocious. From both sides, folly.” But he did offer his support to Commune participants when they were being brutalized.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #johnbrown #victorhugo #pariscommune #poverty #racism #exile #censorship #freespeech #slavery #abolition #poetry #novels #fiction #writer #author [@bookstadon](https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon )

Today in Labor History May 18, 1979: An Oklahoma jury ruled in favor of the estate of atomic worker Karen Silkwood. Kerr-McGee Nuclear Company was ordered to pay $505,000 in actual damages and $10 million in punitive damages for negligence leading to Silkwood’s plutonium contamination. On appeal, the court reduced the settlement to a pitiful $5,000, the estimated value of her property losses. In 1984, the Supreme Court restored the original verdict, but Kerr-McGee again threatened to appeal. Ultimately, Silkwood’s family settled out of court for $1.38 million and the company never had to admit any wrongdoing.

Silkwood first started working at Kerr-McGee in 1972. She joined the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers union and participated in a strike. After the strike, her comrades elected her to the union’s bargaining committee. She was the first woman to attain that status at Kerr-McGee. In this role, one of her duties was to investigate health and safety issues. Not surprisingly, she discovered numerous violations, including exposure of workers to radioactive contamination. The union accused Kerr-McGee of falsifying inspection records, manufacturing faulty fuel rods and other safety violations. After testifying to the Atomic Energy Commission, Silkwood discovered that her own body and home were contaminated with radiation. Her body contained 400 times the legal limit for plutonium contamination and she was expelling contaminated air from her lungs. Her house was so contaminated they had to destroy much of her personal property.

Later, she decided to go public with documentation proving the company’s negligence. She left a meeting with union officials in order to meet a New York Times journalist. She brought a binder and packet of documents supporting her allegations with her. However, she never made it, dying in a suspicious car crash. The documents were never found. Some journalists believe she was rammed from behind by another vehicle. Investigators noted damage to the rear of her car that would be consistent with this hypothesis. She had also received death threats shortly before her death. However, no one has yet substantiated the claims of foul play.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #silkwood #union #atomic #nuclear #radioactive #contamination #murder #unionbusting #assassination #strike #organizer

Today in Labor History May 15, 1919: Workers in Winnipeg, Canada, initiated a huge general strike involving 30,000 workers. The strike lasted until June 26th, when the Winnipeg Labor Council declared the strike over. During the strike, the Mounted Police tried repeatedly to violently suppress the workers. The workers called for a six-hour workday and a five-day work week. During the strike, virtually the entire workforce halted work. Even the local cops voted for the strike. However, the strike committee asked the cops and utility workers to stay on the job to help keep basic services functioning. They set up a public kitchen which served food to hundreds of people each day. The Winnipeg “Free Press” called the strikers bohunks, aliens and anarchists. They called in the Royal Mounted Police and arrested dozens of people, charging some with seditious conspiracy. On Bloody Saturday, June 21, the Mounties fired into the crowd, killing one and wounding thirty others. In May and June, General Strikes broke out in 30 other Canadian cities.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #GeneralStrike #winnipeg #canada #strike #police #solidarity #policebrutality #racism #anarchism

'Insect apocalypse' is already fueling malnutrition in some regions, first-of-its-kind study reveals.

Insects are disappearing, up to 1% per year, by some estimates. Because many insects pollinate crops, lower insect abundance has hurt everything from ecosystem health to crop yields. This in turn is causing malnutrition, hunger, lots of income.

https://www.livescience.com/animals/insects/insect-apocalypse-is-already-fueling-malnutrition-in-some-regions-first-of-its-kind-study-reveals

Today in Labor History May 5, 2018: Capping several weeks of teacher unrest across the country, public educators in Arizona won raises of 10 to 20 percent. Just prior to this, Oklahoma teachers struck for nine days and won roughly $6,000 in annual increases. And before that, teachers in West Virginia, won a five percent raise after their nearly two-week walkout. However, in almost all of the teacher strikes that occurred that year, the unions negotiated sell-out contracts that gave workers a fraction of what they demanded.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #union #strike #teachers #education #schools #wages #Arizona #westvirginia #Oklahoma

