If you are measuring the ability to do a job, then yes! Gender-neutral standards are awesome! If, however, you&#39;re trying to measure their fitness, well, fitness is a thing that&#39;s relative to both gender *and* age. <br/><br/>I&#39;ll note that several years back when the Army overhauled its fitness standards, Congress threw a fit over the attempts to make them gender/age neutral because there was a lot of perception that they were discriminating against those of us with systems based on estrogen (the data backed this up, regardless of what the intent was). So, the current Army fitness standard is the compromise. <br/><br/>Then there&#39;s wanting to see skinny service members. Before getting too deep into this, I want you to take a look at GEN Milley, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. That man is not skinny. I would also absolutely not want to fight him. <br/><br/>And that&#39;s the thing: while they&#39;re not completely mutually exclusive, strong and skinny tend to be on opposite ends of a scale. Skinny troops may look good in uniform and be able to run far, but when it comes to wearing dozens of pounds of body armor while carrying around a weapon with lots more pounds of ammunition, plus all your gear (batteries for radios are *heavy*)... you gotta be strong. And most people who have that strength bulk up. Again, the services have been adjusting their body composition standards to account for this fact (and the fact that older methods of body composition analysis kinda sucked). If you want people who can do the tasks needed in combat, they have to carry around the muscle to do them. <br/><br/>Which really brings me to the bottom line: this complete misunderstanding of what it takes for military forces to fight in armed combat show not just the general ineptitude of the current administration, but the fact that they don&#39;t actually want a powerful military. They want the trappings of authoritarian rule. They want pretty toy soldiers on parade.
