A couple years ago I had a vision of a porcelain mug but it was far beyond my skills at the time. At the beginning of this summer I finally felt like it was within my grasp so I started learning the necessary skills. Slipcasting was the most complex but two months in I feel like I'm good enough at that to move to the next phase. Here are a couple of slipcast mugs I finished yesterday as proof of concept. The decoration isn't what I ultimately want, but it's beautiful in itself and I thought I'd share.

A good guide to Celsius for people who don't have a feel for it but don't want a formula.

If you do want a formula here's a reasonably easy way to convert in your head:

F=1.8C+32

To multiply by 1.8:

1) first multiply C by 2, which is easy mental math.

2) Then move the decimal one space to the left to get 0.2C.

3) then subtract 0.2C from 2C to get 1.8C. Round liberally to whole numbers at this step. It makes subtraction easier and will only mess up your answer by at most a little bit.

4) finally, add 32.

For instance if C=43 then:

2C is 86

So 0.2C is 8.6

So 1.8C is ≈ 86-9 = 77

And add 32 to get 109° farenheit. The actual value is 109.4° F.

This morning we have a lot of libs on here supporting mandatory voting in the US -- "We are very smart and rational and Harris would have won if more people voted so we have to make them!" Have they even considered how laws are enforced and who they're enforced against?

A government of, by, and for the people where cops extort, hurt, and kill those very same people for not voting -- what a great idea! But of course the same goes for all their laws, so I guess yet again I'm upset that liberals aren't anarchists. Sigh.

I was smoking some lovely hash last week and I realized I could use a few more pipes. I looked on eBay, but then I realized that I had everything on hand to make one myself. I've made a lot of things out of clay but for some reason it never occurred to me too make a pipe. This came out of the kiln this morning and I plan to test it out thoroughly later today, around 4:20 I imagine!

It's porcelain painted with a cobalt oxide wash. I don't use much glaze in the studio -- mostly oxides and Mason stains either as washes or blended into the clay body. I just love porcelain and in this case it let me make the stem very thin.

Like John Carlos Baez (npub1nf4…nqe4) says, the other four are convenient for some problems in that they make the calculations somewhat more efficient. This is one common role of abstraction in math. We find ourselves repeating a process e.g. with sin and cos often and realize that defining e.g. tan and sec can make the process more streamlined and/or reveal similarities between it and other processes that weren't so apparent pre-abstraction.

For instance, using trig substitutions to rationalize \sqrt{a-bx^2} with x=sin u seems different to rationalizing \sqrt{ax^2+b}, but once you introduce tan and sec and derive the version of the pythagorean theorem in those terms it's easier to see the parallelism in the method.

Also, taking things to extremes, a new paper on the arxiv shows that all elementary functions can be expressed in terms of the constant 1 and the binary operator eml(x,y)=e^x-ln(y), so we could actually do away with all trig functions and pretty much everything else too!

I don't know if I'm the last person to know this but I just learned about Soulseek, which is music sharing software that's different from torrenting. It works so well and the selection is beyond belief! I found two albums that I've had on vinyl forever but could never find digital versions.

I started with a Linux flatpack, which hung my computer a couple times -- this *never* happens on Linux -- but then found out about Licorice, which is a client with a Debian repository and it's working great! I just finished Riot Women and it was just about perfect! Five menopausal women form a punk band and write angry songs about their lives. Sally Wainwright's scripts are tragic and hilarious, the acting is excellent. There's nothing about this show I didn't love. And it passes the Bechdel test with flying colors.

One big problem with TV shows (and probably movies, but I don't watch many) about fictional musicians that rely on original music is that the music sucks. I liked Nashville a lot as a soap opera but it's musically blah with one or two exceptions and they're mostly that way. This show is an exception. The songs probably aren't going to make the hit parade IRL but they're totally listenable.

The first time I drove a stick was the first time I drove. I was 15, parents out of town so I threw a party. One kid got too drunk to drive home and I at least thought I wasn't so another kid drove the first kid home in her car and I followed them in the driver's manual vw beetle. I stalled it about a million times but finally was able to drive the couple of miles jerking around but not stalling and then the driving kid expertly drove the beetle back to my house.

Later in life I had a 1976 three on the tree Dodge dart and drove it for many years. Since then I've had automatics because it's better to have cars that all drivers can drive and also I'm pretty lazy

But later still my girlfriend's father gave her a manual miata for her 40th birthday and I taught her how to work the stick. So... Yes!

I think this is a much harder problem than that. It's necessary to account for the fact that for the situation to stay stable all three birthdays must be after February. No matter whether we have a leap year or not there are 306 days after February.

So each person has 306 ways to be born after February. The problem is that the denominator changes in a leap year and I'm not sure how to account for that, so let p be the probability that all three are born after February.

Next we want all three to be born on the same day of the week. It's easier to do this by calculating the chance that all three are born on different days. This is (7/7)(6/7)(5/7)≈0.612. So the probability that all three are born on same day of week is ≈1-0.612=0.388.

This means the probability for the whole thing is ≈p×0.388. But what's p? I have no idea. You'd probably get a pretty decent approximation by just forgetting about leap days if that's good enough.

Disclaimer: discrete probability problems are hard and I only thought about this superficially so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm totally wrong.

I haven't read the book yet but it's on my list. My default position is that William Gillis is wrong until proven otherwise, though, and I see nothing in this article to change my mind. He traffics in abstract ideas snapped into place like semantic puzzle pieces. Does the resulting picture reflect the actual world? He never gets to that question. He assumes that if his statements make sense then they must be true, which is the fallacy underlying the idea that everything can be understood through definitions rather than through an ongoing struggle to understand what's actually happening in the messy untheorizable world.

BTW are you familiar with the lost jukebox project? Jeffrey Glenn spent years collecting obscure singles of pop, garage, psychedelic,b etc, from the mid twentieth century and digitizing them. I'm very happy with the Oster classic series heritage model. It has a glass jar, which is the only kind that ever feels clean to me. The blending assembly comes apart for easy and thorough cleaning, and replacement parts are readily available -- the jar itself, the gasket, and the blade unit. Also, it only has one switch.

The other day I had a fairly popular post talking about how mathematicians easily and often admit that they don't know things or don't understand things. Today at work a real-life example came up!

I was helping a student with Calc I in my office. The question gave a function and asked for values of x where the tangent line was horizontal. The function is the first in the image.

This requires taking the derivative with the product rule. The result of this is the second in the image. Since the second term has a denominator (other than 1 of course) we need to combine the two terms so we can set the numerator to 0 and solve.

The result of this operation is the third in the image. Fractions are 0 when their denominators are 0, so the fourth line shows the equation to be solved.

The student got this far without any help but was unable to solve the equation. This is commonplace. After all, the hardest part of calculus is algebra. But I couldn't see how to solve it either, so I told the student this.

At this moment two of my colleagues were talking in the hall outside my office so I told the student I'd ask them about it. Neither knew how to solve it and told me as much. So I told the student, who was actually thrilled that none of use could solve it either.

So I asked Wolfram Alpha, which gave a solution using the Lambert W, aka the productlog function. I'm a combinatorial topologist -- I do graph theory of various kinds. I've heard of this function but otherwise know nothing at all about it. And I'm happy to admit it! Anyway, that's how mathematicians roll.

It goes back at least to this 1958 paper by Abba Lerner. I also found a 1960 paper by Paul Samuelson which attributes the phrase to Lerner, so it's possible he made it up.

Lerner's paper is called "Inflationary Depression and the Regulation of
Administered Prices" and is reprinted in the 1967 book linked to below.