Today in Labor History May 5, 1981: Bobby Sands (1954-1981) died from starvation, ending his 66-day hunger strike. Sands was an Irish political prisoner and member of Parliament who had been locked up in the notoriously brutal Maze Prison near Belfast. The strike was an attempt to get the British government to grant political prisoner status to Nationalist inmates, rather than treating them as common criminals.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #ireland #republican #IRA #BobbySands #HungerStrike #maze #prison #PoliticalPrisoner

Today in Labor History May 5, 1931: The Infamous Battle of Harlan County, Kentucky occurred. Also known as the Battle of Evarts, the miners’ strike began in response to wage cuts implemented in February. On May 5, a scab accosted a union worker, resulting in three deaths. Governor Flem Sampson called in the National Guard, which killed several more union miners. The Harlan County class war was the inspiration for Florence Reece's famous union song "Which Side Are You On?" The strike continued for years, with the miners finally winning in 1940.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPFY8CwAKU0

#workingclass #LaborHistory #strike #union #florencereece #WhichSideAreYouOn #scab #massacre #harlancounty #kentucky #coal #mining #wages #classwar #folk #folk music

Today in Labor History May 5, 1886: The Bay View Massacre occurred in Milwaukee, one day after the Haymarket bombing, in Chicago. Workers in both cities were demonstrating for the 8-hour work-day. There were approximately 1,400 strikes that year for the 8-hour day. In Milwaukee, the governor called out the state militia. They shot and killed seven protesters, including a 14-year-old boy. No militiamen were ever charged. However, the authorities convicted fifty of the strikers and sentenced them to hard labor for "rioting."

#workingclass #LaborHistory #bayview #massacre #riot #EightHourDay #union #strike #haymarket #mayday

Today in Labor History May 5, 1884: The Knights of Labor struck at Jay Gould’s Union Pacific over wage cuts and won. Because of their success in this strike, their membership rapidly grew. However, when the Knights struck again, in 1886, Gould defeated them and the union quickly started to unravel. 200,000 workers participated in the Great Southwest Train Strike of 1886. Gould hired Pinkertons to infiltrate union and to work as scabs. The Governor of Missouri mustered the National Guards. The Governor of Texas used the National Guards and the Texas Rangers against the strikers. In her “Constitution for British Soviets,” she argued that "Mothers and … organizers of the family life of the community [should] be adequately represented, and … take their due part in the management of society [through] a system of household Soviets..."

#workingclass #LaborHistory #sylviapankhurst #feminism #feminist #WomensRights #communism #soviet #councilcommunism #pannekoek

Today in Writing History May 5, 1864: Nellie Bly, American journalist and author, was born on this day. Bly was famous for her record-breaking trip around the world, which she completed in 72 days. This was faster than Phineas Fogg’s trip, in Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days.” However, she also pioneered investigative journalism. In one of her most celebrated pieces, she went undercover to report on abuse and neglect at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island. Her report created a sensation, which led to some reforms.

#feminism #journalism #writing #author #mentalhealth #nelliebly #workingclass #LaborHistory

Today in Labor History May 4, 1970: Ohio National Guards murdered four students at Kent State University. They also injured nine others, including one who was permanently paralyzed. During the massacre, they fired 67 rounds in 13 seconds at the unarmed crowd. The students were protesting the U.S. invasion of Cambodia. With the current wave of student protests against the Israeli genocide in Gaza, the government’s response is looking sickeningly similar to its response to student protests in the early 70s: Violent repression, use of chemical agents, snipers on rooftops. If the vitriolic rhetoric of politicians and pundits continues, another student massacre seems imminent.

