There's a new onboarding wizard for Nostr beginners!

Other devs could even use it for their own desktop clients. It gets initialized once at the start in the terminal, and for renewing the trust session, the terminal pops up every 24 hours and asks for the password.

Not anymore.

I've heard newbies don't like the terminal. So NoorSigner now runs completely in silent mode. NoorNote takes over 100% control of NoorSigner. It handles the initialization, asks for the trust session password every 24 hours ... no terminal in sight anymore. It all happens in the background. NoorNote just passes it along to NoorSigner.

If you don't like that, you can switch off NoorSigner's silent mode in the settings, and then NoorSigner will pop up in its own terminal again.

But that's still not all.

You can just do things, right? Okay, I've got lots of kinds of notifications in #NoorNote by now, more than in other clients. But not all of them are equally important to me.

For example, hashtag notifications. You can subscribe to any hashtag in NoorNote and then get notified whenever a note with it pops up. Great for #asknostr quiz games, but not always. Sometimes they don't interest me.

Those have priority 3 for me, the lowest priority, and they're shown as an empty circle for the notifications badge.

Then there are important notifications, like when someone replies to your note. You shouldn't miss those. So I drag that into priority 1 in the priority settings. The notification badge then lights up and pulses a little, and I know, "Aha, I should check that out."

Everything else you can put into priority 2; that gets a regular notifications badge.

Do you have different priorities? Then set your priorities in the settings however you want using drag & drop!

That's strange. I've tested it here with an account that has tribes and one without. The tabs usually don't appear if no tribe is defined, but then the normal timeline without the tribe tabs should show up. Can you try creating a tribe just for testing and then head to the timeline? Go under Lists -> Tribes, then create a folder and add a user to it.

Emergency update!

#NoorNote or #NoorSigner on macOS doesn't store the nsec in the Keychain like some other Nostr clients do, but it does store the NWC string there. That totally slipped by me because of my blind spot. I've got everything iCloud related disabled on my Mac, but I completely overlooked that most Mac users aren't even aware if their Keychain is syncing to iCloud. And it's a well known fact that Apple has access to those so called 'encrypted' iCloud data. Shame on me.

So now you can migrate your NWC storage from the Keychain to a local encrypted file (which is also a cool advantage of a desktop client). Just go to 'Settings', then 'Zaps', and flip the switch. That's it.

Finally got around to installing noornote on my linux mint machine. I downloaded this package since I think it matches my architecture:

I installed it and went to run it in /usr/bin/, and I get this error:

./noornote: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.39' not found (required by ./noornote)

Is that a package I'm supposed to install? Duck AI is telling me that I should absolutely not upgrade glibc

With the help of AI, I ran these commands to get more info:

$ ldd --version | head -n1

$ dpkg -s libc6 | grep Version

I had to squeeze in a quick update because some things were bugging me too much.

1. That never-ending issue with the video player.

First off, native HTML. No full screen in Tauri or Safari, so I switched to a pro player. But that one doesn't show thumbnail images at all, or it shows them at first and then they vanish a few seconds later.

Now, back to native HTML (which does show thumbnail images) plus a custom fullscreen button. Looks and feels solid now.

2. Bug in Tribes: The sync between browser and local file was causing tribes to duplicate. Fixed.

3. First pull request! From npub17jj948ae23uy3q7z2rwau9f2y5xsnc62g49xncyj2gfy0tndx7nsl25kx3. He figured out you can use NoorNote in the browser too. You can actually pull it up at the local host on port three thousand while it's running. But, it wasn't built with that in mind. The desktop app still gets top priority. Now, in the browser, NS doesn't work, but regular browser extensions do. Yousif added that, so you can log in through the browser now. Everything else in browser mode is still untested for now.

4. Hashtags

They've been seriously overlooked before, but now they're clickable. And it kicks off a search for other notes with the same hashtag. Plus, it lets you subscribe to that hashtag so you get notified when new notes pop up with it. And you can manage your subscribed hashtags in the settings, unsubscribe, or add new ones. I could see expanding this in the future to regular search terms too (without the # sign in front).

Coming up next: NoorNote Tribes

After I have already introduced the feature rich follow and bookmark lists in #NoorNote, the next release will include a new feature based on NIP 51 lists: Tribes. These are essentially loose sets of various users that you can group into specific groups (Tribes). It does not matter whether you already follow them or not.

The definition of Tribes happens similarly to bookmarks in Folders (categories).

For this, you can define a Tribe Folder (=category name) with Tribes and combine different users in a comma separated list with Members and assign them to a specific Tribe. You can also just enter npubs.

When you click on the Tribe Folder, you then see your Tribe Members as user cards.

And of course, the synchronization from and to the local file and from and to the relays works just like with the bookmarks.

As usual, you can set in the settings whether you want to handle the synchronization manually or let NoorNote take over the work for you.

WHAT IS THIS GOOD FOR?

