Part of me wants to take alt text for granted but I'm too old for that. Most of me still marvels at all the lovely folk who write descriptions of macro photos, insects, adorable cats, landscapes, birds, galaxies, and on and on. As a Blind person this truly is access like we've never had before, and that I never imagined. Thanks beautiful people, you're part of the resistance.

For the first time in my life on Masto, I read alt text that made me wish the person hadn’t bothered. After a wordy post, they wrote in the alt text field something like, “I don’t really want to write alt text and train the AI for free, but okay, person holding a computer.” I’m going to assume they didn’t think about what a slap in the face this was to me, and possibly to anyone else who relies on alt text. 3 Times I started an acerbic reply and deleted it, but I’m still seething, so I’m asking anyone who is so disingenuous to just not bother; you’ll create less hard feelings that way.

Do you have a kitchen item with multiple levels of value? Mine is our ice-cream scoop. It's one of the few things I took from my mother's place after she died. It was the ice-cream scoop from my childhood. It's solid mettle, fits well into the hand, can be warmed easily under hot water for an efficient scooping experience, it's pretty compact, and it'll probably survive for centuries. I should will it to someone.

I wish every Blind person could own these. They are two globes. The one on the right is a relief globe, with the land masses outlined with fabric paint to make them textured. The globe on the right is an Intelo-globe. The stylus allows you to choose a mode, geography, geology etc. then run the stylus over the globe and hear information spoken. They were game-changers for me, and I still like to explore them. Not entirely tangentially, I was startled to discover how close Greenland is to Canadian territory like Elsmere Island.

Sometimes I favourite posts with photos that have excellent alt text, and are probably also great photos. I always wonder whether the favourite would count as 3 favourites to the poster if they knew I was blind. Liking photos in any form is a very new hobby for us, a child of Mastodon as far as I'm concerned. It's restful for me to read alt text about nature or ice formations or an interesting animal or a cute cat, so I'm grateful.