#students #KentState #massacre #NationalGuard #cambodia #bombing #USImperialism #MayTheFourth #freepalestine #EndTheOccupation #genocide #gaza #students

Today in Labor History May 4, 1946: The U.S. government deployed marines to end the Battle of Alcatraz. It began as a failed prison escape. It turned into a war-like battle, with marines using grenades against prisoners and tactics they had used in Japan. Three of the perpetrators and two prison officials died in the fighting. Fourteen other officers were injured. The government later executed two more prisoners for participating in the riot. One of the prisoners who died in the riot, had recently petitioned for a writ of habeas corpus. He claimed the cops had beat a confession out of him and he had hospital records to prove it.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #prison #alcatraz #PrisonEscape #Riot #PrisonerAbuse #MayTheFourth

Today in Labor History May 4, 1926: Workers started a General Strike in the U.K. Unions called the strike to force the government to prevent wage reductions for 1.2 million locked-out coal miners. The strike lasted until May 12. Over 1.7 million workers participated. However, the TUC (Trades Union Congress) limited participation to just a few unions because they feared the revolutionary potential of a full blown General Strike. Today in Labor History May 4, 1886: A day after police killed four striking workers and injured hundreds, protesters gathered at Haymarket Square in Chicago. As the peaceful event drew to a close, someone threw a bomb into the police line. Police responded by shooting into the crowd, killing one and wounding many. Eight anarchists were later framed even though most were not even present at the Haymarket rally and there was no evidence that linked any of them to the bombing. They tried and convicted eight anarchist leaders in a kangaroo court: August Spies, Albert Parsons, Adolph Fisher, George Engel, Louis Lingg, Michael Schwab, Samuel Felden and Oscar Neebe. Parson’s brother testified at the trial that the real bomb thrower was a Pinkerton agent provocateur. This was entirely consistent with the Pinkertons modus operandi. They used the agent provocateur, James McParland, to entrap and convict the Molly Maguires, 20 innocent Irish union activists, just a few years prior. As a result, twenty of them were hanged and the Pennsylvania mining union was crushed. McParland also tried to entrap WFM leader, Big Bill Haywood, for the murder of Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg. Steunenberg had crushed the WFM strike in 1899, the same one in which the WFM had blown up a colliery. However, Haywood had Clarence Darrow representing him. And Darrow proved his innocence.

On November 11, 1887, they executed Spies, Parson, Fisher and Engel. They sang the Marseillaise, the revolutionary anthem, as they marched to the gallows. The authorities arrested family members who attempted to see them one last time. This included Parson’s wife, Lucy, who was also a significant anarchist organizer and orator. In 1905, she helped cofound the IWW. Moments before he died, Spies shouted, "The time will come when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you strangle today." And Engel and Fischer called out, "Hurrah for anarchism!" Parsons tried to speak, but was cut off by the trap door opening beneath him.

Workers throughout the world protested the trial, conviction and executions. Prominent people spoke out against it, including Clarence Darrow, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, and William Morris. The Haymarket Affair inspired thousands to join the anarchist movement, including Emma Goldman. And it is the inspiration for International Workers’ Day, which is celebrated on May 1st in nearly every country in the world except the U.S.

You can read my complete bio of Lucy Parsons here: https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2024/03/24/lucy-parsons/

You can read my article on the Pinkertons here: https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2024/04/04/union-busting-by-the-pinkertons/

And my article on the Molly Maguires Here:
https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2024/04/13/the-myth-of-the-molly-maguires/

#LaborHistory #workingclass #anarchism #haymarket #execution #deathpenalty #chicago #union #solidarity #IWW #maythefourth #eighthourday #lucyparsons #bigbillhaywood #pinkertons #mollymaguires #police #strike

Mainstream media in the U.S. portrayed them as the aggressors, as bullies.

Got so bad that Israel hired PR forms to cleanse their image. This is what led to the obsessive focus on all criticism being called "antisemitism" and all aggression by them as being "self-defense against terrorism."

      Why people hate Congress:

1. Nothing to alleviate economic suffering, despite 67% of US residents saying they struggle just to make ends meet.

2. Nothing to reign in Trump, military support for Israel, genocide, and endless wars.

3. And now this: Dems cave in and finally allow passage of a DHS funding bill (without ICE funding), which allows Republicans to later ram through $70 billion more for ICE through reconciliation, thus skirting the filibuster and virtually insuring that the ICE gets its funding, even without Dem support....

...And the Dems can claim they never voted for increased ICE funding (even though their vote for DHS funding is precisely what made it possible).

Which Dems made this happen?