Well, I can imagine many use cases for Tribes in the future. The first and simplest case would be a timeline consisting only of the posts from the people in a Tribe. That is already implemented, but not yet obviously accessible, because this feature is still in alpha state and I want to observe it over a longer period. And here comes another feature that you do not know about yet: You can also access certain URLs via the search function.

For this, click on Search or fire CMD+K on Mac and enter '/tribes' in the search bar.

At the top in the tab bar, you see your defined Tribes and below that the timeline consisting of posts from the members of this Tribe.

As mentioned, Tribes are coming in the next release so you can already experiment with them.

Here's how to do it.

1. Open the picture in full view.

2. Click the share icon.

3. The note editor will open with the image and a link to the original poster.

4. Add your own text if you want, preview it, and then post it.

#NoorNote doesn't just imitate other clients, it's got new features too. Like extended profiles facilitating NIP-51 bookmark lists (width categories), and kind 30078 events for storing client specific data under NIP-78.

To pull that off, you head over to your bookmarks and create whatever categories you want, and NoorNote maps them to folders. You can use your normal bookmarks or you can make custom bookmarks just like in web browsers, with a URL and description. Or if you've already got some, you drag and drop them into different folders to sort and categorize everything.

You can tweak the order of bookmarks inside a folder too, just by dragging them around.

And if you want to share a few with other people, you just tick the "Profile" checkbox on that folder, and your list gets mounted to your profile page.

Basically, you can put anything you like onto your profile: your portfolio, a playlist, your top notes that you don't want buried in the timeline, a shopping wish list, you name it.

Right now, only NoorNote handles this, but it's all built on existing NIPs, so any other client could support it too if they wanted.

Another unique feature of #NoorNote is the follow list. Or lists in general. I love Nostr lists; they have so much potential. That's why I'm giving them special treatment.

FULL SYNC CONTROL

First off, you can control exactly how and where all your lists get synced. Since NoorNote is a desktop app, you can easily save lists locally as a backup, among other things. If you click "Save to File" in any list view, they end up in something like ~/.noornote/<your_npub>/follows-public.json. You can copy them from there to somewhere else and restore them safely if needed. Just copy your backup file back to ~/.noornote/<your_npub>/ and click "Restore from File." And all your follows are back! No external tools required for recovery.

Normally, when you start the app, you just see the "Save to File" button. But if you switch from "Easy Mode" to "Manual Mode" in the list settings, you can take granular control over your list management.

There are three places where your lists get stored:

1. In the browser (localStorage)

2. On the hard drive (under ~/.noornote/<your_npub>/)

3. And of course, on the relays.

So in "Manual Mode," you can decide when the list you have in your browser gets synced to the local file or to the relays, or restored from either. It doesn't get much more secure than that for handling your lists.

But if you don't feel like dealing with all that fiddling, just leave it in "Easy Mode" and NoorNote handles the syncing for you. You can still save your lists locally in "Easy Mode" anytime.

RICH FOLLOW LIST

I said Nostr lists have potential. Every list in NoorNote shows an example of what you can do with them. Let's take the follows list. It shows who you're following, or in NoorNote terms, who you're connected with. But it can do a lot more.

For example, it also shows if the user follows you back ("Mutual") or what your mutual zap ratio is. But that's not all. You can check from time to time if anything's changed in that mutual relationship. Just click "Check for changes."

Got a new mutual? Did someone stop following you back? A few seconds after clicking "Check for changes," new and former mutuals show up in a modal. And they get synced to your notifications too. So you can close the modal no problem. "Mark as seen" creates a new snapshot, so the same list won't show up next time, and you'll only get the new changes since your last check.

In your notifications, you can now click on any user and land right on their profile.

But that's not all.

When you open your follow list, you see it sorted by the time you followed them. But not all at once, since that can take a while to load depending on the number. At the end of the displayed list, more get loaded (with infinite scroll). But that can take time too until you see them all. If you want to see everything right away, click "Load all."

A loading bar appears...

And once they're all loaded, even more features become active.

For example, you can now sort by zaps too (a little borrow from ZapStar https://mslmdvlpmnt.com/zapstar/)

Or you can search directly for a user if you remember part of their name.

Or have it show only the non-mutuals.

And that's just the beginning.

You can spot them because there's a pink, clickable line above that says "[user name] quoted this note." Click on it, and you'll jump straight to the quoted repost.

If that's not enough for you, you can dive into detailed note analytics. It's in the same line where the zaps and likes and all that are, on the right.

You see who replied, with a direct link to their reply.

You see who zapped, with a link to their profile.

You see who reposted, who did a quoted repost, and who liked with which emoji. Basically everything.

I compared a few key signers, did a little side-by-side on them. What really surprised me is that some browser add-ons just store the user's nsec in plain text right in the browser's local storage, where it could be read by other add-ons!

