There’s been a lot of miscommunication about lab tests & false positives, but the key thing to understand is that while a positive test can help, the absence of a positive test doesn’t erase all the epidemiological evidence. In fact, cyclospora is hard to test for as it’s hard to grow in a lab, it has a long incubation period, and contaminated produce perishes quickly & contains a tiny number of parasites. So usually these food outbreak investigations rely on other evidence to find a source.

Important context for the diarrhea outbreak is that usually most Cyclospora outbreaks do not get traced back to a specific source. They are difficult to trace due to long incubation period, short shelf life of produce, it's hard to grow the parasite in the lab, and its genome is hard to sequence.