Senate: Jeanne Shaheen, Dick Durbin, Tim Kaine, Maggie Hassan, Catherine Cortez Masto, Jacky Rosen, John Fetterman, and Angus King,

House: Jared Golden, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, Adam Gray, Don Davis, Henry Cuellar, and Tom Suozzi.

Today in Labor History May 3, 1968: The first battles of the May Upheaval began in the Latin Quarter of Paris. The police arrested 500 students meeting at the University of Sorbonne to protest repression at Nanterre. Revolt broke out along the route taken by police vans, with thousands fighting against the police. Throughout the month of May and part of June, workers and students occupied schools, factories and offices. By mid-May, 10 million workers were on strike.

#workingclass #LaborHisotry #paris #strike #revolt #rebellion #occupation #students #police #studentprotest #collegeoccupations

Today in Labor History May 3, 1937: The May Days began in Catalonia. This was a counterrevolution by the Spanish Republican government against radical workers and anarchists. Prior to this, the communists, socialists and anarchists had been allied against Franco’s nationalists. However, anarchist workers and their militias controlled most industries, which they had collectivized, while the communists controlled the central government and finances. As a result, this brought the various groups into conflict. To make matters worse, the Communist Party of Spain was taking orders from Moscow. And they wanted to separate the two struggles: revolution against the ruling class versus war against the nationalists. In contrast, the POUM and the anarchists saw the two struggles as one and the same. The anarchist faction included the Friends of Durruti Group and the CNT (a confederation of anarcho-syndicalist labor unions).

#workingclass #LaborHisotry #anarchism #civilwar #spain #fascism #antifascism #durruti #communism #Revolution #trotsky #franco #moscow

Today in Labor History May 3. 1933: James Brown was born on this day. He was the Godfather of Soul. Mr. Dynamite. The funkiest man alive. His career began in the R&B and doo wop era of the 1950s, with the Famous Flames. In the mid- to late-60s, he was influential in the creation of soul and funk. He continued to produce some of the funkiest songs ever in the 1970s. Some of his songs were social commentaries, like “I’m Black and I’m Proud.” And he performed in civil rights benefit concerts as early as the mid-60s. However, he was politically conservative. He supported Humphrey, in ’68. And later, he supported Republican causes, including the Nixon presidency. In 1972, his concert was picketed by people with signs saying, “James Brown: Nixon’s Clown.” He also supported Reagan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hj1iWqoYEc

#jamesbrown #racism #funk #soul #workingclass #LaborHistory #reagan #nixon #civilrights #BlackMastodon

Today in Labor History May 3, 1919: Pete Seeger was born, Patterson, New York. He started his folk singing career in the 1940s, with the Almanac singers. This group included Woodie Guthrie, Cisco Houston and Bess Lomax Hawes. They sang about industrial unionism and racial inclusiveness. In the 1950s, they reconstituted as the Weavers. However, they were blacklisted by the McCarthyites. As a result, radio stations stopped playing their records and their bookings were cancelled. Seeger was a member of the Communist Party USA, but left it in 1949. He was also an early backer of Bob Dylan until he went electric and Seeger threatened to unplug him at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. https://youtu.be/0fhL1E2cvvI

#workingclass #LaborHisotry #peteseeger #communism #folkmusic #woodyguthrie #newyork #mccarthy #bobdylan #FreeSpeech

Today in Labor History May 2, 1968: Workers walked out of the Hamtramck Dodge auto plant, in Detroit, in protest of management-mandated speed-ups there. Several of the black workers met across the street to form the Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (DRUM). At the time, over 70% of the workers at the Hamtramck plant were African American, yet leadership of their UAW local was dominated by older Polish Americans. Walter Reuther, head of the UAW at the time, had been an early supporter of the Civil Rights movement, but was pretty much asleep at the wheel in terms of prejudice against black workers by their own union. One of DRUM’s first demands was that Reuther be replaced by a black leader. They also demanded that the UAW end its collaborations with the FBI and the CIA. And they called on the UAW to organize a General Strike to end the war in Vietnam. In July, DRUM led a 2-day wildcat strike against the Hamtramck plant in which 4,000 workers walked out. DRUM’s militancy, and their willingness to stand up to the old guard at the UAW, inspired similar movements in the auto industry, including FRUM (Ford Revolutionary Union Movement) at the Ford River Rouge Plant, and ELRUM (Eldon Avenue Revolutionary Union Movement) at the Chrysler Eldon Avenue plant. In 1969, these groups united to form the League of Revolutionary Black Workers (LRBW).