No such problems with #NoorSigner, since it runs locally in the file system and talks to the #NoorNote client over Unix socket IPC. That said, it came out that NoorSigner was using the weaker XOR encryption instead of the more secure AES. And I fixed that up today, it'll be in the next release, insh'Allah.

Just dropped a new release of NoorNote (v0.2.14). It's got a bunch of bug fixes and stability improvements. Some of the highlights:

- Way more reliable multi-account switching
- Bookmark lists now sync the folder structure too
- Minor bug fixes for the NWC string and crash logs

Plus, a little note for Mac users:

Since I'm not a licensed MacOS developer, your Mac might whine about the app being "damaged," but that's not actually the case. Once you've copied the app into your Applications folder, just fire up Terminal and run

And honestly, most of those articles aren't really your thing. So you're basically left choosing between getting slammed with all of them or just shutting off article notifications entirely.

But if a handful of your favorite authors drop a long-form article, you want to hear about it. That's when you want a notifocation. #NoorNote can do that.

Just open up the note menu for that person (you know, the one with the three dots) and click 'Notify on new articles'. Next time they publish a long-form article, you'll get a notification.

He proposes 6 ways we can sell with ethics and spirituality:

🟣 Don’t praise your product more than it deserves.

This would be misrepresentation and deception. Be honest - although there is no harm in being charming, warm and friendly, that’s part of being good at business.

🟣 Do not conceal any defects in your products

If you have issues with your product, state them and let your customer know that you are working on fixing it.

“Whenever he displays the best side of the cloth or shows it in a dimly lighted place so that it will appear better (than it is), or displays the better of a pair of shoes or stockings, he is a tyrant and a scoundrel.”

🟣 Do not provide less than what you’ve been paid for

We would do well to apply the phrase “underpromise and overdeliver,” in our businesses.

“It was the custom of the forefathers that when they received, they would accept half a grain less and when they gave, they would give half a grain more.

They would say: “The half-grain is a veil between us and hell,” for they feared they could not measure accurately. And they would say: “The person is a fool who would sell Paradise, with a breadth many times greater than the seven heavens and earth, for half a grain!”

🟣 Taking advantage of people’s lack of knowledge of the market

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prohibited intercepting caravans before they reach the market.

This practice involves a buyer going out to meet a caravan that is bringing goods to the market, and buying those goods at a lower price by concealing the actual market rates in the city. This is deceptive because the seller in the caravan is unaware of the true value of their goods in the city's market.

🟣 Cancel a transaction if one has second thoughts after buying it

Imam al Ghazali says this isn’t obligatory, but it’s a highly ethical thing to do. In today’s terms, this could be creating adequate time for a refund period. The point here is that if someone feels dissatisfied or uncomfortable with their decision, you should not look the other way.

🟣 Selling to the poor on credit

In other words, if someone can’t afford something, give them time to pay. Don’t demand the payment, especially if they are not well-to-do and with little means.

If the debtor dies, forgive the debt.

Imam al Ghazali said that virtuous entrepreneurs don’t even keep a log of transactions where the poor owe them money, and getting payment from them should be considered a bonus.

We're not on the right track. We don't follow our agenda given by Allah ﷻ to us.

We are content to raise our voices instead of doing the right thing. Which gets us off track.

- Inward development: Gain more taqwa..
- Unify with other Muslims on the agenda
- Calling to good as a unified ummah and with the power to do so.

About the inward development:

Observe taqwa and come to Islam completely. Meaning applying the book of Allah in our personal lifes.

And a huge chunk of the Qur'an is about financial regulations (mahr, child support, zakat, giving loans back, staying away from riba etc.). So the first easy litmus test is to check our money matters.

We need to observe taqwa in our financial dealings.

When we don't abide by Allah's laws we will be humiliated, powerless and receive the rage from Allah.

So we need to start at step 1 at least. To get our financial dealings right. Bitcoin can play a fundamental role here. Not just saving wealth in Bitcoin but also using it as a currency (medium of exchange, MoE) in daily life. And keeping as little fiat money as possible.

We must try everything to not get involved in riba and the modern banking system. No riba loans, not using fiat currencies, not leaving money on our checking accounts and thus enabling and supporting this system.

The second step would be observing the hudud of Allah in family life.

So are we living taqwa in our financial matters and in our family matters?

. For those who don't know what this is: it's like the blue check for 𝕏, except you don't need to pay nor disclose your phone or credit card number for it.

For the techies: This is simply done with the 'Nostr Verify' #WordPress plugin (https://de.wordpress.org/plugins/nostr-verify/).

After installing, it adds 2 additional fields on the user profile page as shown in the screenshot.

You can choose any name and add the user's nostr public key (npub) in hex format. Use a tool like https://damus.io/key/ to convert npub to hex format.

After saving, it generates a JSON response file for nostr clients like this: https://islamic-marketplace.com/.well-known/nostr.json?name=im

According to this example the nostr nip05 address, which you can enter into any nostr client, is: im@islamic-marketplace.com.