DRUM was created by veteran organizers who were also communists, internationalists, and revolutionaries who had been organizing as early as 1963, when they formed the UHURU student group at Wayne State. One of the organizers was General Baker, who wrote the following: “When the Detroit rebellion took place (1967), and the National Guard and 101st Airborne was sent in, and they imposed curfew, if you got sick, you couldn’t go to the doctor. If you got hungry, you couldn’t get no food. But if you had a badge from Chrysler, Ford or General Motors, you could get through the police line, the National Guard line, the army line, all of them to take your butt to work. The conclusion we draw from that was that the only place in this society that Black people had any value was at a point of production. That’s why, after the rebellion, we turned all our efforts into organizing inside the plants. Believe it or not, like an accident of history in one year from that time, DRUM was born."

You can read more about this movement in “Motown and the Making of Black Revolutionaries,” by Walda Katz-Fishman and Jerome Scott; and Read @JamesTracy excellent review of this book here: https://convergencemag.com/articles/book-review-motown-and-the-making-of-black-revolutionaries/

#workingclass #LaborHistory #drum #frum #elrum #racism #union #strike #wildcat #uaw #Revolutionary #fbi #cia #generalstrike #rebellion #detroit #BlackMastodon

Today in Labor History May 2, 1919: Soldiers of the Freikorps murdered Gustav Landauer, anarchist, pacifist, and Education Minister, in the short-lived Bavarian Workers Republic. The Freikorps were right wing veterans of World War I. Many went on to become Nazis. Landauer believed that social change could not be won solely through control of the state or economy, but required a revolution in interpersonal relations. "The community we long for and need, we will find only if we sever ourselves from individuated existence; thus we will at last find, in the innermost core or our hidden being, the most ancient and most universal community: the human race and the cosmos." Landauer’s grandson is the acclaimed film director, Mike Nichols (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Graduate, Catch-22, Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood). British writer Philip Kerr wrote the novel, “Prussian Blue,” in which Hitler is one of the Freikorps militants who murdered Landauer.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #anarchism #pacifism #soviet #Revolution #gustavlandauer #fascism #nazis #hitler #film #books #novel #writer #author [@bookstadon](https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon )

Today In Labor History May 1, 1867: The Chicago General Strike. While most people familiar with the history of May Day recognize the 1886 Haymarket Affair, and the persecution of the Chicago’s anarchists, as some of the earliest events in the fight for the Eight Hour Workday, very few people know about the Chicago General Strike of 1867, which was organized 20 years earlier to demand an Eight Hour Workday. The 1867 strike occurred several years before Haymarket martyr Albert Parsons, and future IWW organizer Lucy Parsons, had even moved to Chicago, and just a few years after the end of chattel slavery in the U.S.

At the time of the 1867 General Strike, people had to work 12-14 hours per day, when they could find work at all. Conditions were dangerous and workers often lived in squalid, crowded tenements. Chicago had been a hotbed of labor organizing already for the past several years. And the National Labor Union had recently succeeded in getting Congress to pass a toothless Eight Hour Day bill that was routinely ignored by employers, without consequence. Angry over this, Chicago unions began organizing for a General Strike, which began on May 1, 1867. On the first day of the strike, over 6,000 people (roughly one-third of the city’s workforce at the time) were out on the streets. For the next week, they effectively shut down portions of the city. Similar strikes broke out in other Illinois towns. However, the authorities then mustered the state guard, who occupied the working-class neighborhoods and crushed the strike.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #generalstrike #chicago #eighthourday #anarchism #mayday

Today In Labor History May 1, 1970: A group of women from the Gay Liberation Front, who would later go on to cofound the Radicallesbians, disrupted the Second Congress to Unite Women, in New York City, by taking the stage in shirts that read “Lavender Menace,” demanding representation and inclusion in the National Organization of Women (NOW). They also displayed rose-colored signs throughout the auditorium with slogans like "Women's Liberation IS A Lesbian Plot" and "You're Going To Love The Lavender Menace." Some of the lesbian protesters also ripped off their shirts, to the shock of many of those in the audience, only to reveal a second Lavender Menace t-shirt underneath. At the time, NOW excluded lesbians and refused to support lesbian rights. NOW president Betty Frieden had referred to lesbians as a “lavender menace” that threatened the feminist movement with their “man-hating” image. NOW had previously excluded The Daughters of Bilitis (one of the first lesbian rights organization in the U.S.) from the First Congress to Unite Women in 1969. This prompted author and lesbian feminist rights activist Rita Mae Brown to resign from NOW. Brown was also one of the organizers of the Lavender Menace action on May 1, 1970.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #feminism #lgbtq #lavendermenace #lesbian #homophobia #now

Today In Labor History May 1, 1830: Mary Harris "Mother" Jones was born. Mother Jones was renowned for her militancy and fiery oration, as well as her many juicy quotes. She once said, “I’m no lady. I’m a hell-raiser.” She also was an internationalist, saying “My address is wherever there is a fight against oppression.” Despite the difficulties of constant travel, poor living and jail, she lived to be 100. She was also a cofounder of the anarchosyndicalist IWW.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #union #strike #IWW #mining #motherjones #solidarity #prison #mayday

Today In Labor History May 1, 1886: The first nationwide General Strike for the 8-hour day occurred in Milwaukee and other U.S. cities. In Chicago, police killed four demonstrators and wounded over 200. This led to the mass meeting a Haymarket Square, where an unknown assailant threw a bomb, killing several cops. The authorities responded by rounding up all the city’s leading anarchists, and a kangaroo court which wrongfully convicted 8 of them, including Albert Parsons, husband of Lucy Parsons, who would go on to cofound the IWW, along with Mother Jones, Big Bill Haywood, Eugene Debs, and others. Worldwide protests against the convictions and executions followed. To honor the wrongfully executed anarchists, and their struggle for the 8-hour day, May first has ever since been celebrated as International Workers Day in nearly every country in the world, except the U.S.

You can read my complete bio of Lucy Parsons here: https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2024/03/24/lucy-parsons/

#workingclass #LaborHistory #anarchism #haymarket #bombing #policebrutality #police #prison #execution #deathpenalty #GeneralStrike #IWW #lucyparsons #motherjones #EightHourDay #mayday

Today In Labor History May 1, 1884: The Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, forerunner of the AFL, resolved that "8 hours shall constitute a legal day's work starting May 1, 1886." Ironically, this union, created as a conservative foil against the radical Knights of Labor, helped radicalize workers with its resolution.

History of May Day, or International Workers’ Day

Today in labor history April 30 1886: 50,000 workers in Chicago were on strike. 30,000 more joined in the next day. The strike halted most of Chicago’s manufacturing. On May 3rd, the Chicago cops killed four unionists. Activists organized a mass public meeting and demonstration in Haymarket Square on May 4. During the meeting, somebody threw a bomb at the cops. The explosion and subsequent gunfire killed seven cops and four civilians, many likely from “friendly” fire from the cops themselves. Nobody ever identified the bomber. None of the killer cops was charged. However, the authorities started arresting anarchists throughout Chicago.

Ultimately, they tried and convicted eight anarchist leaders in a kangaroo court. The men were: August Spies, Albert Parsons, Adolph Fisher, George Engel, Louis Lingg, Michael Schwab, Samuel Felden and Oscar Neebe. Only two of the men were even present when the bomb was thrown. The court convicted seven of murder and sentenced them to death. Neebe was give fifteen years. Parson’s brother testified at the trial that the real bomb thrower was a Pinkerton agent provocateur. This was entirely consistent with the Pinkertons modus operandi. They used the agent provocateur, James McParland, to entrap, convict and execute 20 Irish labor leaders (the so-called Molly Maguires) in Pennsylvania just a few years earlier.

In 1905, she helped cofound the IWW, along with Big Bill Haywood, and others.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #anarchism #haymarket #lucyparsons #IWW #emmagoldman #strike #union #EightHourDay #PoliceBrutality #killercops #prison #deathpenalty #Pinkertons #police #mayday #generalstrike

Today in labor history April 30, 1871: A mob massacred more than 100 Apaches at Camp Grant, Arizona. The mob included 48 Mexican Americans and 92 Tohono O’odham. Most of the Apaches that were killed were women and children. The Apaches had already surrendered and placed themselves under U.S. protection when the attack occurred. As a result, the Apache, and their Yavapai allies, launched a series of attacks against the U.S. Their attacks continued into 1875. Descendants of those massacred are currently fighting against Resolution Copper, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, to block mining on the massacre site—the third largest copper deposit in the world. John McCain and Jeff Flake authored the legislation that opened the site to mining. Seventh-day Adventists, the Islam and Religious Freedom Action Team of the Religious Freedom Institute, Mormons, the Christian Legal Society, Jewish Coalition for Religious Liberty, and the Sikh Coalition, have joined together to support the Apache and filed legal briefs for them. Rio Tinto is responsible for some of the worst environmental devastation on the planet, union busting, and for the mass murder of indigenous environmental and labor activists around the world. They also have a history of collaborating with fascists, including Franco, in Spain. As recently as March, 2024, the federal courts have ruled in favor of Rio Tinto, allowing them to mine the sacred Apache land.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #massacre #indigenous #genocide #RioTinto #copper #mining #union #fascism #racism #pollution #apache #nativeamerican #sacredland #solidarity

Today in Labor History April 29, 1976: Three members of the Communist Committees for Workers' Power assassinated Enrico Pedenovi, lawyer and politician for the fascist Italian Social Movement. They did it in retaliation for the fascists’ attack on a young anti-fascist, 21-year-old Gaetano Amoroso, who died a few days later. Thousands demonstrated in the streets in celebration of the assassination, which came at a time of rising conflicts between fascists and anti-fascists in Italy. Milan had for years been a hotbed of socialist and anti-fascist organizing. In the post-war period, there was the Volante Rossa (Flying Red Squad), an armed group of partisans who carried on the struggle to transition from denazification to socialist revolution. They also rejected the reformism and collaborationism of the Communist Party (PCI). Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s, there were militant factory occupations and growing youth resistance movements. But the government, and fascist organizations resisted with bombings and police assaults on activists, like the massacre at Piazza Fontana. In the months preceding the assassination of Pedenovi, Milan had seen feminist demonstrations in support of abortion rights; left wing General Strikes; building occupations; supermarket expropriations; and growing fascist attempts to suppress the left.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #fascism #antifascism #italy #milan #communism #assassination

Today in Labor History April 29, 1992: People rioted in Los Angeles and protested in other major cities in response to the Rodney King verdict. Despite video footage of police brutally beating a defenseless King, the jury acquitted all the police officers involved. Over the next three days 64 people died and hundreds of buildings were destroyed. However, the LA riots in also included an anti-Asian pogrom. 2,300 Korean businesses were looted or burned and hundreds of Koreans suffered from PTSD. Those who died included 2 Asians, 28 African Americans, 19 Latinos and 15 whites. In San Francisco, African American youth chased cops down the street with bats. And protesters shattered the façade of Bank of America with a concrete bus bench. I also remember having to duck behind a car to avoid being shot by a scared shop owner near Chinatown, as young men ran out of his store with 12-packs of beer. The violent police assault on King was one of the first to go viral in the digital age. It inspired hundreds of protests and ushered in a new era of citizen journalists documenting police brutality that contributed to the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #policebrutality #police #RodneyKing #lapd #blm #blacklivesmatter #Riot #racism #antiAsianHate #BlackMastodon

Today in labor history April 29, 1899: Members of the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) seized a train, loaded it with 3,000 pounds of dynamite, and drove it into the Bunker Hill mine in Wardner, Idaho because the mine owners refused to respect their demand to hire only union men. They completely destroyed the $250,000 colliery. President McKinley responded by sending in black soldiers from Brownsville, Texas. He ordered them to round up the miners and imprison them in specially built "bullpens." From 1899 to 1901, the U.S. Army occupied most of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in Idaho. The WFM was led by Big Bill Haywood, who would go on to cofound the more radical IWW, in 1905, along with Mother Jones, Lucy Parsons, Eugene Debs, and others.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #mining #union #strike #sabotage #dynamite #prison #racism #IWW #bigbillhaywood #motherjones #lucyparsons #eugenedebs #socialism #anarchism

Today in Labor History April 29, 1895: The U.S. sent warships to Nicaragua to "protect" US interests. This was the first of many military interventions in that country. President Taft ordered the overthrow of President Zelaya in 1909. The U.S. later invaded in 1910 and occupied the country in 1912. However, the original Sandinistas defeated that occupation in 1933. But Sandino’s victory was short-lived because Anastasio Somoza assassinated him in 1934. Somoza brutally ruled Nicaragua for the next forty years, until the new Sandinistas overthrew him in 1979. And then, again, the U.S. intervened. This time, by funding the right-wing Contras. Later, when Congress blocked aid to the Contras, Reagan secretly funded them with illegal arms shipments to Iran.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #nicaragua #imperialism #sandino #reagan #revolution #socialism #sandinista #dictator

Today in labor history April 29, 1894: Jacob Coxey led a group of 500 unemployed workers from the Midwest to Washington, D.C. They demanded federal jobs for the poor. The authorities promptly arrested Coxey and many of his followers for trespassing on Capitol grounds.

The Return of Coxey's Army (By Eddie Starr)
When they busted all the unions,
You can't make no living wage.
And this working poor arrangement,
Gonna turn to public rage.
And then get ready . . .
We're gonna bring back Coxey's Army
And take his message to the street.

The financial panic of 1893 caused one of the worst depressions the country had ever seen. The depression lasted five years and caused unemployment to reach 18%. Banks failed and currency supplies dried up after Congress repealed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. Coxey owned a sand quarry and was personally wealthy. But he was outraged at the government’s lack of response to the poverty he saw around him. So, he organized a march on Washington, to demand jobs for the poor.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #poverty #unemployment #depression #wages #march #washington #coxeysarmy #banks

Today in Labor History April 13, 1975: Phalangists in Lebanon killed 26 members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. This marked the start of the 15-year Lebanese Civil War. 120,000 people died in the war and nearly one million people fled the country. One of the worst atrocities of the war was the Sabra and Shatila massacre. Lebanese Phalangists, allied with the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), slaughtered 3,500 Lebanese and Palestinian civilians in a refugee camp. IDF soldiers facilitated the slaughter by blocking exits and preventing civilians from escaping. In 1983, the Kahan Commission found then-Israeli Defense Minister, Ariel Sharon, personally responsible for the massacre. He resigned and then became Prime Minister.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #palestine #israel #idf #lebanon #CivilWar #massacre #SabraAndShatila #PFLP #zionism #FreePalestine #palestine #humanrights

Today In Labor History April 4, 1866: Russian revolutionary, Dmitry Karakozov attempted to assassinate Czar Alexander II. He failed and the government executed him. Some believe that Karakozov chose the year 1866, since that was the year in which a character in Chernyshevsky’s “What Is To Be Done?” planned to launch a revolution. In the book, the protagonist, Vera Pavlovna, escapes a controlling family, and an arranged marriage, to start a socialist cooperative and a truly egalitarian romantic partnership. She starts a seamstress commune, with shared living quarters, profit-sharing and an on-site school to further the women’s education. Chernyshevsky wrote the novel in response to Turgenev’s “Fathers and Sons.” He wrote the book while imprisoned in the Peter and Paul fortress. The book inspired generations of Russian radicals, including the nihilists, anarchists and even many Marxists.

#workingclass #LaborHistory #nihilism #anarchism #communism #chernyshevsky #russia #novel #fiction #Revolutionary #commune #socialism #books #fiction #author #writer [@bookstadon](https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon )

Today in Labor History March 31, 1913: The Vienna Concert Society rioted during a performance of modernist music. The audience was shocked and offended by the weird music by Schoenberg, Berg, Zemlinsky, and von Webern. Their violent rioting forced a premature end to the concert, which became known as the Skandalkonzert (scandal concert).

#Riot #skandalkoncert #webern #berg #mahler #Schoenberg #concert #vienna #concert #music
